We hunt more for the love of the sport, We end up giving most of the meat to friends and family.

It's a great bonding experience for me and my son & his uncle.

Besides, the way the economy is headed, we may need this skill

I remember my first deer. I royally screwed up and not fully digested poop got all over my deer's body cavity. I was so bummed. Didn't make that mistake twice though. Hope your son gets a nice deer and please post pics of the hunt. I am tagless this year so I need to live through others. :(

I remember it well. And I drank some blood. Not very much but almost a mouth-full. It was gross and I gagged but didnt puke. I knew I had to with my first kill. Please get pics, this is year #3 with no tag...
Also, why a dust mask?

My fist was uneventfull, but my daughters first was nasty, she shot it late and we lost the blood trail, found him the next morning laying in the river. Wet, gut torn and 24 hours old. I didn't toss, but my buddy and my daughter did. I'll post pics later.

My first clean was an elk. Believe it or not, I have never shot a deer. Elk, antelope, and birds is all I've taken. Been deer hunting quite a few times, just never tagged one.

At any rate, I was 15 or so, we were on horses in Montana. It was colder than hell, and snowing sideways. Uneventful, as the blood just froze into the snow and everything stayed nice and clean :D

We hewed off a hunk of meat and ate it over the lunch fire right there.

i can relate to just about every post, we quarter everything up in the field, so when i made the cut down the back leg i was very suprised when it started oozeing out , and the smell was horrible, i was told that was the scent gland !

I wish I had the picture, but I looked like something out of a horror movie! I had blood head to toe! Gotta love those old timers in the club that said they got it worse "back in the day."

Think I was 16 at the time, over in the ruby mountains, wasn't really all that eventful, minimal blood, smell wasn't bad, the worst part was having to drag it out for a couple miles over hills

well i think i was 14 for my first kill. (1968) not much of a hunt, i lived on a 3000 acre ranch in northern Cal. and my cousen and I just went down the south end. shot me a "white dear" ($5000 fine) and hung it right there. my cuz and i lived in an old office/house from the old lumber mill and had the valt/cold storage set-up with a band saw and packaged it all up there. ahhh, the memories.
