    TENS unit ?

Any body here use or know much about a TENS unit? (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator)

I've been thinking about getting one for my back. I've had them used on me before at a chiropractors office, and they can definitely help out. I'm just not sure about the cheaper ones.

Anyone have one that they would recommend?

Be careful infringing on peoples 2nd amendment rights with your 1st amendment rights, because you probably wouldn't like it the other way around.

You mean that thing they put on your back and it feels like ants are crawling around? Basically its stimulates the muscles in a pattern with varying intensity. If that's not what your are refering to ignore the rest of this post.

If so I found the associated physical therapy much more helpful.

It did feel good after my physical therapy sessions. But at $30 a use I opted out after the first two rounds (the stimulator not the therapy).

BTW if you are having back problems check out "Treat Your Own Back" by Robin McKenzie. It was given to me by my physical therapist and has all the exercizes I paid her $80 a session to show me.

My daughter got one as a prescription from her doc and her insurance paid for most of it. She liked it so much, she still uses it well after shes all healed up. Of course, my kids just had to get me with it while I was sleepin and boost it up to full power... That was one helluva wake up call!

Yeah, that's what I'm referring to.

It helped relax me before getting my back adjusted. That's what I need right now, my lower back and hips get tight when I'm sitting or standing. I'll check out that book. Exercise is probably the best way to fix me, but now I'm too sore.

Talking from personal expierence, physical therapy has finally made my life livable. I've been thru sugery for lower back pain (I had a laminectomy at age 21) and just last year a bulging disc (I was out of work for three weeks and couldn't return to full time work for two months). The physical therapy turned me around.

Prior to seriously hurting my back last year I had been living with daily back pain for around 6 months. I was munching 800mg of Ibuprofen three times a day every day just to take the edge off of the pain. I now know if I had started exercises back then I would have been far better off much, much sooner.

I used to build medical grade (cannot be purchased by public) and its old old old techknowledgy. It works to a point but really most physical therapists will be able to teach you better techniques. The home units arent allowed the output of the medical grade ones so are much less effective.

I have plenty of backpain myself I spent Sat playing WoW because I couldnt move after working on a well/pump all of Friday. My back pain is mainly imballaced muscle structure of all things. I have very strong back muscles and weaker stomache muscles so it pulls by back out of alignement . My PT showed me excercises and if my lazy self does them no pain.

for me, I love the unit. I broke my back 3 yrs ago and now have 3 rods, six screws and a full metal cage in my back. I use my tens alot. It stimulates blood flow to the areas and with the increase of blood flow, you get in creased Oxygen to the muscles. muscle cramping is caused by a build up of lactic acid in the tissue and the increase flow of blood "flushes" the acid. You should ask your doctor to give you a script for the unit. a good one can cost over 1500 buck. (mine cost around 2500). It is true though that core exersises are good along with knowing your posture.

    Hope this helps.
