i'd like to purchase a set of headers HERE (http://www.spencerlowracing.com/products/headers.htm) for my Xterra to get rid of OEM exhaust manifolds which have tiny cracks in them and give off a really annoying ticking sound.......plus, the added power won't hurt :D

i talked to the guy at SLR, who manufactures the headers, and he says that the headers aren't CARB legal, therefore, not street legal. they won't hinder my smog checks, so why can't i run them??? or can i??? even if it's not legal in cali., is it legal here???

My question is why the hell would you put headers on an exterra? There are plenty of after market street legal exhausts that have added performance:scratch: My .02$

Personally I would just have the cracked manifold fixed under warranty. How many miles do you have on that thing anyway? Like 80? And they are already cracked?

If you do go with the headers though you should not have a problem passing smog because they will not affect your tailpipe emissions and I doubt that anyone is going to notice them under the hood.

i'm already over the 3K mile/3 mo. warranty :nutkick:

it's got 80K on it and i'm not exactly sure if they are cracked or just a bad gasket at the flange to the CATs......... i just know that the "ticking" comes from that area. i just suspect cracks in the manifolds cause Nissans are notable for this. either way, cracked or not, i'd like to get these.

also, i just noticed that the new headers replace the pre-cat. converter........pre-cat.??? WTF??? you think i'll pass smog with no pre-cat.???

I would imagine that you will still pass the sniffer without the pre-cat.

That has been a problem for years with that engine. SLR in the past has been touch and go with their service, but their products are generally good. I have seen some have problems with the earlier headers, but as far as I know they have worked those out. I know a thing or two about those rigs so let me know if you have any questions on sourcing parts etc...

but your computer might go haywire if the pre cat has an 02 sensor...

every nissan truck of all time makes that annoying sound. my buddy has a 95 pathfinder that makes it, my boss has an 00 xterra that does it, and my 01 frontier sounds the same too. on the PF it's usually right when you push in the clutch, and on my truck it's usually when i let off the gas and start to coast. it sucks.
