I seen this done so I thought I would try it.

Take the amp out and make a mdf cover to replace it. I made a template so I could use the same holes. I used a piece of 3/4" and used silicone to seal it in.

3379
Cut out the lip where the old speaker was mounted

3380
I ground down the ribs so a deeper speaker would fit 4.5" max

Pioneer TS-SW841D 500 w 2.5" Deep
3382
Kicker CVR8 DVC 400 w 4.25" Deep
3383
I filled in the gap with epoxy
3384
After the epoxy was dry I ran the speaker wire and applied silicone
3385
Installed the speaker in the box

Installed in the console one thing I did not show is I added rubber feet to keep the sub from hitting the grill

I have all the math to build MDF boxes for those who did not get the speaker box with there console. I have the DVC Kicker that I will be using for that. When I'm cutting I will make more then one. If it sounds good I will post it up.

Looks good! Let us know how that sounds.

Also, have you made any other changes to the factory setup? speakers, head unit, amps, etc?

I'd like to get the sound in my LJ improved a bit -- factory setup is really muddy, about the only thing good about it is that it plays loud enough to hear it on the highway with the top & doors off. But I'd like to keep the factory head unit and not add amps (less likely to get stuff ripped off that way). If I can replace the speakers in the dash & soundbar, and maybe the sub, and see an improvement for that -- I'll do it.

By replacing the stock speakers and leaving the stock head unit I gained 10 I could go to 27 on the stock head and amp. The most important pair of speakers are the ones in the dash. They must be the best not like Jensen or Sony spend the money. The sub sounds good but I'm a bassaholic. You will need to listen to it and judge for your self. Yes its better then the stock one but not better then the one in the back. I will be making mdf boxes and trying different speakers the problem is its a 8" and a 8" is a 8". Its not mounted in my ride yet I'm still doing R&D so its easy to sit on a front seat and listen.

I'd like to listen to your setup.

If you replaced the front dash speakers already, what did you use? A 4x6 plate, or a 5 1/4" standard coaxial speaker with a bracket?

I've read good things about using 5 1/4" speakers with these brackets:

I used a pair of 4" with separate tweeters and cross overs. I would go with Focal or MB premium or Q's. my 05 has pods in the dash. so I R&R them.

Hey thanks for the great idea. I just finished mine using a rockford fosgate 8". Makes a HUGE difference, i'm really impressed at what that little 8" will do. I took out the stock amp but kept the big heat sink rather than cut out a piece of mdf and it works just fine. I need to figure out a better way to get the plastic away from the sub though. I just used the plastic ring that came with the RF and it buzzes a little when the volume is up.

If you go to ace grab the little rubber feet that are 1" tall for like making a granite cutting board. Pull the top screws out of the speaker and slide them in. I will sell the Kicker and the pioneer if any one needs them they are new.

I can lend a hand. You work around the corner from us. The enclosure is on my bench so we can throw it in the front seat and see if you like the sound.
