Anyone on here familiar with the ins and outs of echolink?
Is it something that requires and special equipment, or do you use the mic/spk on your confuser and talk like roger wilco(or xbox live) ?
The reason I'm curious is because as most of you know I'm new to this, but my mom's uncle in MI has been a ham operator for a long time and I would be thrilled to make contact with him somehow

All you need for Echolink is a mic and headphones ( external speakers not recommended) and an amateur license.
Once you download and install the software, you will need to register your call sign with Echolink. Once registered, you may have to play with router and firewall configurations to get the correct ports opened.
With that all done, you're good to go! http://www.echolink.org/
IRLP is a different animal, and generally can only accessed via radio.
There are a few Echolink and IRLP enabled repeaters in the area.
W7RHC has a good Echolink box on 442.55 pl 110.9. Hop on there and ask for W7NIK (Nick), N7KP(Steve), KB7IWT (Erv), or K7BFD ( Al). It is generally a good idea to ask permission before using an Echolink or IRLP node. This repeater can also work the other way around. I sometimes connect to it via Echolink on my pc at home and chat with folks down in Reno.
