I just picked up a 98 4Runner and at some point in the future I may be interested in adding a Total Chaos long travel kit to the front. This increases the track width by 6.5 inches, which I imagine I can cover with fiberglass fenders (good thing the Runner is already white). But how do guys typically go about widening the rear to match? Or do they leave it narrower? This whole prerunner/desert scene is pretty new to me but I am trying to learn all that I can.

Do they use Tundra cv-shafts or custom?

You can always get a T-100 or Tundra rear axle and swap in your third.

I would suggest a full width 9" from a pickup. Easy and cheap to find. When I finish your pickup, we can park that 4 runner in the same spot and get er done:D

The kit uses T-100 shafts in the front. I could use the rear from a T-100 but the 4Runner is set up for coils in the back so it would be a little more complicated.

Same goes for the 9", but then I would also lose the benefit of the gears and ARB in the current rear.

Sam I think that my wallet needs to recover before I send the 4Runner your way. It is a capable trail rig right now (ARBs and 4.88s front and rear, winch, bumpers, sliders) but I would love to supercharge it and add a long travel kit down the road so I can bomb the thing. I need something to cover those desert races you know...

The rig has Old Man Emu shocks and coils on it now with ATS uniball upper A arms. It should do a better job at speed than what I am used to but I have a problem leaving things alone.

I saw a 4Runner in Moab with the long travel kit on it and the rear track width didn't look dramatically different but it didn't stick way out past the fenders either. I'll have to dig up some photos...

OK, I found the guy's site.

He wrote "The TC LT kit widen the track by 3 1/2" each side, for a total of 7", the rear is currently at stock width, so it looks kinda funny when someone is following from behind. Most likely I'll use a 4th gen rear axle assembly, since they are wider than the 3rd gens and have disc brakes. "
