WARNING: This thread contains minimal quantities of bacon. If you're browsing this thread to feed your love of bacon you shall be dissapointed, so move along...there is nothing to see here. Well, now that I passed the test, I want to know who else on Reno4x4 is a ham... I know RareCJ8 (call sign?) and mdtrader (KE7GFS) are hams, who else?

Is there a radio that would allow me to listen to ATC (air traffic control)? how expensive are they? I'm mainly interested in reno tower and approach at 118.7 and 119.2

Since this section is a little dead. I will post a link to this ReconRobotics topic. http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2010/02/25/11361/?nc=1 Now if you read that. How do you think this will impact the 70cm band?
WTF Chicken Band mixed with Ham radio?! Great....
Anybody familiar with Radio Shack PRO-164 scanner and Trunking programming?
I love this.... Full radio control from my computer. I took my old desktop and cleaned the hd, reinstalled windows and loaded Ham Radio Deluxe. Then I hooked my Yaesu FT-897D up via a CAT cable. So, now I can't just do PSK31, but I have full rig control from the computer. Added benefit is full computer programming of the radio and all its functions. My log program in HRD automatically record time, band, and frequency while it download info about the other station from QRZ.com and upload to eQSL.cc and LoTW.
Post up what you like and dislike about the current issue of QST here for discussion. I liked the article on air core coils. It was very well written and useful. I bet the Q on those babies is great. The SMT article was a just OK, his technique is a little off but in general accurate. If he had been using the correct tip and diameter wire solder the wicking part wouldn't have been necessary. I'm interested to hear what more the experienced guys have to say about the 2 Meter Log Periodic Dipole Array piece. It looked fairly straight forward to construct, would it have any real advantage over a yagi?
http://www.emcommwest.org/ should be a good show. The trade show is worth the effort to go and see the cool stuff and pick up some parts. The swap meet 5 am! WTFH? That is the middle of the night! What is the attraction to open a swap meet so darn early? Guess all those old farts get up at 4am anyway... For anyone interested in amateur radio, here is a chance to see it all in action up close and in person. I'll be there, will you?
I wanted to know if there were any test dates coming up before the one in February. Also, if there was one in over the hill in Sacramento that was sooner, could I take it down there or do I need to do it in Nevada? Thanks for the help - Josh
That's correct. Ham radio is done as we know it. No need to buy a radio when you have your iPhone. Piss off all the club repeater owners by using your phone to connect, and rag chew all day and nite. When they kick you off the repeaters because of there ten minute rules. Just close the echolink app and QSY over to the cell network. http://appshopper.com/lifestyle/echolink

Many hams as well as many that are not hams are weather geeks. For all you weather geeks, check this out.
Any of the local sellers have an NMO mount w/cable? Will a lip mount work on a truck bed tool box? I suppose it'll need to turn 90 degrees. If not may go magnetic. Thanks
The following call signs were valid about a month ago and i made a list: For the zero call sign area. N0FUN N0SHT N0FU N0CAR N0ASS N0EAT
I have a paid subscription at www.mods.dk mods.dk is a database where you can download almost any manual related to HAM radio. I hardly ever use my quota, so if you need a manual, email me, and I will retrieve it for you.
The ad in QST caught my eye, just wondering what the community thinks of this radio.
I am just babysitting this radio but it will be on my bench for at least a year and a half. http://www.universal-radio.com/CATALOG/hamhf/FT990.html The receiver on this is awesome and the the built-in autotuner might be just a tad over awesome. 160 thru 10 on my my 80m dipole. I worked some groundwave on 160m today just to check it out. I think i will be working some IOTA stations next month just to put it through it's paces.
I see lots of people using "discriminator taps" for monitoring trunking control channels. I recall years ago people using one scanner with the tap to "drive" another scanner (probably early way to follow trunking before trunktrackers). And I read where people are trying to use scanner monitors and feed that to a sound card. Wouldn't a good 800 mhz radio like a Maxtrac or Spectra work better, or do these have to be mulit-freq?
Where can I find the most accurate listings of repeaters in Northern NV/Northern CA? I'm going to be driving between Reno and Sacramento a few times this holiday season so I'd like some repeaters programed in for the trip! Searching came up with some, but I know there are guys on here that make that trip and may know of some active ones. TIA!
Black Rock (Nevada) Amateur Radio Association News There's now an emergency phone patch available in Gerlach. It's been installed by the Black Rock Amateur Radio Association (BRARA), http://cq-blackrock.org They have a new repeater at 444.175 PL 100.0, IRLP node 7249. I'm told the IRLP node is temporarily down. To access 911, simply enter 911 on your DTMF mic. You'll get a recorded message saying
