What would you go to for a lightweight portable laptop in the sub 1k range. Here's what it has to do:

Battery for 3 hours
Not weigh down my backpack on campus
sub 15" screen is preferable, but 15" is ok
handle office 2007
do some mild RPG gaming
No macs :D

laptops are bad for gaming, unless you like listening to the fans all the time. :D

I do enjoy the fans. In fact, my old gateway is humming merrily on my lap right now.

and the only game it'll see is a little bit of Guild Wars which will run on a Pentium III

A dell XPS M series such as the M1530 would be a very good choice.

If lightweight is key, check out the Fujitsu Lifebooks, and Toshiba Satellites both tend to offer full featured laptops that weigh in quite a bit lighter than their IBM, HP and Dell counterparts. Most of the laptop makers offer ultra-portables, but usually you pay a premium and sacrifice performance (Hard Drive speed, Max Ram, etc) and cooling capability.

Geeks.com has some smoking deals right now.

Also check with Kevin and see what he can get.

Seem to be a bit out of my price range. And it's not that I don't "want" a mac, I just don't want to have to re-learn computing. I'm very comfortable on my PC's

You can install windows on the Mac. :D That would kinda be counter-productive through. But Mac OS is so easy to learn and master, you'll be wishing you switched earlier.

The Acer One Aspire comes with a 1.6GHZ Intel Atom Dual Core CPU, 160GB Hard Drive, 3 USB ports, Wifi, Webcam, XP, 1GB RAM, 2 media reader ports, external VGA, battery life is about two hours. I bought one a few weeks ago after trying out two that cusatomers bought. Lighter than anything.

I just got one of those. I am about to upgrade it up to Win 7. 160gb hard drive, 1.6ghz Atom. It's really not bad. Installed Office 2000 and Photoshop CS3 on it. I use my cell phone for internet for it, as well.

Haven't tried any games yet.....
