View Full Version : Salt Cave May 21 or 22? (Super Easy)

Anybody up for something laid back this weekend? I'm thinking about running back out to Salt Cave (sorta by Lahontan), then wandering around wherever?

Real easy stuff here, any stocker should be able to do it. Salt Cave has hundereds of pictographs (cave paintings), and is an amazing experience.

Just tired of sitting at home working on my car. Let me know if you are interested, and we can set things up from there. My preference is Saturday, earlier in the morning, but I'm flexible...

If someone has another short and easy run in mind (local ghost town?), maybe we can link them up if they are close.

Where is Salt Cave? Any pics on the petroglyphs?

If this is fairly short (can be done by noon or so) I'd like to go.

From what i understand this is out by Lahonton lake (silver springs NV) about 45 miles each direction from reno

Thats a general map just toing out to silver springs since i dont know exactly where the salt caves are at.

I will try to get some old pics up tonight, maybe a basic map. The pics don't really do it justice (first photos I took with my digital camera), but will give you an idea. The cave itself would be unspectacular without the paintings.

There's a bunch of ways in. One comes in from the Carson river and is just a gravel road, you could probably take your honda if you wanted to... Another comes in from the dam side of the lake, follows the powerline more or less, and is a little more adventurous, but nothing to get excited about - some sand, fist sized rocks, that sort of thing. I haven't been out in three years or so, but unless something has drastically changed, 4wd is no where near a requirement either way.

This can easily be done by noon if we leave early enough. Shouldn't be more than about 40 min each way regardless of how we do it.

We can just meet at the Silver Springs Nugget and decide which way to go in from there. I like to get started early, and would personally have no problem starting at 8, but I understand that means getting up pretty early for the Reno folks... So how about 9:00am? It is supposed to be a beautiful day.

I'm interested in seeing the petroglyphs -- did a google search on "salt cave" and couldn't find anything re: rock art.

9 AM Sunday at the glamorous Silver Springs Nugget will work for me.

A few pictures:

Like I said, they do it no justice. Although I am a little suprised that there is no info in it out there, I must admit that I found it somewhat randomly myself. There is a cave shown on the USGS map, and so I thought "hey, I should go check that out." I had no idea there was anything of interest there really.

I would assume it's still a go. I'll be there. If no one else shows, or whatever, I have a few ideas as to some other places to go....

How would I get to wherever we are meeting from Carson? And do you think topping off my gas in Carson will be enough?

You suck. It is now 3:48am, and I am headed off to bed now. I may be just a tad bit late, as my wife is getting off work in Wellington at 7am tommorrow, and she wants to come here and shower before we head out. If I am late it will be just by a few minutes.

The good news is my friend and i started gambling at Casino Fandango in Carson at 11pm, and I just came home over 4 hours later with $60 extra in my pocket... not a bad night.

I got there at 9:30am, and no one was there.... I wonder if anyone showed up. I figured I had missed everyone so my wife and I went to the air show and then hit a bunch of garage sales.....

We waited till about 9:20 or so...

I havent been out on a nice desert run in a long time, so it was good to not have to think about rocks and just blast down a gravel road.

I did actually have to put it in 4wd after I decided to stop in the sand on the way out... Totally avoidable though, so I will stand by the claim of no need for 4wd on this trip.

It's a quick run (I was home by noon), and a nice way to waste a half a day. Maybe I will try to throw some directions together so anyone can wander out there when they have some free time.

Thanks for leading that trip -- I took several pics out at the cave itself, and will try to post them later.

I tried shifting into 4WD on the trail, but the linkage was out of adjustment -- so it's definitely a 2WD capable trail, since I had no choice.

sounds like fun was had by all.

One of my favoritye cave painting areas is Toquima Cave, just east of Spencer's hot springs. it's fenced closed, but u can get within a couple feet of the paintings easily see inside and see all the colorful paintings. Last August i was there and, by chance of good luck, a photographer from National Gerographic was there and a trribal elder had opened the fence gate. I got to walk inside and that was a treat!

Still, in its present condition, lots to see, its adjacent to a camp ground, hot springs and other cool stuff in that area.
