I have been down for Thanksgiving before. I have friends from San Jose that go down there every year for Thanksgiving Chris, the weather is usually pretty mild. I can put you in touch with them if you want, they know the area really well.

We are going to be there Thanksgiving until the following Monday. Plan to tow the wranger down behind the truck and camper, and stay at furnace creek campground.

We'll probably do some of the trails in the park - they seem pretty well suited for a stock rig. Any recommendations or ones to stay away from?

Titus Canyon is my favorite. The Racetrack, Ubehebe Crater, and Lippincott Mine Trail are great also.

So if I can set the date who's interested in going? We would camp half way through Death Valley and maybe stay a night or two at one of the camp ground at Furnace creek. Maybe a 4-6 day trip??????? Input?????????

I'm definetly intrested and could proably convince my brother too, but Thanksgiving weekend is out. I work retail and he works at a casino so we have to work the holidays. The weekend before (either the 14th or 21st) could work out for us. 4 days of wheeling and camping would be good.

We were there last year and stayed at the Panamint Springs Hotel. Pretty nice. The campground across the street looked pretty good too. The loop from Panimint to Lipencot around the Race track then Tea kettle junction to Hunter Mountain and back to Panamint is a full day trip.

Yes it will still happen just trying to figure out when your leaving and were to camp and what to see.
We camped at Panamint Springs Resort this weekend. Not my favorite kind of camping but better than staying home. Hot showers were a bonus. There are a ton of trails in the Panamint Valley. We really want to get back down there with the FJ40 some time. If you pick Panamint bring gas, the station there was still at $4.35.

Since we were solo we just took a day trip up Wildrose Canyon to Mahogany Flats campground. There are three campgrounds in that area; Wilderose, Thorndike, and Mahogany flats. Mahogany Flats is at 8100' and has great views of the Bad Water area of Death Valley. It might be a bit cold at Thanksgiving. Thorndike is up in the Pinion pines, I didn't notice the elevation, it is a very sheltered camp. Wildrose is pretty low but very exposed, with windchill it might actually be colder than Thorndike.

On the North end of the valley is Tamerack Springs, we have camped there many times. Lots of stuff to explore in the area including the Race Track.

Where ever you go I would suggest you pick up a copy of Mitchel's Guide to Death Valley if you don't already own it.

So far we are thinking about heading into Death Valley Nov26 evening and staying till the 30th.
This could change to heading into Death Valley the 28th-30 due to problems with shared holiday with my wife son and her ex.

Do think we are going to do Major off road mostly exploring.Is RaceTrack and different tourist parts of the Valley.

camping fees are $15-18 per night but we can fit more then one rig in a camp spot.

Figure 300 miles down plus 300 back and 100-200 miles per day depending were we go for fuel and remember fuel is $$$ there to I would bring (2) 5 gallons can if you go.
There is a small store right there with food and a bar and place to eat . plus its $20 to get into the park for 7 days.

OK, so im talking to the wife about going down since we can still do thanksgiving with the family. What we are trying to figure out is how to go. Ideally we would like to take the dogs, but with me, her, the baby, and camping gear, its not possible.

she said it would be fine if we took the 4-runner, but that kinda defeats the purpose. Thinking about towing the jeep now. seems a little over kill?

It must be sold. I was second in line and never heard anything.

Yes, a trailer would solve half the problem. I could find a dog sitter and solve the other half.

Ill work on something. I really want to go.

how will you camp? tent? worried about the baby getting cold? I need input to help with Logan.:scratch:

Remember this is a National Park, camping is restricted to designated sites. IIRC the fine for camping in outside designated sites is fairly stiff. And there are a lot of rangers.
There is a privative camp just past the Race Track that is almost always empty. It is at the top of the Lipencott mine road, which is bonus.

Tamarack campground on the north end of the valley almost always has sites. It is close to Scotty's Castle, Ubhebe Crater, and the race Track.

Sunset campground, across from Furnace Creek, is the worst camp ground evar. May as well camp in the parking lot at Walmart. Stove pipe Wells is about the same.

BTW The cheapest gas is always at Stovepipe Wells. I found out last week from the manager of the Panamint Springs Gas station that they get subsidized.

Where is backcountry camping allowed?

* More than two miles away from any developed area, paved road, or "day use only" area.
* Camp only in previously disturbed areas and park your vehicle close to the roadway to minimize impact.

Where is backcountry camping NOT allowed?

Camping is NOT allowed on the valley floor from Ashford Mill in the south to 2 miles north of Stovepipe Wells.

Backcountry campsites must be more than 100 yards from any water source to protect these fragile areas for wildlife use.

Camping is NOT allowed on the following "day use only" dirt roads:

* Titus Canyon Road
* Mosaic Canyon Road
* West Side Road
* Wildrose Road
* Skidoo Road
* Aguereberry Point Road
* Cottonwood Canyon Road (first 8 miles only)
* Racetrack Road (from Teakettle Junction to Homestake Dry Camp)

Camping is NOT allowed at the following historic mining areas:

* Keane Wonder Mine
* Lost Burro Mine
* Ubehebe Lead Mine
* Camping should be avoided near all mining areas for personal safety.

If in doubt whether an area is open to camping please check at the nearest Ranger Station or the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.

