I need a part fabbed up... something like this:
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_492929_492929

Basically I need a trailer hitch drop adapter to effectively lower the mounting point of a hitch-mounted bike rack. The adapter in the link is the closest thing I've found, but there are a few things I'd change about it.

Anyone here want to do a small welding project on the side?

For $59 buy it. You will be hard pressed to buy material and labor
any cheaper.

No doubt, unless you already have the material or have the hookup, it would be cheaper to buy one.

cheaper to buy it vs. build it --

Didn't know that... I need to take careful measurements on the hitch clearance that I need, and compare with that one in the Northern Tool catalog to see if it'll work.

Thanks for the input.

Not sure what your trying to get out of the "hitch clearance" yet, if your talking about making sure the extension sits out far enough to miss a cabover camper, or something like that, I have a 3 foot extension I could sell ya.

Its not double like that one, but its way strong and already wired, so your plug in is at the far end, not next to the truck.

I used to have a 13ft cab-over on my truck and that is what I used it for.

Thanks for the offer Jason -- it won't work for what I need though--

What I need is to "lower" the bike rack so that the rear door on a TJ (w/ spare tire) can clear the bike rack when it opens. The hitch mount on my Jeep is in the middle of the bumper, not below the bumper, so there's no way to open the rear door when the bike rack is in the hitch.

If I drop the mounting point on the hitch via an adapter, this will allow the rear door to open. I also have a 1" body lift and motor mount lift that I need to get around to installing, that have the side benefit of providing a little more clearance for this project.

It looks like the one Northern sells would sit down to far once you flipped it the way it looks in the pic.

How about if you bought the female receiver then welded two ears on the top of it and then bolted it to the bottom of the bumper, I think that would work and probably cost about $20 to make. This is what I am talking about http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_137095_137095

I don't want to (semi) permanently mount it to the bumper, so I don't really want to bolt it on, but this has potential --

I already have a hitch adapter that's basically like 2 tubes welded together:
____
[____]___
[_______]

So I guess it'd be possible to weld on another tube to the top/bottom of that one...

Also, while googling for a photo to use in place of my crappy ASCII art, I found the adapter from Northern here for $49:
http://usfreight.zoovy.com/c=bKjf6euhhpmQnYaPebF1FVJjy/product/9164P

I think this still might work -- it would place the "effective" hitch mount at around the height of a OEM-style hitch (under the bumper). Obviously wouldn't work offroad, but that's OK for this application.
