    Looking for some direction with CB and HAM

    Talk about a complicated new set of hobbies. I just ordered the study manual to prepare for the HAM testing. I'm confident that studying will clear the waters in some areas, but the hardware aspect is still pretty daunting. I'm planning on holding off on the HAM equipment until after the class, but I'd like to get the CB stuff handled soon. I'd mainly use CB on the trail with those who don't have HAM yet. My Jeep is a bit challenged for interior space, so something compact, yet powerful enough to be useful would be perfect. I've heard that the handheld CBs are pretty useless, anything worth looking at in that area? Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help.

    I have a Cobra 19 DX. It works well, and is compact. Compared to my Yeasu FT-8800 though, it's kind of like using a soup can with a string tied to it.

    That Cobra looks pretty damn small, I think I could make that work.

    Any value in something like this?

    I'm really liking all the stuff on this mobile transceiver. With the remote face I could put the main unit elsewhere to save space if I am understanding correctly.

    Aaron, don't waste your money dude, on a handheld, very limited range (a joke) , hard to handle with about 10 AA batteries which get eaten quickly, not to mention a hassle and costly, can't hear from a cheesy little speaker, etc, etc. useless as radios get.... you're much better off getting one of those cobra 19s and a mag mount antenna, an external speaker, then just put a male lighter plug on it......that combo would be a minimum and would suffice for talking to other rigs within sight, and not much more, and do yourself a favor and talk to someone who KNOWS about radios and antennas...not to someone who bought one and hooked it up and claim it works....well over half of members I know and have CBs sound like crap because they fail to learn the basics and make no effort and don't want to deal with cons of proper antennas and mounting options.

    Keep studying your ham book and learn about RF, things should make more sense about the hardware aspect of radio communication.

    Thanks Pit, great advice. I'll get the Cobra and try to fit it in somewhere, while leaving room for something else too. I have several good places for antennas on the back of the Jeep. I'd love some antenna help from those in the know.

    Your CB will benefit from your ham knowledge as well, considering that antenna theory still applies to it.

    If you want to know about antennaes and mountings, KN0CW is probably the best with Alan71 a close second. Either of these guys will gladly help you out and steer you in the right directions. There are lots of possibilities, but only a few "best answers"

    Always here to help, just ask the question!! Any radio on the trail is better than NO radio. CB hand held radios do eat their weight in batteries and will probably give your arm a workout as well. Once you get your Amateur radio license, you will enjoy "trail" communications so much more. Having a Mobile CB radio as well is handy as not everyone is a ham. Like others, I have way to much radio crap in my jeep. VHF/UHF,CB, APRS, and 900 MHZ. You are always welcome to come visit me if you like. Just PM me and Ill send you the address.

    Wow, its awesome to have that kind of help. I ordered a Cobra, and a FT-60R to get started. Once the trans is done in the Jeep I'll take you guys up on the offer to help get the CB set up right. After I understand ham a little better I'll ask some more questions then decide on a unit for the Jeep.

    if youre set on a hand held cb go with this and use an external antenna http://www.walmart.com/ip/10603644?w...l5=pla&veh=sem its rated at 4 watts just like any other cb. For a mobile cb though i'd go with the DX19 cobra like renojeepster has, I run one as well.

    Just so everyone understands, Most mobile CB's only put out 5 watts, regardless of their actual dimensions. The amount of bells and whistles is what makes them larger. For trail runs, keep it simple. Your radios will take a beating and buying a large expensive with lots of shiny crap on it will just be a major waste and in jeeps like my TJ mounting can become a real PITA. You are unlikely to make a contact outside of our group as we all run on CB channel 16. Keep in mind the more fancy buttons and stuff, the more dirt and other things can get in!! Many a radio has given its life to the "oops" moment when the adult beverage or soda went flying. Check garage sales and thrift stores.

    For CB I use the Radio Shack labeled version of the Uniden Bearcat
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...odsInSession=1

    Radio Shack has them on sale from time to time for around $30.
    What it has;
    Preset switch for ch 9 and 19
    40 ch
    full legal limit power

    What it doesn't have;
    Scan
    PA
    Etc etc.

    I use it with a mag mount Wilson antenna and a cig lighter adapter so it can move from rig to rig fairly easy.
    So far it has been more than adequate for my CB needs on the trail or highway.

    I've yet to use any of them on the trail but.... I have a Ham, handheld Ham and a handheld Cobra CB.

    My theory is such.
    1. HAM will reach from just about anywhere I'd expect to be wheeling (of course accounting for obstructions).
    2. Above HAM will Xband repeat allowing me to use hand held HAM just about anywhere I choose to get out of the vehicle or hike.
    3. CB is small, generally group trail run groups and the handheld will suffice in most situations.

    If you plan on getting a HAM license I'd spend as little as possible on a CB setup. I only have one because its what truckers and many wheelers use, otherwise I'd just have the ham(s). If you dont have xband repeater function on the trail a buddy who does can share the xband freq with you and you can talk back to home if needed with a handheld..

    I'll bet the only differences are cosmetic. Uniden makes Cobra, Bearcat, Radio Shack, Uniden, and probably a few others as well.

    I just never usually see the 19's that cheap. Half of the guys in our truck abuse and spill all over the CB's so i'm about to use a less expensive option than the cobra 29's that are in most now

    There's a number of places you can get the cobra19 for 40.00. locally off the shelf, for roughly 15.00 to 20.00 more..... great for low investment equipment and very compact. I've had one in my rig for a time with an inexpensive power mike and a decent antenna and have had a number of remarks that it talked well above average.

    Many members of the off-road community have CB radios because they are cheaper, and don't require a license. Ham radio is much better for all around use as well as trail use and we try to push for more ham radios on the trails for better communication. The only time I ever turn on the CB is on trail runs to talk to those who don't have hams. Get your license and a decent ham 2meter radio and your communication worries are over.
    When on trail runs, often there are other hams listening in from home and "keeping us company" along the trail as well as being available in case of any emergency.

    I would argue that a CB install can as expensive as a 2M install. My son has more invested in the CB on his big rig than I have in the FT2900+antennas for my trail rig.
    Antennas are a wash, you need a decent antenna for whichever radio and the cost will be about the same for either band.
    The ham license is cheap and a lifetime investment, skip one pizza night and you have saved enough to pay for the license.

    So it comes down to the radio, an entry level 2M will cost about the same as a mid range CB that is one that offers scanning.

    FT-2900 the first link I googled;
    http://www.gigaparts.com/store.php?a...FQ_ZQgodwT8AvA

    Cobra Nightwatch the first link I googled;
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA19P0NE6346

    If you shop around you could find the CB for less but not much more than $30 or $40.

    If you skip one night of pizza and the beer you have saved enough to pay the difference. (I do not endorse skipping beer, maybe skip two pizza nights instead.)

    off hand I don't think it is uniden that makes the boards. But from the service manuals I have the large frame CB's are the same board, from Galaxy, RCI, Cobra, President, etc. The smaller frame CB's are different from a few manufactures.

    and power is 4watts AM and 12 watts PEP SSB.

    Dynascan, is the parent company for Cobra.