Free voluntary permits for backcountry camping may be obtained at the visitor center or any ranger station. Solo hikers may want to provide additional information about plans and emergency contacts.

Overnight group size is limited to 15 people and no more than 6 vehicles. Larger groups will need to split up and camp at least 1 mile apart.

Campfires are prohibited, except in fire pits in developed campgrounds. Gathering wood is unlawful and burning of wood is not allowed in the backcountry. Campstoves and barbeque grills are allowed. Charcoal ashes must be packed out.

Valuable Backcountry Suggestions

Water
Since many springs may be dry or contaminated, plan to carry your own water or stash it ahead of time. During hot spring, summer and fall months, one gallon of water or more per person per day is needed. Heat and very low humidity create extreme dehydration potential during summer. We do not suggest low elevation hiking in Death Valley National Park between May and October.

Hazards
In winter, the higher elevations are cold enough that snow and ice conditions may require special safety equipment. Do not enter mine shafts, tunnels, or buildings. Watch for rattlesnakes, especially near old structures and vegetated areas near water. Do not camp in dry washes or drainages due to potential flash flood danger.

Backpacking
Death Valley National Park has few maintained trails and no established campsites in the wilderness. Since most hiking here is cross-country, it is important to hike on areas where your footsteps will have the least impact. Trampling of vegetation, fragile soil crusts, aquatic habitats and animal burrows should be avoided.

Maps
Detailed maps are necessary for many hikes in Death Valley National Park. Topographic maps are available online, at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center or by phone from the Death Valley Natural History Association (760) 786-2146.

Backcountry Ethics - Walking softly in the Desert

The desert is as fragile as any other natural area. Here are some tips that can help you be an ethical hiker and camper.

Learn about the region before you go
Talk to a ranger or read publications before your trip. When you familiarize yourself with a certain area, you will know what equipment you need for a safe trip and to leave the area as pristine as you found it.

Walk on durable surfaces
Since most hiking in Death Valley National Park is cross-country, it's important to hike on areas where your footsteps will have the least impact. Trampling of vegetation, fragile soil crusts, and animal burrows should be avoided. Walking in canyons with flowing water can have damaging effects on riparian habitats. Avoid walking in the water if possible. If there is an established trail, stay on it. Other low impact areas include desert pavement and dry, gravelly washes. When hiking in large groups cross-country, disperse into smaller groups of 3 or 4 and do not walk single file as this creates trails that can last for years.

Choose resistant campsites
Avoid areas with organic ground cover. Instead, choose areas on rock, sand or gravel. Cooking areas should be located away from sleeping areas. This "spreading out" will reduce impact in a concentrated area. Disperse large groups to reduce impacts.

Human waste disposal
To prevent pollution of water or spread of disease, you must dispose of solid waste properly. Dig a "cat-hole" with a small trowel 4-6 inches deep and at least 200 yards from any water source or campsite. After use, the cat-hole should be covered with soil and disguised with natural material.
The more popular backcountry use becomes, the more important backcountry ethics become.

Thanks thats good info. A couple of areas I thought were off limits are back on my list. The Josha forest on the S Saline Valley road comes to mind.

There is also a really nice spot on the S Saline Valley road just past the Hunter Mountain tun off that I'd like to camp at.

I need to start writing this down and plan were to camp on which night....we just stayed in Beatty last time..

So have you guys set a date? I got lost in all the dog pics and the rules and regs for where, when and how high they want you to jump to go see the place...

Unless things change due to custody dates on my wife's end with our son. We will be leaving early Friday Morning Nov 27th threw Sunday 29th or even Monday 30th.

It kind of depends on who is going??? If people are committed I would like to have a Pizza one night and figure out camping spot's and thing's and sight's to see..

My dog wouldn't eat it, but might sit on it since he's old and tends to plop down without looking where he's aiming..

I'd love to go, but we have plans with the In-Laws already..

Not to de-rail your thread but we are the same way, my wife lost her father,

her mother, & her brother in the same year. I have my parents, grandma, & one brother.

I dread the day I lose my dad..

every year in the beginning of november death valley has an event called the encampment. it is an awesome experience they have a resident explorer/ off roader named dave hefner who sets up a run every year on a newly found trail. i have been going to death valley in november every year since i was born, if you have any questions on trails or anything send me a pm if i cant answer my dad who has been wheelin there since the 70s can. i love that place i recommend butte canyon and echoe canyon easy trails but awesome scenery, the ranger station should have info on those runs. if you take butte canyon past geoligist cabin it turns into guller wash that will take you the cabin(ranch) that charles manson was captured at, the bus that is parked at barker ranch is not mansons. It is a very interesting run i recommend it to anyone with mildly modified 4x4 or a good driver in a stock 4x4

i forgot to mention that if you do the butte canyon or striped butte trail there are three cabins that are open to the public if you want to stay in them or camp out side of them they just ask that you pick up after your self. if you come the bad water side the settlement you pass is a talc mine that is not open for camping go about 5 more miles and you will hit geologist cabin that is up a hill on the right if you dont like that one there is another about 3 more miles down the road that is alittle more spacious. and the third is barker ranch where i prefer not to stay due to the history.
