I want to remove the air box and...

...make a place for a second battery there so what will I need to build a short air filter and reattach the pcv valve? I want to use like a K&N short round filter. Any ideas?? I know I'm a pain but I'd rather so this armed with info than just start ripping things apart. My ZJ has a 5.2L engine and it seems like that bigass air box is a waste of space.

Do not run a wet style air filter if you like for your air flow sensors to stay clean.

Find a smaller air box at PickNPull, that will fit your air intake, but not too small as to restrict the air flow.

You should be able to make any one that will fit a Dodge truck with the V-8 work. I think I saw one on craigslist a while back. It's basically an open filter and a couple pieces of tube with an air hat for the throttlebody.

Ditto on the K&N style wet filters. Lots of guys run them, but they tend to oil up the sensors and you have to clean them up. They also don't stop as much dirt as the factory filters that are in good shape.

Have you thought about just putting in a bigger series, or an Optima deep cylce starting battery?

Not the point. I want a battery that I can run stuff off of maybe all night and worry about not being able to start the engine in the morning. I had a van with a two battery set up and it worked great.

OK so here's what I did...pretty huh? Now I have a BIG place for a battery. This battery will be a deep cycle. Maybe even a marine battery.

Now build a shield around, all the heat off the driver side header will soak right up into that filter.

Well I'll tell you Denis there already is a heat shield on the manifold and I was watching Horsepower TV and they had a Cherokee stroker with almost the exact same setup only on the right side over the 6 cyl manifold. The only differnce I could see is theirs filter was a K&N and mine is a Spectre. I think the heat from 6 cylinders would be 50% more than the heat from 4 cylinders..don't you agree?

So I guess it can't be done

Looks like it can't be done right? WRONG it is good!

I even have room for the isolator and the auxiliary wiring.

    The tray

So how does the second battery hook into the system? I know the isolator allows it to maintain charge from the alternator while stopping it from providing power to the system unless you engage the isolator... But where does everything attach/wire up?

I had thought about running a second battery for emergencies that just hooks up to my primary battery to kind of self jump... But this seems better.

I have a 200 amp continuous duty solenoid(isolator) coming and all I will be doing is hooking the ground to the frame or engine or other ground point and hooking the positive from the starting battery to one terminal on the solenoid and the positive from the aux battery to the other terminal and wire from a hot ignition source to the trigger terminal to charge only when the ignition is on. As for the accessories I will be using terminal blocks of some kind for attachment points. Very simple. I will be running my winch lines and at least one big inverter. Who know what else I'll stick on it..HAHAHA. I also plan on putting in several 12v sockets..like lighter sockets... for the accessories. It's very important that you use a deep cylce battery for the auxilioary.

Ahhhh... Ok so the battery will be primary power source for all accessories without being in the regular system. I like that idea, thanks.

In return, here's a picture of my homemade intake:

Yup. It's a filter called the Apollo by K&N. Supposed to be a "closed air" intake system, comes with a lenth of flex hose to route it to fresh air. I bought it and ended up not being able to run the tube anywhere useful, so I just kept using the filter until I get brave and cut a hole in my fenderwall *gulp*

Well that's cool. I have that Specturm filter and it's really good. I noticed Kragen's had one just like it for I think $46.99 and I got mine at Pepboys for like $26.00. Unbelieveable difference in prices. Too bad Pepboys is all the way down on McCarran and Virginia and I'm out here in Fernland.

Well hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday I will be able to take some pics of the completed set up including heavy duty terminal blocks and the isolator. I just purchased 10 ft each of red and black #4 wire and will be hooking up the quick disconnect to the aux battery for my hitch mounted winch. I'll bring it through the grill and put it on a disconnect switch. That will be my first aux 12v connection. I will also be putting in a triple or quadruple 12v socket for whatever I might want to run and I may hard wire my 700 watt inverter so I can run my puter and maybe the pump to inflate my blow up doll....oops I mean my pancake compressor.

I really want to take an across the desert trip to Gerlach/Empire this spring/summer some time but have to be sure I can manage everything I need and the junk is good to go.

    FINALLY!!!!!

Finally got 'er done today now all I have to do is start hooking up accessories...radio is in. Pretty clean set up I think.... for a dummy.

BTW- Fired it up and ran it and nothing blew up, overheated or caught fire so I reckon that's good.

Hey Zip, there is a Pep Boys on Prater way, between Pyramid and McCarran in Sparks, that is closer to you that the one on Virginia.

How short can i make something like that intake? Would it be possible to just stick the filter onto the throttle body on a 97 2.5l?

Actually all I did was pull off the stock flexible pipe and add that chrome tube and the filter. It just worked out great on my 5.2L. Just had to drill the PCV tube hole in it. Best place to look at all that stuff is PEP Boys. They have a whole shelf of just air filter parts.

So all the accesories run on the secondary battery, which can be run completely dead while letting the original battery power the vehicle as usual? Awesome!

Where did you wire the isolator relay to now to correct the check engine light?

Yep it is kind of cool not having to worry about maybe being in some isolated spot overnight and running a few "appliances" and still being sure you can start up in the morning.

I didn't change the wiring. Apparently when I first wired it the computer saw the extra draw as a fault and threw the code. I just had the person that checked the code reset it and it's fine now. No more engine light.
