Thinking about buying a quad. Will use it as a trail toy. Is there a significant advantage to spending the extra money on a 4x4?
Seems like a lightweight 2x4 with decent tires should do just fine, and they're alot cheaper

2x4 quads suck.. go for a 4x4 you will really be happy you did in the long run.
i work on a ranch and we use quads to run around... the quad i use the most is a 2001 honda rancher 4x4.. great quads.. they take everything we throw at them and more(water up to the top of the gas tank... mud to the top of the tires....18" ledges)
we aslo have one honda 200 type two that is 2wd and its great for dirt roads or other some small stuff.. but it does not compare at all to a 4x4 quad. we are constantly pulling it out of mud.

hondas are tuff... and don't even think of getting a 2x4 unless your getting a sport bike. the first time you get stuck and can't lift the heavy tird out you will be really mad

Depends on where you are going to ride it, 4x4 quads don't do so well at Sand Mtn.

thats not entirely true if you air down the tires...we went everywhere in my bros polaris ranger with the tires aired down and that tird is about as heavy as the 4wd units go...kinda nice though you can bring ur ice chest when blm isn't out

yummmm sport quads. I need at least one go fast vehicle, and sport quad won out. I'm looking to pick one up, although since summer is almost over I might wait until next spring.

the answer to ur Q depends on what u iontend to mostly do--- rocky sluices, forest roads and peavine trails, or do you want to cruise all over the dunes? a 4x4 quad will work in deep sand, but is not ideal and for best results u need a 2wd. For trail riding, gotta have the 4x4...

Except for the bronco canyon area, and mud and snow, I think a sport quad would be fun. Did I mention I'm pushing the sport quads cause I need someone to go to sand mtn with? ;)

I ride around those areas all the time all the way to stampede on 4x4 . No Bronco. I use 2wd alot but it is nice to have 4x4 to fall back on in mud and snow. I like my AC but the new hondas with power assit would be my next buy. Don't go overkill on CC, I have ridden honda 500 that goes anywhere and you get better gas mi.. I bought 650 because its 2up and wanted more than enough power to haul 2.

If you can fix it yourself, get a used one. Got a 650 prairie, been all over sand mt with the tires aired down. Over some rocky stuff that nearly rolled it out by twister somewhere. Fast enough too. Didn't have to finance cause it was used. Did have to fix swingarm bearings. Like everyone says, depends on your usage, but I would reccomend 400cc or more, and 4x4 for things like peavine bronco etc. Also just bought a brand new 400 suzuki eiger for the wife. last year's model. 4x4. warranty. $5k. Still does like 60mph. So they don't necessarily have to be that expensive.

It all depends on what you want the quad for. Personally, I do a lot of desert trail riding on my '06 KFX700 sport quad. It is a great bike for that purpose. No, I wont be taking it on the Rubicon, but for 99% of Nevada desert 2x4 is all you need. I have never needed 4x4 and have even taken my wifes 2x4 330 Polaris Trailboss on some pretty serious rides. If you like mud, you may want to consider 4x4, but I try and stay away from muck.
My KFX is in the for sale section of this site, ONLY because I'm old and really could use a utility quad for leisurely rides with the wife. The KFX is too tempting to stay on the gas, and at my age, the bones break easily. :gapteeth:
Its not the fastest thing out there, but can scare the hell out of you, has an even powerband, shaft drive and will keep you entertained, guaranteed and has that killer V-twin sound to boot. :smokin:

Rocks or mud is the only reason I would need 4 wheel drive, and I try and stay away from both. I've climbed all over the Stillwater Mountains outside Fallon with no trouble. As stated by many, it all depends on what he wants to do with his quad.

Kairo,
I see this an older post but maybe you're still check things out....
I've read everyone else's reply, and they all have good points, so I can only commment on my experience....
I have, and still ride, a 1985 Kawasaki KLF185A (Bayou), that is, a 2wd, 185cc, quad, with NO rear suspension ( twin A arms in the front). I have put close to 3500 miles of good riding on that machine, in every type of Nevada riding there is. The only exception might be, thick, gumbo style mud (gumbo mud, not that stuff we get on the blackrock when it rains, I mean the deep Mississippi type stuff... not much of that in NV). I run about 2.5 psi in the rears for at least some buffering. I've ridden with guys that have everything frm 400EX's, to Warrior's, to Grizzley's. I've never been pulled out, and I've never had to ride around. Slower than them? Yes. Had to work the bike more? Absolutely. Had to depend on riding style instead of machine power? You bet. Had to work the bike harder? Yep. Have I had to get off and horse it around? Sure. But who hasn't on any bike?
But it has been a great little trail bike. It always starts. It's easy to work on. Parts are cheap, and readily available. And it's light. About 300 pounds. It gets great gas milage. And it fits in any truck or trailer. The down side? It's old and slower and rides rougher.
Now here's the deal. I recently picked up a 1997 Suzuki lt-4fwd 250, 250cc, 4wd. Full independant suspension, 2wd, 4wd, 4hi, 4lo, and super-low with front diff lock. So far this bike has been sweet. Goes anywhere I ask it to, and don't think twice. You know what the funny thing is? Every place I've taken this bike, my old 185 would have gone without issue. Maybe not quite as fast, or as smooth, but I could have made it there. So I would say it really comes down to how hard you're willing to work the bike, yourself, and the trail. My wife and I are now looking at picking up another quad, this one brand new. Most likely a Kawasaki Bayou 250. Why? They're cheap (new under 3K$), they're proven and they're small. I can get two bayou's in the back of my short bed truck (one standing up), but most importantly, it fits the way WE ride. And that's what's going to decide what you get. Unless you ride ride extreme trails with DEEP water and mud, or are going to put the bike in a position (regularly) that will require 4wd, save the extra cash and get a 2wd, then spend what you saved on some rack bags, riding gear, a winch and other goodies. Again, I'm not dogging on other people's recommendations, but as long as you're happy with the bike and it gets you where you want to go, I think 4wd is something most people can do without.
Good luck!
