Looking to buy a new AR-15. Can't decide on what to get. Looked at Colt, Bushmaster and Smith&Wesson, also Rock River but still can't decide. Any ideas and input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

averse to building one yourself?
I built mine out of a double star lower and an upper from J.T dist. Misc parts from other places. Considerably cheaper than buying a bushmaster or colt.

X2 on building it yourself. You get it at the right price $6-700 with mags (no complete weapon tax either) , and at no additional cost the knowledge to build it/disassemble it for servicing.
Here is mine that I built out of a double star stripped lower, with a M4 Flat top complete kit from akpartskits. With a carrying handle.

Super fun and has that "wow" factor.

I still have a Gunsmoke ent. lower I bought at the last gun show, put it on a Colt upper and it worked like sheeet. So thought I would try just buying one with one brand and a warranty. Still looking at all options though!

The Govt charges tax on guns as a percentage. When you build you pay tax on a $100 reciever vs. a $800 complete rifle. That's why its cheaper to build.
If you dont want to build from a bare lower, you can get a complete lower for $250ish, and a complete upper for $400ish. Go to www.ar15.com and check out the equipment exchange. Lots of deals on new and used there. www.del-ton.com is a great place for complete uppers.
Why didn't the gunsmoke lower work? They have a good rep and are made by the same company that makes most of the other lowers. Some colt rifles use different diameter pins BTW.

i've had good luck with DPMS....say you get a DPMS lower with a GG&G dominator upper you'd have one bad ass setup... or run a dpms lower w/ an RRA upper or Del-ton upper..either way the dpms lowers are good..the uppers weren't too good a few years ago..but so far my newer one is working just fine without any hiccups..and it's a full DPMS kit rifle...

colts are nice..but super expensive....i mean you can build a rifle from places with much better quality than a colt, bushmaster, DPMS...for about the same price as a colt...
the one i've wanted to build lately is a GG&G dominator upper
about $780
http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=35&parents=38,39
with an LMT Defender 2000 Lower with a 2 stage trigger assembly and the government markings :D
something like this
http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=124
about $330 i think it's about 100 bucks more with the 2 stage trigger assembly installed..but you need an FFL for the lower.. :(
so say you're looking at about $1200 for a pretty decent rifle flat top with iron sights...
you can also add a plethora of optical devices...
like aimpoint comp ML3 about $450
http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=290
or an eotech 552 about $460
http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=284
or even go with other tactical scopes like leopolds...or even the millett TRS-1 which has been a suprisingly good find...i want one..but currently lack the funds but they go about $300
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/38974-54213-1544.html
so with optics...say 1500-2000 or so...
where as you buy a colt...for 1500 - 2000..without optics (unless you get lucky)..... i'd personally go for the one i build but i would also love to have a colt...just to say i have one :gapteeth:
www.ar15.com is a good place for info..but there are a bunch of fanboi's that will NOT bow to other manufactureres even when proven wrong..

i mean you can build a rifle from places with much better quality than a colt..
I dont agree with this statment above.
So what makes the colt cost so much more then the identical bushmaster? the name? parts used? anyone know
Here are the major differences between the two rifles:
Bushmaster uses the rifle front sight base instead of the F-marked front sight base. Practical difference: You may need a taller front sight post with the Bushmaster using some sights.
Bushmaster does not parkerize under the front sight base. Practical difference: You'll get a little rust there; but not much. The Bushmaster barrel pictured below was almost 10 years old when this picture was taken and it had been out in the rain and used quite a bit:
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/dasanii19/bush.jpg
Bushmaster does not magnetic particle test or proof test its bolts. Colt does. Practical difference: Not much. The Colt has higher quality control to prevent bolt breakage but it still happens with both models.
Bushmaster uses standard carbine handguards instead of double-shield M4 handguards. These circulate air around the barrel better; but also make the rifle hotter to hold and are narrower.
Bushmaster uses a standard rifle front sling. Colt uses a side-mounted front sling. Practical difference: The Bushmaster will roll using some tactical slings, the Colt won't.
Bushmaster uses standard AR15 feed ramps. Colt uses the extended M4 feed ramps. Practical difference - the Colt feeds hollowpoints, long OAL rounds better and is more reliable in high cyclic rate situations (full-auto, suppressor).
Bushmaster uses a 1/9 twist barrel. Colt uses a 1/7 twist barrel. Practical difference: The Colt will stabilize heavier, longer rounds better than the 1/9. With the Bushmaster, you may be limited to 69gr or less rounds (some Bushmaster barrels can handle up to 75gr, some cannot - kind of a crap shoot).
Bushmaster comes with a standard carbine buffer. Colt comes with an H-Buffer. Practical difference: Colt buffer is 1oz heavier which comes in handy with suppressors but otherwise does nothing beyond aiding reliability just a tiny bit.
Bushmaster comes with a blue extractor insert and normal AR15 extractor spring. Colt comes with a black extractor insert and heavy duty extractor spring. Practical difference: The Colt extracts more reliably; but the Bushmaster is easy enough to upgrade to the same standard for about $25.
With Colt, you are as close to Milspec as you can get.
Colt has much, much better quality control than Bushmaster ,Bushmaster commonly has issues such as improperly staked gas keys, gas keys too loose, over torqued barrels and various other minor issues; but they are very good about fixing their problems.
Finally, Colt has excellent customer service to their civilian customers..Dont believe
the BS you hear on the net about how they dont...
Those are the major differences off the top of my head. So now you just have to decide if they are worth the $300 difference in price.

