    Peavine is Closed!!!!

I was just at Peavine to run my dogs. I usually run them to the upper reservoir and back down. This time I noticed that every trail except the main routs on the whole mountain have big posts in the middle of them. The posts say the trail is closed and is off limits to any motorized vehicles. These signs are every where and were not there before. Basically ant trail that could not be run by a low rider truck is now closed. Personally I think it is BS and we should start piling rocks at city hall so we have a place to go wheeling.

i was up there about 3 weeks ago and saw the numerous closed signs. Some were under snow, so they were placed there before the snows hit. Sadly, the signs are a a part of the new peavine motorized travel management plan which was in the works for several years. I'm looking for the thread now, but notice were posted seeking input from the users what trails they want kept and those that they do not. How many letters did you write or meetings did you attend looking over the new trail system? Probably not too many here. These land closure issues are real and unfortunately many wheelers don;t care to get involved and only complain when they see a sign or gate. The anti-access folks are very well organized and they have time to push their agenda but why does the 4x4 community not care until its too late? Damian, not beating on you bro, just a general observation. And city hall has noting to do with it-- its all on the federal level by the USFS.

Some think the road closure alerts are like chicken little crying the sky is falling, but this time it did fall. Get caught driving on a closed trail and face a stiff citation. They are out there-- i passed a ranger on a quad going up fence line (which is open for now) 3 weeks ago. This process is happening on the HLT area and places north and south all the way to Bridgeport. All of the national forests are revising their travel plans and unless you object, then don't complain when you are locked out of long-time used trails. Complacency will get you a gate. Now that the posted trails are officially off limits, even if the sign is vandalized or removed, it remains a fact that trail is closed and you will get ticketed. We are expected to know the map and which trails are open.

the new trend is an assumption a trail is closed unless it is specifically marked open. This is bassackwards but its the wave of the future. Join BRC, Cal4Wheel, United 4WD or other land access advocacy groups. Write letters, go to the scoping meetings, or lose your riding trails.

One interesting observation: there are many new and freshly pioneered mountain bike routes on peavine and they are not affected by these closures.

Hear me now, believe it later.

What is also on the closure wish list? Moonrocks. The reno/sparks piaute tribe loathes motorized recreation there. they claim its a place of spiritual importance. Say it can;t happen? Look how the Washo tribe got cave rock closed to climbing. Trails such as billy bob and twister are on their wish list as well. They point to littering, irresponsible shooters leaving trash, old appliances, etc in hungry valley and the federales listen--yet the cry from the motorized user groups is pretty quiet.

what else? Little sluice will be forever changed this coming year, many long used by passes are to be closed. Soup bowl is to be off limits. million dollar hill to be re-routed. The USMC wants to expand into johnson valley and seeks closure of 'the hammers' to public use.

What is the point of an over built rig if there is no place to ride?

Get involved, speak up or forever hold your peace. Watch for announcements on upcoming meetings.

I think that they should get a $2000.00 fine for each sign that they have littered all over the mountain. What a F--kin eye sore!

Why don't we have a "Nevada Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs" ? I wouldn't want a big yellow Cal. sticker on my rig !

Nest time you see my rig, look closely at the large stickeron driver 1/4 panel:

    Nevada United 4 Wheelers Association

This used to be a state wide advocacy association that had all the several nevada 4x4 clubs under one main group. guess what? It is disbanded because no one was interested in paying dues to get a newsletter, a sticker, t-shirts or learn about land closures. So apathy killed a great idea. You may not want a Ca sticker on your rig, but it is a fact Cal 4 Wheel does many great things to keep open trails and fight trail closures--clear creek and the like. They have intervenor status on many pending closure law suits, like Surprise Canyon and others on the chopping block. They offered some heavy pulling when the lefties tried to close wilson canyon down by yerington and helped resist the lyon county wilderness designations. Come up to Meadow Lake in early August for Sierra Trek and learn more, or go to

    www.cal4wheel.com

Edit: holy krap, an early version of my rig and Crasher Tim's TLC are featured on their home page! And the Cal4wheel convention where that pic was taken was held at the then reno hilton.

