A couple times I have used google maps, selected My Maps, chose Create new map, and on there is a tool bar to add points and draw lines

Then when I had my route set up I click Link in the upper right

I go on TakItWitMe and paste the link into the space on top and click Load My Map. Then I just use the button Upload To Garmin GPS and the route in in my handheld ready to follow.
One drawback is that I missed a waypoint and it started to point backwards but I knew I wanted to go forward and after a little while it started to point at the next waypoint. Convenient way to plan a route on a map and get it into your gps to follow.
