More trouble then it's worth?

I have a line on a cheap cheap 4x4 86 s-10, that has around 100k miles on it with a "bad" oil pump. Now being that it has a bad oil pump I'm curious to see if the guy like fried the motor or what, he said it should start right up... If the oil pump went bad, the oil pressure would drop correct? On the gauge? Hopefully the driver was smart enough to stop driving it? lol Possibly just that it's failing, not sure on the specifics.

If it was driven around without oil until it started making bad noises could that of seriously screwed the engine up? (stupid question I know but ) He said it should start so I guess I'll be listening for rod/valve ticks but I can't really think what else to listen for. My main questions are what should I be listening/looking for?

It looks in great condition and if it only has 100k miles on it (broken speedo? ;) ) I think I might pick it up and turn it into a work truck, so I can wrench on my toy. My dad has a well used 89 s-10 with the 2.8 so if the 86 is a 2.8 it should be a direct swap if the motor is bad or worse siezed.

Bumpity :) Talked to the owner, it's a 2.8 with an auto (700R4 i believe)

Anyone ever swapped out an oil pump on a chebby v6?

i have its a pain in the ass but the 2.8 will run forever if you maintain it , but be sure he didnt cook the motor

Yea my dad's 89 2.8 has 294k miles on the odo, never been rebuilt once.

I looked in the chiltons book and it's as easy as dropping the pan and pulling it out from the underside. It's got a 700R4 that needs some work so since it's a very popular trannsmission and rebuild kits are cheap, I'll see how much work it needs and possibly rebuild that too.

I've read all the swap info for stuff such as the V8 swaps but I'm more interested in reliability and mileage with the 2.8 vs swapping it to a V8 or 4.3 especially since swapping the motor is alot of work, damn 4.3's or V8's so much wiring (damn wiring ;) )

I don't suppose the manual 5 speed would be a direct swap for the 700R4 since the manual is a 2wd and the 700R4 is for a 4wd.

Gonna take a look at it on saturday and probably buy it. As long as it turns over and there isn't excessive ticking or knocking.

That's what I heard :) Shouldn't be difficult at all!

Anyone know what it'd cost to professionally get a 700r4 rebuilt? Stock not performance or anything

the hard part is when you look at it look where the front cross member is is goes right under the oil pan you have you pull the engine up to get it out

hehe, I can't imagine you'd HAVE to take the crossmember out to get the oil pan out, drop the bolts and it should slide right out, or over enough to get access to the pump. Although I have never looked at one before they have had to of thought of it when they designed the truck :) The chilton/hayes manual doesn't say anything about removing the crossmember so =/ I guess I'll take a look.
