The fastest 4 wheel classes in off road racing are Trophy Truck and Class 1, and they are usually 2 wheel drive. The only rules are you need a naturally asprated engine, and saftey rules, thats pretty much it. There are a few 4 wheel drives, which definitely have some advantages, but are usually way too expensive. The last time a 4 wheel drive vehicle won the overall in the Baja 1000 was an Early Bronco in (I think) 1969. Its all about wheel travel and big shocks and momentum :woot:
Hummers are not the only "go fast" off road vehicles that people build, and nobody would make them 2wd. Most people start with Ford Rangers, F150, or Toyota Pickups. If you check out companies like Camburg or Total Chaos, they build some sweet bolt on kits for certain trucks. In southern California, prerunners are like Jeeps up here.

Well if they make a kit for a hard body mazda 4 cylinder let me know, cause I can pick one up free (2wd ralley time!!!!)
Like up where I was last weekend in school bus canyon, we got to 60 in our jeeps so I can only imagine a bonified baja truck

Mazda hardbody? Is that the one that has the same engine and chassis as a Ranger? They make a lot of Ranger stuff. They are like the TJ of prerunners :D

Desert racing is for nerds with fab shops that can't seem to put a simple Early Bronco rockcrawler together even though they have all the parts on hand. :D

I was thinking the mazda was more like a nissan, but ford ranger is possible... its a 1987-1993 Mazda B2200 short reg cab with a 2.2L I4 8 valve SOHC

Hell,we need to build some cheap 2wd pre-runners.Now that would be fun if I could keep from shredding tires like my baja bug used to.

I got a free b2200 with low compression (im not sure on all or just one of the cylinders) that needs a radiator. I'm down to weld that son ***** up, chop the fenders, throw some 37's on and race that baby off some sand dunes or what not. Can you say booney crashing :)
