View Full Version : Peavine trash

Drove around for a little bit on Peavine today. I was looking for an exuse to play around with the GPS today. I marked some wrecked vehicles and other trash. Maybe it will help with another organized clean up in the future.
I wouldn't mind heading up there some afternoon and spotting more junk. The days are getting shorter so I wouldn't have too much time after work.
Anywho, here's an overview of where I went:

Would the fall or spring be better for a clean-up? RHG organized the last one so he would have all of the details to pull it off. We talked about it a bit on the Bodie run.

RHG has every single car marked on the entire mountain, I know because I helped him do it. He was planning on organizing another clean-up run more focused on removing carcas's this fall, after the fire danger went away and the mountain got wet a little.
Although I'm seeing alot of the same thing as the last run, alot of people who say they are going to contribute their time/money/vehicle, but when the day comes no one shows

TOTALLY CORRECT WITH CONNECT FOR $200.00!!! LOADS OF PEOPLE SAID THEY WERE GONNA SHOW -LIKE 60 - THEN ONLY 12 SHOW UP>>>>>WTF????????????
In order for another cleanup to happen we need:
1. Six full weeks lead time for Waste Management to donate a 40 yard container.
2. We need permission from the USFS to tow the cars out because of the fire danger. Last time they were very gracious & let us go ANYWHERE on the mountain (horse/ bike/walking area's) to find the cars & cleanup trash.
The car removal was nixed by the USFS Supervisor as we hit high temps.
3. A couple of full-size trucks - maybe even diesel to get some of the vehicles out that are super heavy with no wheels - they will need to be dragged.
4. Wal-Mart to nut-up and donate water this time, that was totally chickenshiat in June, it was 102' outside both days...."Oh, so sorry, we had to decline your request for a donation of water". Decline my teabag you non-helping at the base of Peavine - Corporate America turd burglars. Again, I will buy drinks & arrange transportation for a group pee-in at the Mae-Anne Walfart.:(
 Maybe even send them a Christmas card with a group photo of the 4x4 MOON.
5. Safeway, Albertsons contacted about water. Wells Fargo & Albertsons will usually donate employees to help any cause. Good on them.

Anyway, my point is the logistics for another full cleanup are OUT there. I did it all last time, and it left me:sick:
I just want to get the vehicles out, all of them, before 12-1-06.
THAT IS MY GOAL. One fight at a time, and that is the easiest first. Kinda like when your at the bar:nervous: :wave:

Well, we should do it soon then. The temps are going down and the fire danger has passed. Maybe sometime in Nov? That will give enough time to get the dumpster set-up.

larry w/ the USFS said with his coordination, the hulks will be removed by a local tow company-- we just have to get them to the roadside--- in the above pix, there are at least 4 cars w/in 1/3 mile of the pavement. And its mostly downhill. Getting a dumpster and the wait time seems a long time to wait-- how about focusing on the cars first and w/ short notice i bet he'd green light it now... and since fire restrictions are now lifter, let's do it. next w/e? They might drag along easier upside down than on the wheel hubs/frame.
if someone has a cutting torch, that would make some if it easier.
RHG, do u have larry's #?

This was the exact plan all along, drag them on their roof to the roadside where the Police would tow them. Although I'm not sure if the fire danger is completely gone, they may want more moisture :P
some of the cars were, off-trail. We had permission to remove them as lightly as possible to get rid of them.
I'd be happy to donate another weekend to clean up efforts, although early november would be the more logical time to try.

I have Larry's email (which I do not know if he checks cause he never sent a reply). I can call him Wed to find out.
A couple weeks and pulling out the cars sounds good, don't want to be winching :censor: with frozen fingers and a shrunken teabag.
How many people we got here that have tow CHAINS - not tow straps?