How much effort does it actually take on our part? There are a number of organizations to join that help us keep public lands open to the public. Join as many as you can. Pay the dues. Go without lunch for a couple of days to cover the costs. Letters need to be written? I'm sure there's a few of us that can host letter writing "parties" at home.
We have people like the Albrights, Phil Bender, and Mark that take a lot of their time to help keep these trails open. The least the rest of us can do is take a little bit of time and help them with their efforts.

Think about the vendors on this site. If our access to lands is blocked, what reason do we have to spend money at their establishments? If you can't go "wheelin" what IS the point of devoting time and money to your rig? Do you want to see one of your own close shop due to lack of interest?

Have you spent time trying to educate others on the issue? The anti-access groups have a great PR machine that portrays OHV users as a bunch of yahoos that love to destroy the country side. What about your coworkers? Your in-laws? Do they know that the great majority of us fit the TRUE definition of environmentalist (conservation, taking care of the wilderness so that future generations can enjoy it, preserving the natural beauty of our lands. This goes all the way back to Teddy Roosevelt)?

And these points are just the beginning.

This is the same as politics. Ignore it until it infringes on their livesand freedoms... Get pissed off and complain to immediate friends... Then end the conversation with "O-well their going to do whatever they want anyways" and re-joint the heard of worker drones the next day so they can continue to pay 40% of their paycheck in taxes to fund the very people that are taking their rights away!

This is really disheartening. By the time I can afford another wheeling rig, I might not have anywhere to use it

    Mark,

Thank you for shedding some light on this situation. It helps people realize that closures arent just "hot air", they are definitely real.

Like its been said, take action. Do your part. Support the organizations that are fighting for us!

We live in such a beautiful area, that we sometimes take for granted. I encourage you this upcoming season, to take extra garbage sacks and pick up trash. Also, take the time to stop and enjoy the view. Park the jeep and walk off the beaten path, you are bound to discover new and exciting things.

Do your part. Keep it clean. For me, for you and the generations to come.

As far as I know the wheeling community fought tooth and nail to keep the bastards out of the Rubicon. Trails are closing and the box is getting blown. All that fighting didn't do anything. They have too much money, we have too little resources. No way to fight them.

Looks like we will just have to pay to play. And even if 4x4 parks open up, they will still come and shut them down. They can take your land, your life, and you can't do anything about it. It doesn't matter how far away in the boonies you go, they will still find you and shut you down. I'll bet they would ban you from driving in radio active, bombed out, landfills.

Get used to the new world. You have no rights unless you have more money than your neighbor.

Problem is just like in any user group in all sports is the irresponsible ones. You confront the yahoo's on the trail that are being unruly, drunk and doing stupid things. Problem is when you do confront them they outnumber you and you can figure out the result of that confrontation.
How many times has anyone seen a rig gush oil all over the place only to do nothing about it? How much crap have you seen on the trail only not to pick it up? How many drunk asses have you seen on the trail creating big fires at camp only to say nothing to them?
This can go on and on, reality is, the bad apples always seem to outnumber the good apples.

From the days of WWII and up thru the CJ's, YJ's,TJ's and JK's, the name JEEP has been synonymous with off-highway vehicles. Why don't we hear the Chrysler Corp Jeep Div. jumping into this fight? You'd think they would have an interest in this.

I say we go up there in mass this spring. Organize a protest with every single member of reno 4x4 up there in there rigs on a specific trail that has been closed. some where on top then call in a report that someone is driving on closed trails and wait for them to show up. what are they going to do then. also get the media involved and see if we can get a picture of a few hundred rigs posting it on top of peavine in the reno gazzette and the reno news and reveiw.

I'm down if anyone else has the balls.

Violating the closure will get everyone involved a hefty fine and ensure the closure of other areas, thus ****ing the rest of us over. If we quit leaving garbage, going off the trails, and drunk driving, then maybe they will quit closing areas. It doesn't help that we name trails after this behavior: Budweiser Canyon aka Bud canyon anyone. We need to be on top of the people that we see trashing the wilderness and quit doing it ourselves.
