So they wanna close the hirschdale access as well as the access through hunter lake, and it looks like access to the "lake" as well.

I'm ok with most of that but I'd like to keep access to the "lake" open if at all possible

Martis Travel Managment Plan
Attn: Gary Schiff / USFS

Hello Gary,
I've read the Notice of Proposed Action regarding the Martis Travel Management Plan. In the proposed plan there is no mention of a established "Trail Head" @ the Hunter Lake road access point, such as is being proposed @ the Garson road access point. Could a paved parking area, restroom facility, and kiosk be included in this management plan? This would make access for handicapped A.T.V., Equestrian, and Fourwheelers more user friendly.

There is no mention of camping in the mailer sent to me. Will camping continue to be primitive, or will campsites be established (tables, fire rings,etc....) fee sites ?

Is the intent of the statement "Roads would be maintained for use by high clearance vehicles" mean the roads would be left as is( other than improvements @ Big Meadow), or would they be groomed for S.U.V. travel ? I would be against making access any easier, because of the potential for overuse. I would however be in favor of creating more obstacles to enhance the off highway vehicle experience.

I'm not in favor of closing spur roads in the upper Hunter Lake Trail area, unless they adveresly affect meadow areas. These roads provide access for Upland Bird, and Big Game hunters in Nevada hunt unit #194, and California hunt zone X7b. The spur roads also disperse campers in this popular outdoor area.

I'm not a mountian biker, but the idea of having a designated riding area(hopefully technically challenging) sounds great!

In closing, the current " Proposed Plan" in my opinion would give all user groups semi limited access to a good outdoor experience. Some modifications should be incorporated in the "Proposed Plan" to enhance and preserve the area, this project with minor changes could become an excellent asset to Northern Nevada.

Thank You,

Pat Sullivan

After receiving an Email from the USFS website notifying me my comment was undeliverable. I thought about my statements tone. I also read RARE CJ8's post on the "CLOSE HLT?" thead today. The post by RCJ8 had a lot of facts, and was well written. So, I decided to redraft my comment to include mention of spur road closures. I also changed the overall tone. It went from Rodney King style " can"t we all just get along" to "NOW I'M PISSED"! When I completed the draft, I hopped in my rig and hand delivered it to the USFS office in Carson City. The :( bummer is, they again told me that there has been" VERY LITTLE COMMENT FROM THE OFFROAD COMMUNITY"

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!

PUBLIC COMMENT IS LIKE VOTING, IF YOU DON'T DO IT, DON'T WHIN ABOUT HOW YOU GOT SCREWED!

p.s. Rare CJ8 thanks for jack'n me up:cool:

no, just sign it 'we the following concerned citizens' altho sadly the leter will count as one , not many, so the best get is to each do their own. hell, in election years there are all these form emails u can send that each count as a number in support or against. 20 signatures on one page or 20 separate letters... which looks best?

maybe a generic form letter can be produced here and each copy/paste their own personal comments, print it, sign it in BLUE ink (shows original) keep a copy and mail it off NOW! one way or the other, do something or not at all.

or make a form letter and one signed per person. an address is good to include. the gov't must report the # of responses received, so let's pad the bill!

Here is a form letter I am proposing. Print it out, copy it, sign it, fax it and/or I will pick them up. As recommended by Mark -Maybe an Emergency Pizza night This Thursday?

1. We agree with the Trailhead at Verdi, but REALLY wonder why it would not also be at the Pinehaven side, as that is where 70% of the trail usage begins, and with the future Caughlin Ranch building, it may be a better choice as far as connecting to water, sewer and electric for the restroom/parking facilities. Perhaps the developers could pitch in towards this cause, since we all know they will get top dollars for those lots.

2. We do not agree with all spur road closures. These are great for Hunting, Camping, Hiking, and for space to turn around, or to help alleviate traffic on the main road. We cannot tell by the map if Dutch Louie Flat is to remain open, and since we installed the Meadow Barrier there, we would like to see that area remain open.

3. We do not agree to any grading of the current trail, as that can lead to more “un-capable” vehicles trying to use the trail and becoming stuck, or worse yet, it would become another spot for car thieves to dump vehicles as has occurred profusely on Peavine Mountain. It also help keep the kids away from partying all over the mountain.

4. We would like to see some camping areas and/or fire rings added to the area. The current system has people building makeshift fire rings in parts that are unsuitable & dangerous (there currently is a spot on the HL to Moss Lake loopback that is non-conforming).

5. We would like to make sure the road to & along the southwest portion of the HUGE Meadow north of Hunter Lake (where the log dam is) remain open to all users. This is one of the finest views along the trail.

The statement that "The Martis area currently has poor access and is
lightly used" is not based on current usage. From May to September alone this year we have come across at least 5-10 hikers/walkers, 2-4 mountain bikes, 2-3 motocycles, and at least five four wheel drive vehicle on each of our Hunter Lake excursions this summer. Hundreds if not thousands of OHV's, Bikes, and hikers access the crest of the Carson Range from Garson Road & Hunter Lake Road every year.

We feel there is no reason to close most of the spur roads - they provide some dispersed primitive camping and view opportunities, and access to areas suitable for hunting. The spur roads stop at the wilderness boundary on the east and at private land on the west (462B, 462D & 462F). FR 462 and its spurs are part of the Hunter Lake Road/Trail system which the Hills Angels 4x4 Club has adopted and is maintaining along with the Reno4X4.com group. All these roads are engineered roads made by mechanical equipment and not pioneered roads.

There is an ungated access road starting east of the blue gate @ Garson, running south then west to join FR 462 west of the blue gate.

Boomtown has granted the FS an easement across its land to join public land
at the curve junction of Old Town Rd. and Warrior Rd. east of the NDF fire
station. It seems the Forest Service has chosen to ignore this easement. It would
connect with FR 449 south of the Steamboat Ditch.

Furthermore, closing the spur roads (462A, 462C, and the road to Davis
Meadow) denies hikers and equestrians access to the wilderness from these
points, since they could not park their vehicles at the end of these roads. This could also lead “logjams” during the weekends when the trail experiences heavy usage.

If fire rings & camping tables could be installed, we will glady help with the install just as we have done with the two Hunter Lake signs & the Dutch Louie Flat Barrier. As far as the kids using it for “partying”, most of them do not go past the Moss Lake area 1.2 miles West of the Pinehaven Road entrance because they lack the proper vehicle to travel further in.

Kev,
Can you make copies and bring them along to the Bodie trip? Some of us can re-write if there's other concerns that should be brought up. We can discuss more at the campsite if we feel like it.
