I will conduct the inaugural 4x4 Ragchew Net tomorrow night at 20:00 ( 8pm ) on the SNARS Ragchew repeater on 147.39+ pl 100.0 enc/dec. We can change it to another time and day if the consensus is to do so, but for now the consensus seems to be for Friday at 20:00. If this takes off, I will need some alternate Net Control Operators. If you are interested in being a Net Control Op, make a post under this thread or shoot me an e-mail at ke7dzz@charter.net. I hope to see all of our licensed amateur Reno4x4 members on the net, I will also post this on some local list servers to see if we can generate some more interest with the folks in the area that share our interest in amateur radio and goin' wheelin'. 73 de KE7DZZ :D
Since the blog is gone and I can't seem to get a sticky, I'm creating this thread were I can edit post #1 with the updated member listings. My attempt at simplifying the process of finding the "latest and greatest."
WARNING: This thread contains minimal quantities of bacon. If you're browsing this thread to feed your love of bacon you shall be dissapointed, so move along...there is nothing to see here. Well, now that I passed the test, I want to know who else on Reno4x4 is a ham... I know RareCJ8 (call sign?) and mdtrader (KE7GFS) are hams, who else?

Hello, Reno 4x4. After a home was secured for my two meter repeater system. I have decided to create a PL tone for the Reno 4x4 group. As well as the high level repeater, Reno 4x4 is welcome to use the NVLLRC system as well. (more on that) Please visit http://kc7stw.com and register for updates and news on the repeater system or systems. (not trying to advertise my site. Its just easier for me to update and keep news current there) The repeater for the Reno 4x4 group is open to all hams that are apart of this forum, as well as other hams. The purpose of this repeater is to allow the 4x4 community the chance to communicate with each other, discuss 4x4 trips, builds, or other things. Fishing, hunting, dirt bike riding etc. In hopes that this repeater will allow the younger hams, a venue of fun communications. With out the fear of being kicked off, or interrupted by nonsense communications. There is no time limits, or other rules like you will find on the club...
Since i got my License i have been told 3 things about how to let family or friends talk on the radio. 1st) say your callsign and hand the mic over 2nd) say your callsign then controlling. 3rd) say your callsign say controlling 3rd party traffic. i take great pride in my license so i asked an ARRL instructor 2 years ago at emcomm he said " you dont have to say nothing just hand over the mic" so i thought no more about it tell a couple days ago after continuously hearing "callsign controlling with 3rd party traffic" so i sent and email to ARRL asking proper procedure. the reply was: ""The FCC doesn't lay out specific procedures. Part 97 simply says that there must be a control operator with the proper class license present at the control point. The rules don't say you must say "conducting third party traffic"; they don't say you must be the person keying the microphone, etc. They simply say there must be a proper control operator. It is up to the individual how to make...

I was given a Cushcraft R6000 that I do not need. It is about time for it to move on. Pick up in Washoe Valley. The Cushcraft R6000 multiband vertical covers the 6, 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 meter bands. The R6000 is a no ground radial antenna. It includes many of the features of the R7000, R7 and R5 antennas. R6000 means excellent performance, easy installation and use, slim silhouette and high reliability. There are no traps used on 6, 10 and 15 meters for maximum efficiency and power handling. Installation is easy and for or typical use, tuning is not required. This antenna features automatic band changing to any band 6 through 20 meters. R6000 Specifications

How come, when I operate on 10 and 6 m, both my computers freeze up? I have two computers in my shack. An old running XP and used for radio control of my FT-897D And a new running Win7 64 bit. If I transmit on 10 or 6m, both freeze up. It does only happen on that two bands......
Look north tonight and the next few-- we might get some good colors to the north. Last time I recall NL visible in this area was 2001. Get away from the city lights... Space Weather News for August 3, 2010 http://spaceweather.com CME IMPACT: As expected, a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on August 3rd. The impact, which occurred around 1730 UT, sparked a polar geomagnetic storm. At the time that this alert is being written, sky watchers in Europe as far south as Germany are reporting red and green Northern Lights. If the storm sustains itself for a few more hours, people in North America might see a similar display. Sky watchers in Alaska, Canada, and northern-tier US states such as Wisconsin, Minnesota and Maine should be alert for auroras.
Picked this up from T.O.R.MAN today. An Astron RS-50A power supply. Now I just need to build the j-pole.
Sure has been silent on this part of the board...

Is there a nice printable version of all the "Q" codes. I googled it and found some sites but they are usually broken up in paragraphs w/the authors statements. I want to laminate them like I did the band plans. This will help me learn them better, 10-4 :) Thanks, Jim
Here can you listen in on 75/40 and 20M http://www.w4mq.com/
From ARRL website: 07/27/2010 Beginning July 28, those who have dealings with the FCC will have a new tool that the FCC claims will put them “within one click of all the information they want” from the Commission: a new “easy-to-use” Consumer Help Center. “Our new Consumer Help Center makes it easy for consumers to learn about our work and take action,” said FCC Chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau Joel Gurin said in a press release. “Here, in one place, consumers can do a number of things, such as read about consumer issues, get practical advice for avoiding problems, file a complaint, comment on our rulemakings, or read what our FCC experts are saying in our Consumer Blog.” The Consumer Help Center is produced by the FCC’s Consumer Task Force, an inter-bureau group established by Chairman Julius Genachowski at the beginning of 2010. The Task Force has led several recent initiatives on major...

Last time i was in the LA area scanned and found the W6NUT repeater. WOW is all I can say. The chatter of off-color language is beyond belief. Full-on drunken sailor type language. Their site explains they tolerate gawd-awful 4 letter words on the air but nothing obscene. Huh? Anything even remotely close to that here would get one banned, yelled at and the AO likely sending you a nastygram. So why do they get a pass from part 97? Or is nasty language prohibition only a suggestion? you can listen live here: http://www.435online.com/ seems the FCC agrees
I would like to get help with installing ham radio in jeep. Any recommendations who to go to? Paul Jr

Worldwide VHF Contest this Weekend http://www.cqww-vhf.com/rules.htm I would love to set up a team and work from Peavine. Peavine is a pretty rare location. Saturday morning anyone?
In a state of ecstatic joy that Kati made a QSO (contact) with the ISS, I shared my joy. I have received some PM from people expressing that they feel like idiots, because they do not have a clue, but a 10 year old have...... First of all, ham radio is something you learn as you go. You practice and study for your test to get your ticket, and then the learning starts.... Good thing is that you learn at your own pace.... About the ISS QSO...
I am so proud!!!!! K7KTI made the ISS today, and had a 30 second qso, exchanging name, location and weather..
