    Remote Start Install

Now that winter is rollin up again im lookin at some remote starts for my truck. I found some really good ones for a very decent price different places online but i dont know if that is a job i want to tackle. Does anybody on here know how to install a remote start or anybody that does it for a good price? Also what kind of costs am i looking at getting one installed? Thanks

yea, i work with low voltage electrical work and can wire up lights all day long...but ive seen wiring diagrams for those things and thats not somethin i would trust myself with. i would manage to screw it up so bad that i would have to turn the key forward to turn the car off

the one walmart sells is inexpensive but not really a cheap unit. It works good and is easy to install. Sometimes things really dont have to cost an arm and a leg. And yeah some people are against walmart for whatever reasons but for me it comes down to money.

do you know what model they sell. cant find any remote starts on walmart.com. also im looking for ease of installation because i think some of these install shops are crazy on the pricing. thats why i thought the wiring harness might be really easy

You get what you pay for. I can say in my shops defence that we have cleaned up and fixed alarm systems from both of the above shops, and many others in town. Also, if you use a factory add on remote start that works off of your keyless entry, then you have to remove the driver side door and run a wire into the door lock actuator. A good installer takes his time and black tapes every wire. I promise if you tackle this yourself, you will get frustrated and you will wish you just paid someone to do it. Most shops will back up their work so if it quites in a few weeks/months then they will fix it. If you do it, no warranty.

if i do end up going with a professional install it would be for sure with you. i personally think best buy and nevada auto sound and similar places are hokey, i just wanted prices to compare to. i just dont remember it being so expensive a couple years ago when i first looked at them.

then this wiring harness really got me thinking. im still curious if it is what i think it is. just plug and play?

I have never used a T harness. On a add on remote start all you have to do is tap into the accessory, ignition and start wires. You only need to cut the start wire if you have a starter kill feature and a relay. The best way is to peel back the insultion and solder the connections but if you use crimp connectors and tape everything well, you will not have any issues.

Are you wanting to do a add on that uses your OEM keyless entry or a seperate remote control? Keep in mind the range of your OEM keyfob. I have a Viper 5900 on my car that I can start from the casinos when it is in the parking garage. In a open field type of parking lot I can start my car from a good 3000 feet away.

Keep an eye out for remote starters that have keyless entry. This way you have one remote that does it all and you get the extra range.

Remote Start got put in today. Works awesome! Clean install too. They put the sensor just above the rear view mirror. From the inside it cant be noticed under normal driving, and from the outside it is completely hidden in the tint strip and Reno4x4 sticker on the windshield. Very happy with it. And i can even start it from my bed!
