Okay...its another semi-retarded question from me  Is it possible/adviseable to remove the top on an Unlimited solo? I'm reasonably strong and it seems like little more than a plastic tub. What say you? http://www.reno4x4.com/forum//images/icons/icon13.gif http://www.reno4x4.com/forum//images/icons/icon14.gif

Its possable but not reccomendable.
I did it once but I used a block and tackle
from the rafters. "rope and pully" to lift
the top and then drive out from under it.
You most likely will scratch or do some sort
of damage to your LJ or yourself unless you
use this method. You should get help
its much easier.
It only weighs about 125 pounds but its
akward as hell for one guy.

Block and tackle would be the preferred way to remove top yourself, that is the way I have my top stored in the garage, just back up lift top and drive out.
My cousin tried to remove his TJ hardtop by himself and he his is a pretty stong guy, he stumbled when stepping down from the TJ tub and dropped the top chipping the corner of the top :)

The Unlimited hardtop is heavy, like 150-160 lbs total. I removed mine with 1 other guy helping, and it was still pretty heavy and awkward picking it up by hand, then moving it over to some sawhorses.
I wouldn't do it alone, no matter how strong you are, unless you're removing it using a hoist type system. It's just too bulky, awkward, fragile, and expensive if you drop it...

Two of us carried one across the lot (from service to storage) and it was a PITA! Get a friend to help out. Also, how are you storing it? I have a SWB and I'm using a dolly from quadratec. I don't know if the LWB top will fit on one of those but it's damn handy to have around.

I took the top off my cj7 once by myself. It was not easy. I stood under it and kinda walked around with it on my back. :D

me and my wife did it she said she would never do it again.all the racks were on back ordered so i did the math and built one out of two 2x4 and 1 2x6 i flipped it up on its back glass it saves a lot of room.
i can swing by after work if you need a hand.

my puny srcambler 1/2 cab comes off easy for one person to handle. I've always heard once one removes the hard top, it will never seal up as good as before when u slap it back on in the fall. They sell sealing kits and they've never really worked well for me. So now i just use a big fat bead of clear silicone and it stays pretty well sealed up in winter-- getting it off is another adventure...
good luck

Thanks! That 'bad goofy' was trying to get me in trouble again...bastard. I'm thinking it will stay in place for a bit until I get the storage and removal logistics adequately worked out.

I use another person to take my cj7 top off, otherwise I just get in trouble. Last time I tore a hole in one of my seats.:nuke:

I just pulled my Unlimited hardtop last night. I'm glad the GF didn't have to help. The top removal is not a one man job.

After the top is completely unbolted and latched start sliding it backwards on the rails. Make sure the rear tire carrier is out of the way and the rear hatch is open.
Once you slide it back (When sliding it back it is much easier to be standing in the rear of the jeep bent over at the waist with your arms spread out and lifting the top with your back) as far as it can go without falling, lower it back down onto the rails and exit the jeep.
Now that your feet are on the ground, press lift the top off the jeep (At this point you will know if it's balanced). walk staight back and kneel to the ground. Crawl out and drink a beer. It's a pain in the ass and I recommed one of those lifts. I used this method everytime on my tj and I've used it once with the lj. It's easier to use friends. I'm to the point that now I just muck with the tops in spring and fall. Leave it on for winter and take it off for summer.
