    Home Built RV's

So when my wife and I were driving home from WA this last weekend. She brought up that, she thinks it would be neet to build our own RV.
We were think something like a Unimog, but maybe one of those forestry trucks with the crew box on the back, I think they are Internationals?
we would want a 4-door model, and would like a 4x4 model too.

Were do you even look from one of these that is used?

    What do you guys think??

Why so big? I guess if you really want creature conforts of an RV then I understand but for long distances those things can be a bear to ride in and drive. I was looking at a 4x4 3/4 ton tow vehicle with accomodations and came across this http://www.sportsmobile.com/4_4x4sports.html
Extremely overpriced but a used 4x4 van can be had cheap. It should be easy to work on and parts availability should be good. I found a couple of candidates locally on craigslist before I went with the Hummer and Evolution. Look through theres an amazing amount of stuff they shove in these things. If your only 2 people shouls be enough room to fit in comfort.

I have seen alot of Uhaul toy hauler builds. They are not 4wd but they can be built right to also carry a jeep inside and they are an International Diesel.

Thats like saying...why do you drive a Hummer???

I have a Family of four plus some dogs...and we plan on one more kid in the future, so we could use the room.

Todays RV's will not handle the off road life very long, they will start falling apart while bouncing down the road.

Plus its different, just like your hummer, there are far better rigs out there that are better then a Hummer, but you like it so thats your choice.

I would like to "build a off road RV that can carry 4-5 people go off road and stay together while doing it....but I don't want to spend $100K on something.

I would like to do this to a Unimog, and still might but finding a 4door one for a good price , is tuff.

I have always thought a military 5ton with a cabover type RV body would be cool. With a walk thru RV you wouldn't need a 4 door, passengers can ride on the couch or other seating in the liveing area.

Well you neglected to involve the 4-5 passengers and dogs info for calculation.
You also mentioned something about parking in camp grounds and parks and road trip in.
Doesn't sound like 4x4 offroad adventuring.
Out of the box pure survivability durability and capability I'll put the Hummer up against most other vehicles anyday and twice on Sundays.

Back to my question of why wouldn't an extended 14 passenger type 4x4 3/4 ton van work? If your building it yourself all you need is the platform which should be had for a reasonable price. Road tripping in the van should be easier than driving a forestry piece or unimog around. most of those vehicles aren't made to cruise at 70 either. Licensing insurance I don't know where to even begin with that.
If your set on the type of vehicle in the pictures then my best answer is to talk with this guy Doctor Cheney his is not exact but he might know of another model in the surplus bin for you.http://www.nevadashooters.com/showth...?t=453&page=10

I thought the Sportsmobile was cool too! Nameless

I like the idea of the Unimog as the base of the build the most. It would be nice to find something along the lines of a desert race chase truck also but again you are talking big money. You could even run a unimog with a tent trailer body bolted to the frame which would maintain good road manners and still expand when you reached camp. Now if you want someplace for the kids to sleep while traveling that wouldn't work.
