I posted the last one and no one came, but I thought I'd give it another try.
Western Nevada Pistol League matches this weekend. Saturday is a Production match (ideal for beginners) and Sunday is the regular IPSC match.
For Sat. the fee is $10 and you'd need 150 rounds of ammo. Ideally you need a double action auto with holster and three mags. If you have something different, we can usually work with you so you can try it out. I have an extra setup that someone can borrow if needed.
Sunday is $20 and you'll need 200 rounds of ammo. There are divisions for pretty much any type of handgun. Stages are a bit more complicated and require more movement.
Range is next to the County shooting facility up Pyramid. Both matches start at 9am. Last time the Sat match was done by 1PM so there would be plenty of time to hit MoonRocks or Steve's Loop afterward.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I understand,

9am is early?
If you show up at 9:30 you'd probably be fine . . .
C'mon weenies! Owning a handgun and not shooting an IPSC match is like owning a Jeep and never leaving the pavement.

First shot. Quicker and safer than single action.

Jed,
I lost the link, can you resend? Can I attend with a revolver and/or my .22 neos semi-auto?

Regarding double action - the 'production' class requires it. Production only matches are generally on Saturday. Sunday matches has all classes (production, limited, revolver, single stack, and open). Single action guns like the 1911 can be used in several other classes. Production class was intended for guns that military and police carry, with few modifications.
Production only matches should really be called beginner matches, as that's what they are really intended for. If you show up with any reasonable handgun, they will find a way to let you shoot and try it out. We have had some people try a match with a .22. However the rules specify a 9mm minimum. Some stages have steel plates you knock down, so that doesn't really work with a .22. Ideally though you need something 9mm or larger, a holster, and at least 3 mags. There is a revolver division but it is not popular. There are man-on-man steel matches in Fernley and Fallon where revolvers are popular.
The club website is www.wnpl.org. The next match is actually the Nevada state championship.

all my double actions are revolvers (.38 and .357), the only semi I own is the beretta (.22). Are there matches for .22 or are the all for 9mm and above?
Thanks for the link

Like I said, there is a revolver division and you can certainly shoot that. You'd need 4-5 speedloaders though, or just take a long time to do each stage. If you showup for a Saturday 'Production' match, you could shoot the .22, we do work around that all the time for new shooters.
I'd be happy to loan a setup to anyone who wants to try it out. I have a Glock 19, Ruger P89, and Sig 226 with enough gear for you to do a match with. Don't be a afraid to show up and try on out. I recently brought a friend who'd fired probably a total of 20rounds through a handgun before that day. He was slow, but got good hits and had a great time.
Spectating is welcomed and free BTW.

First shot. Quicker and safer than single action.
Not true. On a double action pistol you have the longer, harder initial trigger pull - followed up by shorter, easier subsequent trigger pulls (like on a Beretta). On a single action pistol (1911 style) you have the same trigger pull on all shots (when carried with the hammer back - the only way a 1911 should be carried). This results in a quicker, more accurate first shot for a single action. I know, a well trained shooter with a double acion can still get off a quick and accurate first shot - not going to open that can of worms.
The safety factor is only a basis of the pistolero's training. An untrained user with a Glock (Safe-action, no external safety) is more of a hazard than a single, or double, action shooter who know what he's doing.
I've carried a 1911 almost everyday for the last 8 years and carried an M92 Beretta for several years prior to that.
Just my 2 cents.

Whatever your handgun of choice, there is a division you can shoot in. The matches are well run and the safety rules are strictly enforced. Its a good way test your skills under stress, and its a lot of fun.

Didn't make it this week either, was a bit concerned about the weather and did not get the speed loaders for my sp-101 yet.
Does the facility have covered shooting areas or is it all out in the open? RE: When it rains and snows and blows are you wide open to the elements with no cover?
Thanks

The pistol bays have shelters so you can get out of the sun or rain, but you are out in the open when its your turn to shoot.
Weather was very nice BTW.
I forget, is the SP101 a 5 shot or 6? If its 6 and can use the same speedloaders as a GP100 then I have a few you could borrow. I could also loan you a glock or sig to shoot with. The next one will be Dec 2.

sp101 is a 5 shot .357
Thanks for the offer though - not sure I wouild be any good with a glock or sig - the only Semi-auto I have shot in years is my .22 NEO - fun little gun to shoot - maybe we can meet up one day and trade for a few minutes :)
I have some speed strips, but I'm not very speedy with them :)
Dont mind going out in the weather to shoot a match, but wanted to sight in my rifles since I was coming out. Also have a rimfire fun match I wanted to shoot with my mossberg bolt action - crows on a wire.

You really need 3 mags as a minimum and I'd recommend 4. Some stages require as much as 36 rounds. Sportsman's Warehouse generally has mags in stock and aren't too overpriced. Better deals would be found online, but you might not have time. I don't have and XD otherwise I'd loan you some.
That is a great gun to shoot production class in, but you could also shoot it in Limited. The major difference being that in Production you are restricted to loading 10 rounds per mag to even the field for equipment. Limited class you could load them up.
For ammo, use the cheapest thing that is reliable in your gun. The CCI Blazer .40 at Walmart is the best deal I've found on new ammo. There is a gunshow this weekend though and you might do better there especially if you were willing to buy reloads in bulk. Yes the next match is this Sunday the 2nd. I plan to attend so if you'd like to hook up beforehand I could give you some pointers.

I'll post up on friday and let you know for sure, I bought my XD from The Sportsmans, so i will check there for 2 xtra clips, I have a clip holder that came with the gun and it holds 2 clips, and it also came with a holster as well as speed loader, it is still unfired, and un modded. it holds 12 rds in the clip, the sales man told me to avoid the CCI's since they are an aluminum case and told me to stick with a brass case for best results (stovepiping jamming etc..)

CCI Blazer comes in two versions - brass case and aluminum case. WalMart sells the brass cased stuff. Most people find the Aluminum cased stuff works fine - I've always had good luck with it. You need to set your BS detector on 'high' when talking to anyone who works a gun counter.
Sportsman's Warehouse is expensive for ammo. Go to Walmart - they usually beat even the best internet deals on ammo. You may have to go to several to stock up on .40 as they often only have a few boxes of the Blazer at any one time.
Calling a magazine a 'clip' is like telling a guy with a FJ40 'Hey nice Jeep' or calling your wheels 'rimz'.
You need to get out and try that XD! I'll probably go out for some practice on Sat if you want to join me.

I wouldnt worry too much about aluminum blazer in the xd. Most of them will eat anything. I guess Croatia knows how to build a handgun.
You guys going to the match this sunday? I just got a 9mm barrel for my Sig and I think I am going to try and break it in tomorrow. I really wish they were still doing the steel matches, the one I shot was a bunch of fun.

I need 2 mags for it before Sunday's match... (can't figure a better way of breaking in a new weapon).. got my buddy talked into going and he's bringin his H&K USP .45

I love Blazer brass in my Glock 21 but aluminum Blazers work well too. I did find that the alumninum case rounds seem to recoil more than the brass. Why??? Dunno. We bought a case of Blazer 9mm at the last Crossroads gun show and split it but I haven't tried it yet in my Hi Point carbine (that's the only 9X19 I have at the moment)
Well I'm off to the gun show now.

Despite the cold wind, It was GREAT, My buddy Aaron wants to go again. The XD is great, I'd like to change the sights on it for a set of HIVIZ sights, the factory 3 dots are alright but could be improved on, and I could use more familiarization with it as well, All in all it was a great day...:thumbsup:
I am pretty sure we might attend the next match, and will be a bit more preppared.
