So I am f'n newb when it comes to hunting yotes. I was wondering where is a good spot, and the best way to bag them? Do you spot light them or what?

Depends on the time of year. I am by no means an expert but in mating season you wanna call with coyote calls, not mating season use animal distress calls. I have yet to really find a place to hunt them that they haven't already been pressed pretty hard. Don't know the laws as far as spot lighting them either.

We've got plenty of them down on the Carson River, south of Silver Springs. I'm pretty sure the Rancher down here wouldn't mind you killing a couple yotes, just make sure they are yotes. There are quite a few dogs around here that are germans shepard mix and look like a yote, to include my dog.
I'd be really, really pissed if you shot my dog...

Ive taken many yotes over the last couple years, and the best way in my oppinon is go out in the snow,or after a snow, for the yotes that have been called ,shot at ive gotten them by knowing where they are going to go,have been seen there ,and wait them out,and most of mine were early morning, dawn,i go out to 50 east at cold springs not nort of reno, hungry valley is my fav though, and n east of mustang, good luck.

also keep in mind when calling, they will come in from down wind 99% of the time. i have called and shot A BUNCH of them and i can't think of one time that one came in to the call from up wind.
also on breezy days you can hang a feather on a string from a bush or a tree limb to ad some movement to your calling set up. works real good .
if you can make your self pass up the coyote that comes in keep calling .thats when you have your best bet at a bobcat. because the only thing better than shooting a coyote that you called in . is getting a shot at "old spots" . good luck

x2 - what a lot of yotesl do is circle you. Instead of running straight for the call, they will circle and come in from the side or try to come in from behind.

i was in south africa in may on a hunting trip. i wanted to shoot a jackel real bad. they look like our coyotes same size a little darker, basicly same animial. any how one morning flying down the road one ran out in front of us.and we hit it .we stoped to make sure it was dead ,it wasn't so it got shot. the guide smacked me on the back and said" you can tell your friends you shot that one with a toyota". mike

West of Pyramid. I figured spotlighting was illegal. So the best time to go is early in the A.M.?

I would love to do some calling. Haven't been able to do hardly any since I moved down here. Wish I had brought my 7mm down. Still haven't set up my handloading stuff, and I think the 150 grains would be slightly overkill. I'll hafta go get some 25 grains for my .17.

Scroll down for spotlighting regulations.
There doesn't appear to be any regulations against baiting.

Baiting of any kind is illegal. You can not bait any wild game. It is also illegal to hunt near a dump or landfill.

night hunting in washoe county is a big negatory.
if smoke creek is to the west of pyramid, then it would be in washoe county. looks like you're SOL unless you want to head to another county.
spotlighting isn't very fun, anyways. just no sport in it, really. it's much more fun, IMO, calling them in during the day and hitting them (the coyotes) from medium-far distances. $.02
not this weekend but the next, i'll be heading out for some 'yote hunting (moving this weekend). i'll also be sighting in my rifle for 1000 yards sometime during the week. so if anyone wants to tag along, lemme know.

The few times I've gone we've had good success calling them in and waiting. They get spooked really easy. But in this outfit, they sure as hell can't see you.

NRS 503.140 Hours of hunting.

[68:101:1947; A 1949, 292; 1955, 86]—(NRS A 1969, 1359; 1991, 266)
Nevada Counties That DO NOT Prohibit Shooting at Night or Spotlighting in the Unincorporated Areas of the County:
1. Churchill County
2. Lyon County (see section 7.02.02 - Discharge of weapons in congested area)
3. Humbodlt County
4. Douglas County (see 9.68.030 Discharge of Firearms)
5. Mineral County
6. Nye County (see section 9.16.010 Discharge Prohibited)
7. Esmeralda County (must be at least one mile away from an occupied residence)
8. Carson City County ( see chapter 8.12 Firearms and 8.12.010 Discharge of Firearms unlawful)
9. Storey County (see Chapter 9.16 Weapons)
10. Clark County (see ordinance on congested areas)
11. Lincoln County ( see ordinance on congested or incorporated areas)
However in the above counties you still can't spotlight game animals. NRS 503.140 is a state law which is precedent over county laws

My dog and I flushed 3 of 'em last Friday, all at the same time and within sight of the houses out here in Coldsprings. Good thing they decided to run, as all I could have done at the time is throw rocks. I guess it's time to start carrying while walking the dog in the desert.
Anyone know exactly how far you need to be away from houses before you can legaly shoot coyotes? I really want to go after those 3, they are way to close to "home" for me (& the neighbor's cats).

I live next to a ranch in south reno and there are a ton of yotes that live in their fields, tons. I called the sheriffs dept about hunting them with my bow and they said it was cool as long as I was on pub land, but I can't remember the distance they told me to stay from houses. It seems like it was much closer for archery but I can't remember.
