I just got a Motorola Droid X. I want to use it as a GPS for mapping trails and seeing where I've been (as well as letting me know where I am). Is there an app that will make this into a decent GPS without stealing my identity and buying hundreds of music downloads on me?
We tried it over Memorial weekend and there was too much snow about half way up, then we tried again in the middle of June and made to the spot but there was still about 3 feet of snow. There was no snow up there today and found it. Got the "kick in the balls" wing sauce recipe Cashmoney was talking about a while back. What a nice view from up there. Here is the link. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=bad9382f-6868-4847-89d1-acbee4790a54 There is a deer in the middle of this last picture.
Seems like finding them is fun. But what is the best way to hide one, and have people know about it?
In talking to several of the members yesterday at Smash's swap meet they expressed a REAL interest in a large screen GPS using Google Earth and a laptop or netbook. I made my system and it is so awesome being able to follow a trail on a screen you can actually see. I think we should have one section of thifroum just for Google Earth, a front end program like GooPS and a USB GPS. It could be applied to any trails and we should make it so the users can download .kmz or .kml files to suit their purposes. The great thing about Google Earth and these front end programs is that they're free and they work great. Since most of us would like to run the bazillion trails around here, it wouldn't hurt if we all became experts at Google Earth.:) What do you say Denis??
I'd like to get a GPS that I can carry while hiking and biking, and hopefully also use for street/trail mapping in the jeep. oh and I want it to be cheap :chuckle: Any suggestions?
Im looking for a nice GPS for off road mainly but i will probably use it for both on and offroad. what are some good GPS'S out there... my price range is 100-200
I like traveling with my GPS, mine are only handheld units. I like seeing where I am on the map, what is nearby, things like that. I haven't used it to find a route for me yet. If I am going somewhere new I will have planned my trip on a paper map. All I am saying is I don't completely trust my GPS. I go off on my own quite a bit and think they are a great tool but not the one to completely rely on. Anyway, I have heard of these stories happening more often about people getting lost or stranded because the GPS told them to take some forest service road instead of using common sense. I wouldn't be following a 16' wide dirt road I wasn't familiar with in order to save a bit of time. I am going to stick with the established routes. The same thing happened with the Stolpa's up in northern Washoe County back in 1993 but you can't even blame GPS directions on that. I am not the smartest guy either but come on. Read more... im still trying to get this started but i went wheeling today by topaz lake and picked up two caches on the way back. if you have never done it go out and try or go out and set your own up on some trails so you have to wheel out to them:D
I still have a few prizes from the raffle that no one have picked up yet. This is last warning to the ones that received an email, or a PM notifying them about their prize, if not claimed by this Friday February 13 2009, the remaining prizes be placed out as Geocaches in the greater Reno area for a scavenger hunt weekend... Scavenger start time, coordinates/maps will be published when all caches is placed out. You will be able to participate even if you don't have a GPS, maps will be published together with the coordinates. Volunteers to place out caches is welcome.
Just found 'Google Earth ' very easy to use and gives GPS.
I have a buddy wanting to sell me 2 of these in new condition. Haven't had a chance to use them much yet. The retail is $350 a piece and he will give me a 2 for one deal. I already have a Garmin Venture and use it all the time. I like the radio feature on this one, would come in handy out running around with a buddy using the other unit. Any thoughts? https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=146&pID=182

From my research this looks like a steal! Any input on this unit would be great. Thanks  http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11491434&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1
Thinking of buying this unit for both in-car navigation on and off road, as well as hiking. Seems like it has all I need, just wondering if anyone have it (or 550) and what's your opinion of it.
Im enjoying my new(used) Vista C color gps with mapping capability, thanks Dennis! I have been playing with OSM (open source maps) and I think I have it figured out so I thought I would write up how I have loaded street maps onto a handheld gps. First I downloaded an img file of Nevada at http://downloads.cloudmade.com/north_america/united_states/nevada#breadcrumbs I used the nevada.img.zip file. Then I used a program called, wait for it, MAPupload. Heres a link where to get this freeware, make sure you get the correct program, MAPupload. http://www.mapwel.eu/down.htm This worked very well for me but then I needed more. I am headed to norcal and the link where the nevada img file is had a cali link but the img file was HUGE for the limited memory I have. The way I got around this was to use open street map and save just a portion of the state. OSM saved the file with an extension .osm. Just visit the Open Street Map website, zoom in on the area you want, click the Export...
Does anyone carry the large hard mounted GPS's in town...7"-10" screen ones with topo and all the dirt roads you can load? I need one for my blazer..
I bought one off ebay last year, can't figure it out... Its a Garmin iQue M3 Pocket PC integrated with GPS I thought it was just a GPS when I ordered it, good price. What about a cheap lap top to use for GPS only? Nice big screen ya know.
Anyone have any experience using a SPOT?
I've been using a Garmin 60Cx for a couple of years now. I love it. Its accurate, has a big screen, does turn by turn and is loaded with features. But it was "new" a few years ago so I've been looking at what is new now. Reviewing what Garmin has released since, I'm not really wowed by the Colorado or Oregon series. So I was looking at other manufactures and found this, the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40. Not only does it include topo and street maps but you can get USGS 7.5-min. topographic quad maps, Color Aerial Imagery, Color Satellite Imagery and DOQQ Aerial Imagery that you can combine with the topo maps to make a hybrid view. Throw in a 32-channel STMicroelectronics Cartesio chipset with a Dual-core processor... :mouth_water: And the kicker is Amazon is selling it for $269.99. Thats less than what I paid for the 60Cx without maps (I spent another $200 on the maps). I'm happy with my 60Cx but I've got a serious case of GPSr envy. Please someone tell me the PN-40...
Who's Downloaded topo maps of areas around here? I was wondering as to their size. I just bought the garmin etrex legend (the basic model) and it has 24mb of memory and I wasn't sure as to how fast thats going to get eaten up with maps.
The European Union is in the launch phase of a new GPS system. http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/energy_transport/galileo/index_en.htm
Ok What is a good GPS for the money????? Selections: $100-$200 $200-$300 $300-++++
A couple times I have used google maps, selected My Maps, chose Create new map, and on there is a tool bar to add points and draw lines Then when I had my route set up I click Link in the upper right I go on TakItWitMe and paste the link into the space on top and click Load My Map. Then I just use the button Upload To Garmin GPS and the route in in my handheld ready to follow.
Since moving , I can't find my western states disc from Map Source , for my Garmin legend cx. Does anybody have this disc? Could you burn it for me , or just let me borrow it! I will buy you a 6 pack O Beer...... Thanks.
