Ok lets here some new idea's for camping and Overland travel. This is one we use when were out with Camping. When you have kids and they need to use the bathroom at night its nice to have light already to go, plus its nice in case you hear the "noise's" out side your tent in the middle of the night. Plus it is even nice to just have your camp light up at night. Our camping tip: We buy the Solar landscaping lights they work great as night lights! We buy the spot or flood lights instead of the side walk lights. Then we charge them up and keep them in the sun with the switch off, so when we go camping they are ready to go. Then we set them up around our camp (we use about 4 lights) so they will illuminate all around our camp. This also makes it nice so you don't have to run your lantern for long periods of time. they will last about 8-10 hours of good solid light and start to dim out near sunrise.
I will admit this is not my idea, I am completely stealing it from Kurt Williams. That said, I think that it is brilliant. For the last two years, guys in Utah have gotten together for the weekend to camp, and drive, with nothing newer than 1979. More info here: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/home/49904255-76/camping-relic-gear-run.html.csp Would anyone in Reno be interested in a run like this? I think that it would be a blast. I was hoping to join the Utah group this year, but work commitments kept that from happening. I am already gather equipment for next year though...
just wondering what kind of tents people have tried and used..good and bad weather use...i have a cheep one thats 9'x12' ..its been a great tent except when the weather gets bad...

EDIT: Seems like there might be enough of an interest in this to get a group discount. We need at least 20 people to get the $10 off. Wanted to throw this out into the forum and see what you guys think. And, yes I realize it's a $50 trash bag. But after some of the experiences I've had with plastic and canvas bags swinging around off of my spare and ripping open or leaking inside my Jeep I'm willing to try this out. SPECS (GENERATION 2): Available Colors: Black/Desert Tan/OD Green Material: 900 denier nylon canvas Strap width: 3" double stitched
We are planning a camping trip got the first week of June and we need some suggestions. We were planning to hit up Gold Lake but with the late spring there's still 5-6 feet of snow there. Looking for something within a 2-3 hour drive at most where we can take out the boat for a little fishing and do some wheeling.
mine is as simple as going to the store on back roads to finding places on maps in other states to try and find for a few days. just wondering what others on here do.
Im gettin outta town this weekend... Wanna head to the coast and camp on the beach. Does anyone know where I can?? Ive been looking on tons of websites and none of them say directly that you can camp on the beach. Any tips or favorite places are appreciated. Thanks in advance
So I just got my ARB Rooftop tent from Chris at Sierra 4x4 Trailers, and this thing is Awesome! Thanks again Chris for giving me such a good deal and working with me with delivery. The first couple of pics are of the thing all packed away, pretty compact considering the size of the tent. It can hold 2 full size adults comfortably. Attaching it to the roof rack was easy. I just had to attach the supplied rails to the bottom of the tent and then bolt it to the rack. I had help from my girlfriend and my dad, and we all made it out of the experience alive if that tells you anything. The cover zips onto the base of the tent so there is no loose material flapping around at high speeds. To set up you basically just open the thing up with the ladder. The picture of the inside doesn't really do it justice. It is roomy. The last picture is of the sleeping pad, about two inches thick and really pretty comfortable. One of the best purchases I have ever made. I can't wait to get out and use...
My mom first told me about Exped's Downmats about two years ago. I just rolled my eyes at the time. "Why would you need down in your sleeping pad?" I thought. I have always been "hardcore", and just used a small backpacking mat when I am camping. I got used to moving around and changing positions every half our or so because my hip hurt. Well, apparently mother knows best. She bought me one for Christmas 2008 and I have used it a ton since then. I honestly think that it is more comfortable than my bed at home. During the Dakar Rally I slept on the roof of our MAN truck every night for 17 days on this pad. By the end it was dirty and smelly, so I contacted Exped about how it should be cleaned. Then sent me an invoice number and I shipped it back to them and they cleaned it so it looks like new. For free! I didn't think service like that even existed anymore. This is the last sleep pad I will ever own, check them out at: http://www.exped.com/
Can you camp up there? I have been up there several times, but never an at night. My buddy and I are considering atving up there and camping but I did not know if it is legal. Are there any fire restrictions? Where would be a good place to leave the truck/trailer overnight? Thank you.
Hey guys. Well I'm getting antsy to get out and do some camping with the weather warming up. I haven't had much time to get out lately and explore so I'm turning to you guys for input on locations. I'm thinking east would be the direction to go to get away from any snow/elevation/cold as much as possible. With that said, I don't know of any good places to camp that fits that description this time of year. Preferably with some trees and scenery and not too far from Reno(i.e. 100 miles or so ideally). Any ideas are welcomed!
So I'm looking into getting a food dehydrator from cabelas and was wondering what kinda things you guys like to make to take on the trail for snacks and meal type stuff
Anyone here been gold panning this summer? Got a favorite place you'd like to share? Or mabey not. ;) This summer I went gold panning for the first time. My brother has a sluice, pans and buckets, so we took my mom gold panning when she visited. She hadn't been gold panning since she lived in Marysville back in her 20's. We went to the Middle Fork Feather River outside of Quincy. A short hike and a cool river rewarded us for our effort. What a great way to spend a day. Since it was my first time gold panning it took me a bit to learn the proper technique. I quicky caught on and it was definetly lots of fun. We didin't strike it rich (I'm still working for an hourly wage) but we did find gold. Only a few tiny flakes, but none the less it was gold.
Does anyone here have experience with Suburban camper heaters? I can't get mine to fire. I was going to take it out of the camper again. I am thinking it is a bad circuit board. I don't think it is a thermostat problem because I made a toggle switch bypassing the thermostat and it still won't fire.

Next August at least one friend (yes, I do have some!) and I will be flying to Alaska to do some hiking. We are looking at about 50 miles round trip spread out over about 6 days. We will be by the Denali Wilderness Area, but we will not be in the park. Anyone familiar with this area? Also any tips as to the best way to get our guns with us? I know I can have them in checked luggage, but I have heard horror stories of guns disappearing. Any tips would be great.....

Have the leaves changed in the thomas creek area yet? That was always a real pretty area to hike in the fall
The lady friend and I are planing on heading out to Dog Valley campground for a couple days to do some hiking and rockhounding at Crystal Mine. Has anyone here camped there? Dug at Crystal Mine? I just wanted to get some first hand knowledge of the area. Thanks Mike
I have my Cabover Camper that has a single door fridge. I have a couple questions about operation of it. It can run on LP Gas, 12V, or 120V. So When we are at camp we put it on the Gas control and it works great but takes time to get cold. When driving I had it on 12V power which its connected to the battery in the camper which is charged by the Alternator from the truck while we are driving. It does not seem to be cold after driving 6-8 hours, well not as cold as using the gas function. It this normal? Plus the 120V function does not seem to cool the fridge down that fast when we are at camp and have power at the site either. Is there something wrong with the fridge? Or do these fridges not cool that well on battery and 120 power?
Saline Springs - Death valley, anyone been..... Gps coordinates.... Mileage, Suggestions? Thinking about makin a 3-4 day weekend out of it........
Anyone besides me and Rarecj8 going? I'm headed out this Wens, is anyone else is going out early to help build? Dysmonia is our camp name and we're at 4:30&E. Our sculpture is called "The nest of recollection" and it's on the playa in between the man and Opulent temple, Which is normally 2:00 & A. There will be plenty of PBR so stop by!