Anybody ever think of getting a write up in RnR? I know it's a lefty rag but maybe an article there will bring attention to the clean up. I know a few people that know a few people that write for the RnR. Worth a shot.
I work Saturdays so, I'll be in for a Sunday clean up. Might give me a chance to get the kink out of my winch. Anytime in November would be cool with me.

getting folks to show up for one day is a lot easier than two consecutive days. Perhaps a call to larry and pitch the dates-- the tow comapnies may not be available on a sunday. If we wait for snow, we can ski them to the pavement, haha.
just left him a voicemail, so we'll see. BTW, his # is 882-2766 Larry Anderson.
i can rally some HAs and the rockgods could be invited-- we'll see just who shows up. IMO, there's more to wheeling than just chilling out at moonrocks every w/e.

As a test case, i vote we meet one night up there really soon maybe after work and really give it a try and see just what is entailed in moving one of those wrecks. two rigs chained up to a hulk will soon tell us what of time factor to calculate success on a full scale day to be scheduled. Besides, RHG can buy post-test goodies up at blind onion or chewey and jugs.
pick a day and lets rip up there for a look-see.
this may be a good straping/winching exercise on vehicle righting, compound winching, recovery skills, etc.

My f150 drug a 1/2ton cheby with drive train no problem, I think we could get like three groups together to make things go faster, instead of 12 rigs to move 1 vehicle :P
Some of these vehicles still have fluids and tires that roll so appropriate precautions must be taken to prevent spillage or runaway vehicles. Shoot out full tires, stuff to clamp fuel lines, fire extinguishers, etc.

wow! we're a busy lot! RHG mentions this sunday, however, recall a number of members on this board and the HAs will be doing Bronco Canyon and the Petroglyphs this sunday. Leave from Lockwood exit 10am.
Nov 4th is out, since that's the date of our house warming and shop opening party-- uh, ur invited but are asked to BYOB and some food item to share. (BTW, i'll miss the pizza night 11/3-- that night is Fantasies in Chocolate.

Nov 11th is the annual HA run from Bordertown over to Loyalton-- Sierra Valley has a fine route plotted that is new territory for most of us. I wonder if its easier to tug along a wreck when the ground is frozen? Hummm.....My personal preference is to jump in and do it now, even if we only get out one, its a start. If at least two rigs double chain to the wreck, it should come along nicely. The USFS guy Larry has green lighted the 21st and is awaiting a confirming call...so...????

Sounds good to me. Maybe I can get some help getting the kink out of my winchline before moving cars.
On another note, a guy here had his 1960 VW Baja stolen about a year ago. If it's found, he wants the hood to mount on his wall.

so what's the deal? wait for the 21st and do the drag... or go recon it sooner.

thanks all for a great day. we DID make a difference. After denis headed out toward hoge road, most backtracked to the copper pits and a ford ranger in the hole. That was winched out and off the hill. I went back toward home, north and to see how dewnis and the USFS group was doing. good thing. they needed a double strap to get the wreck up one last hill climb. then denis had a run away hulk that darn near passed him om the down hill run. The USFS truck had a sliced sidewall and upon placing the bottle jack under therear axle-- it was too low to the gournd, so the jack would not fit under the axle. what to do? easy, placve a rock in front of the dead tire, drive fwd and t hat forces the axle up and gives room to add the bottle jack.
in all, a great day! good thing i went looking for the lost squadron, otherwise who knows? they might still be camped up there, burning dumped deck wood for a warm fire.

Only 4 rigs today. RHG, Connect, Scott from the USFS, and me. Pulled down a truck cab and looked at a few others. There's still a fire danger to get the 4 we found today. We're gonna need a Fool-size for at least 2. Maybe wait after the next good rain to get those off. I'll post pics and vids later tonight.

