    Garmin Nuvi 500

Thinking of buying this unit for both in-car navigation on and off road, as well as hiking. Seems like it has all I need, just wondering if anyone have it (or 550) and what's your opinion of it.

Denis ... as it was told to me by the rep at Sheils the 555 is the only one that does both streets and full detail trails. :dunno:

For trail use you want something a little more dedicated to off-road, something that can save routes, waypoints, and track back feature. Good thing about off-road units is they can also do turn by turn, may not have the voice but that is not needed anyways.

I have one and bought the Topo US 24k West SD card. It has a lot of trails, only problem I have is I cannot find a way to turn the topo lines off. They kind of clutter up the screen when you are way zoomed out. once you are zoomed in though the trails are easy to see. I have done basically no trail riding with it yet, so I don't know how accurate they are. Pretty good unit. I bought it to use as a speedo since my tires and gears are off. I like it.

My friend in Fallon has one and we use it quite a bit when we are out chasing rabbits

It has trails that you cant hardly see in person and has saved our ass a couple times.

He also uses it to geocache

Well, I just ordered it. I had some gift cards for amazon and some store credit, so I "only paid" $58 for it. I'm not into geocaching, so it doesn't have to be super accurate. It will be mainly for on-road navigation, but I wanted it to work off-road as well, so this fits my needs. I'll post my review once I get it.

I have the nuvi 500 with the Western Topo card. I use it all the time out on the trail and coyote huntin'. It does have some great trails mapped out and the topo is pretty nice. I like it for going out hunting because of its sturdy construction and water/dirt "proof" case. I like it and for the price it doubles as a great road trip gps. If you do get this with a topo chip you can turn the topo on and off if you do want and its very easy to mark a spot and back track from it. I my oppinion its a sweet little unit.

well got me a nuvi 780 and took it to the con and logged the trail that is missing on the 2010.20 map. this thing worked great except for when i stopped under alot of trees then it showed my r2d2 running around everywhere.

hope fully if things go right i will map out from the tahoe side to ice house side. while we are there this weekend

It works. Great on the street, turn by turn navigation is good. though it's kinda slow recalculating when the destination is 300 miles away and you make a major detour. No major offroad use yet.

I am making the assumption that you have not had a 500 as it does all you mention. I had one for about 2 months and it was good over all but I got it when it was 500$. But the battery life started to decrease and I guess I had some buyers remorse. I might consider buying one now they are 300$.
It is a good unit you can the 500 has good on and off road maps, 24,000:1 you can get 7.5:1 if you want. It is some what ruggedized compared to most navigation road gps. And you can replace the battery, 50$.
So yes get one it is good. I currently have a nuvi 250 for the on road and it is amazing where the maps will take you I have been in the middle of no where in Moab and it guided right to where we wanted.
Call if you want more info.
    cheers