F*** COLT!!! They threatened to sue me because I used to make a small charm for a watch chain that cowboy shooters would wear that had the Colt emblem engraved on it. I probably made 10 of them altogether over maybe 8 years. They threatened to put me out of business if I continued. It was signed by some retired Army general....moron...yeah that's it General Moron. And another thing...I engrave slides for a living and do a lot of 1911 slides along with Glocks and of all the 1911 slides I've done...and I've done them all... Colt has the ****tiest quality. They aren't even even the same size end to end. I have to shim a Colt slide in the machine to make it flat. Know who has the best??? Rock Island Armory! Yep!

In my opinion and has been proved time and time again, Colt has been and still is the best out there period, again "in my opinion". We can debate this all day long so il just leave it at "RIDE THE PONY AND DONT LOOK BACK"..
Yea Colt was probably pretty upset with you using their Copyright. Whether it was "honest" and you only made $10, its still theirs like it or not.
Im not pulling this Colt stuff out of my rear guys. I drank the koolaid, I sold myself on Colt. Do your research and see for yourself that Colt lives up to the hype. Please dont listen to the BS, its spiteful rumors started by jealous non Colt owners. The ratings speak for themselves. Nough said

First off "PAL" don't get your panties in a bunch. This is a discussion forum where we all can share our own opinions freely about firearms whether you like it or not, right or wrong... If you don't like it, why stick around?
2nd off. ..So what? You work on them ..Ok,... What does that mean?......Your a dime a dozen. You make it sound like your opinion is "more worthy" then the next guys, give me a break...
I've given legitimate FACTS about Colt, not only Colt but bushmaster as well. Giving true factual specifications between the two rifles. All you've contributed is. "I work on them" "Colt sucks" blah blah blah....
If Colt sucks so bad, it should be pretty easy for you to dig up some dirt on them to show all of us here what exactly sucks about the rifle, show some facts. Should be pretty easy for ya..
If you dont like Colt hey, no sweat off my GAHOANIES. See here, ill even give you some free advertisment. :D http://www.zipgraver.com/
(I want everyone to know that im not ruling out every rifle, im just passing on facts about all of them and specific facts about Colt. I do think other manufactures are just as reliable and durable as Colt. I just think Colt has the edge on all of them, look for your self and take it for what its worth to you)

ARs are nice and all, but if u want something a little different, consider the M96. I have the M96 Expeditionary rifle in .223 and it shoots circles around my Colt SP-1.
Factory ported bbl, accepts AR mags and has ZERO felt recoil. Plus it has a number of options including a Bren-style top loader. It's modeled after the Stoner 63 in appearance.

That chart gets tossed around anytime the Colt guys get bunched up. Fact is, for most of us recreational shooters, none of that means anything. It might be an issue if you were in the military and used your rifle everyday in harsh conditions.
For most of us, spending the extra money on a Colt is like putting a Dana 60 in a Jeep that stays on the street. Its cool to have, but provides little benefit.
Plenty of government agencies and law enforcement do just fine with Bushmaster, Armalite, Stag and others.
For anyone considering an AR rifle, I recommend buying a complete, built lower half for about $250 (Stag, Ameetec, etc), then a complete upper half for about $400 (www.del-ton.com is excellent for complete uppers). Assembly is a matter of pushing in two pins and inserting a magazine. I have two rifles built this way and both have been 100% reliable. You'll have less bragging rights than those with a Colt, but you can buy a lot of ammo with the money you save.

Well, I like to buy things that hold and increase in value, I like knowing that my rifle meets goverment standards, I like knowing my rifle is as close to milspec as possible. So spending the extra $300 is worth it to me. Ill say this again, I do think other manufactures are "close to" or" just as" reliable and durable as Colt. I just think Colt has the edge on all of them. By thte way, I just checkted the stock market, my Colt just went up another $100 in the time frame of writing this,so I guess it was worth the extra $300 after all  I should change my screen name to "The Heckler" :D:D:D

so whats the deal on 3 shot burst addons? can you get them with a special liesence or do you have to buy an old rifle?
In Nevada you can own a full auto, 3 shot burst is classified as full auto. HOWEVER, per federal law, NFA, civilians may only own ones made before the law was enacted (1986). So there is no way to get or build a new full auto legally. You have to go through a background check, pay a tax and it takes about 6 months to get a legally transferable one. They are also very expensive since they can't make any more, generally about 10 times the price of a semi auto.