Yea today was more of a game plan for when it rains, the 4 we didn't get were due to extreme fire danger and lack of big rigs (2 xj's, TJ, and the forest service truck)
So we kinda cleared some brush and picked up trash, messed around a little bit at the peak :P

Once again it was another fun day with Reno4x4. I was glad to see everyone jump in to rig chains and help pick up the trial of “bread crumbs” left behind every car we drug. Phinx completely filled his truck on the last run, from the pieces and parts falling off the car and two halves of a pickup truck. I thought the cab that Mike was dragging was going to be completely gone by the time we got to the bottom of the hill. A big chunk of the frame that the chain was attached to broke off, and then doors and body parts started falling off. We kept watching the dash getting closer to falling out with each and every rock. I have to admit it was a little exciting when the Ford Ranger that we pulled out of the mine decided flip up and almost roll down the hill into that back of my truck. When saw that thing in the mirror flip up and start coming down into me, my first thought was “That’s gonna leave a big dent!” No problem, got it stopped before it came all the way over, unhooked, got the Big Ford out of the way and several of us pushed it over again.
And thanks to Kevin for that little extra pull to get me over the top of the hill with that last car. It’s the usual story “If I’d hit it just a little sooner and a little harder.”
As usual I’m glad to have met all of you that I didn’t know. We had a great time and was glad to be of help. The Big Ford will be ready for the next time.

No, it's right on the side of the road. Easy pull and drag down to the Hoge Rd. access.

OH Ya, the cop... Someone call the Reno PD because of the noise! The cop just wanted to know what we were doing dragging cars around in a "No Motorized" area. She wasn't unreasonable, just wanted to hear that we had proper approval. She wanted to hear it from Scott but we couldn't raise him on the radio. She did eventually take mine and Kevin’s word that we had proper approval.
As for Bill's Diff; after we pulled the ranger out of the mine I headed down that first hill. The Ranger started to flip up and over. (See Kevin’s pics) I stopped and got unhooked and out of the way. We hooked a safety line to it and Bill's truck. When Bill tried to back up the hill to take the slack out of the rope, he never even moved! POP, Dead silence, and only the sound of gear lube spilling onto the rocks. It walked the pinion up the ring gear and out of the top of the housing. I don't know exactly what front end those trucks have but it looks like a High pinion 44 with an aluminum case. (Cast iron good, aluminum Bad!)

So, we're doing some good and some do-gooder tries to rat us out. Hopefully Scott on sunday got the details and cleared that up. This also shows that operation in the no-motorized area will draw attention, so run Zukes at ur peril. Too bad about the front diff-- i see that a lot when someone pulls a rig outt of a stuck, pulling backward-- the diff guts just ain;t set up to be strong in reverse. With no load, then maybe it just came apart after an earlier job?
One way to reduce a car passing you on the downhill, is to strap it to a trailing rig so it cannot get away.
great pix and wish i had made it yesterday, but honeydo's call!

The RPD lady was nice. People had called in about "suspicious vehicles", then she saw Greg dragging the car through the non-motorized area. We got her up to speed after I told her how beautifull her eyes were:thumbsup:
She did however mention how there was NO WHERE to four wheel anymore...
We know the secret, she will have to find out......

I have more vids. They're not being uploaded by photobucket at the moment. I think it's the wireless link at my g/f's house. I'll try and load them later tonight.

That "cow-bell" was actually my d/s front shock mount crying for mercy. I'm gonna upgrade that soon.

Thanks to all, had a great time on Saturday.
That was me in the Gold 96 ZJ and Tahoe ball cap.
Spent most of the time scatching my ass and trying to stay out of the way, but did manage to help pick up the parts as they fell off being dragged down the hill.
Next time I'll be better prepared with some towing chains.
Thanks for the pizza and a good time, and thanks to Matt (Phinx4x4) for the invite.

I heard from MB that nine cars were dragged and piled up.
Would someone please make a list of attendees, the date, and hours (manhours) spent doing this?
Send the information to Larry Anderson, OHV Manager, Carson Ranger District at lcanderson@fs.fed.us.
Forest Service needs to know the 4 wheelers are keeping Peavine clean.
Thanks to all.

Phil,
I gave Scott Andone with the USFS a list of how many vehicles, people and hours & amount of vehicles removed during the cleanup.:D
Gus, please PM me with your number so I can give you the big picture of you & Mark at the rock garden last year. ;)
