My dad just gave me a computer last night for my birthday. It's set up for a cable modem as mine is now. My question is what information do I need to enter in the new computer so I still have the same settings (email, ect). I never really mess with that kind of stuff because I'm not familiar with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, are you talking about email for Outlook or just email for ur cable carrier? What internet provider are you going through?are u just looking to connect to the internet through the same cable line??

Really depends on what e-mail software you are using, I like thunderbird also firefox as a browser, basically you need to find the settings on your e-mail software and copy them over to your new computer. LIke for thunderbird you go to Tools, then Account Settings and you would look under Server and Outgoing Server to find your pop and smtp accounts.

Using Outlook Express it would be under Tools then Accounts and Mail tab.

As far as Internet, your ISP will most likely have your cable modem mac address assigned, and you just hook it up to your new computer and start surfing.

Norm,

If both the old & new computers are running Wndows XP, then your My Documents, Internet Explorer favorites, Outlook email, Contacts and ISP settings can be transferred using the XP User profile migration tool. Is that kinda what you are looking for?

If you are running the new PC on Charter cable, then simply turn off the cable modem for one minute, hook up the new PC to it, restart the cable modem
(wait about 30 seconds), boot the PC and you will be up & running.

If issues still arise, repeat this until you are ready to speak with overseas tech support ;)

The computer I'm on now uses Windows 98. I'm assuming the new one will have XP. It's an e machine. And my ISP is Charter Cable. Thank you for the replies

Are you using Outlook or something norm?? Or do you have to open up a web browser to go to an address to get your mail (like www.msn.com) or something.

As far as ISP settings you should be able to plug the ethernet cable into the PC and be done with it, unless it was set up for your dad's isp in another way.

XP can copy the data drom the old 98se computer using the User State Migration Tool on XP.
On the XP box do a search in help for that, it will run you through the steps.

Or you can just supply the Dinner & the Beer and have us fix that one night.

Charter is my email provider as well. I know it's not too hard but I haven't done it on my own before. I also DO use outlook express.

If it became that much of a problem you know I'd provide the pizza and beer, but I'm willing to bet that it's not that difficult.

One thing I'm concerned with is that my wife's homework is on this computer and I don't have any way of getting it to the new one. I had thought of mounting the hard drive in the new computer or switching everything into the case I've now if it would swap since my old case is taller than the emachine box. Is there some cable that can connect the two and get info that way? My old computer doesn't have CD read/write capability and the emachine doesn't have a floppy drive. Maybe I could just swap that into the emachine. Hardware comes easy to me. It's the damn software stuff that clouds my mind. Once again. Thanx for the help.

Give me a ring, or drop a PM.

Adding the old hard drive to the new PC - making sure the HD jumpers are set old (slave) new (master). That will work the best, but maybe not the easiest.

We can setup a router temporarily to transfer the data. Or just use a USB flash drive to transfer the data (the easy button)
