no problem dude. If you don't have time to do the cram you can just take the test in the morning, I got a book from the internet by Gordon West for the Tech class license that made it easy to pass the test.

For most trails I use my 5W Yaesu with a mag mount 1/4 wave dual band antenna. Seems to work okay, in fact I usually set the power to mid level.

BTW I got my tag about a year ago

Is your call a vanity? I ask because you have a 2x2 which used to be just for advanced class, but I looked you up and you are an extra class.

No it's the one assigned by the FCC, I guess extra is the new advanced?

In my case the extra thing is kind of bogus, I didn't study much for the General or Extra test. I'm and Electrical Engineer so a lot of it is stuff I've been using for 20 Years.

I have very little practical experience as a HAM. I passed Tech and Extra the same day but missed General by one question, went back a couple of weeks later and passed General with 99%. Since I already passed Extra I went straight to Extra from Tech.

It seems a lot of old timers resent us "No-Code" extras. I was not well received on the HAM forums, basically they ignored any post I made. I guess spending six years in collage and over twenty years working in electronics doesn't count as earning my chops.

mine has wroked flawlessly for years. i have read about the internal voltage sensor going bad, such that it will not 'see' the new form of input power. usual fix is a new transformer. mine is awesome and i like having frozen ice after 5 days on the trail and all others are drinking warm beer...hahahahaha

I think I've seen your rig at Bullys on Steamboat Parkway a couple of times and over at Totally Of Road once or twice before they closed.
    It's looking good
I like the size of the JK for overland trips. Big enough for gear but not to big for the narrower trails.

i do not like the cigar style power plug. it may not be getting the correct DC voltage to run. I cut off the plug and installed in the rear of the jeep a trailer hitch style plug. Added the male end to the DC cord and from the female end of the socket ran heavy duty lines to the aux battery, fused + and - of course. Works great.

i did this because the earlier effort using the cigar plug was a failure-- at high amp draw it actually melted the plug and shorted the circuit, blowing the fuse only. So the hard wire hook up is desired. it was a gooey mess.

i would try the DC input w/ a known good source-- could be ur lighter plug is delivering insufficient power. try another vehicle? or cut off the lighter plug and try to hard wire it, but use in-line fuses.

This was actually a aux socket I put in myself with 10ga wire direct to the batt. tested the socket with other things and it works perfect. I gota get some time though and I was going to do just what you said and try the hard wire thing to make sure its not a polarity prob, thanks for the ideas though

When my Engle is not in the Jeep, I have it in the garage, plugged in and I have not had any problems whatsoever. Definitly oneof my best purchases.

    Since this was bumped..

I have been a HAM since 1996. KC7STW. Jason is my personal.

As I read this thread. I noticed the comments on the license only being good for ten years. I would like to add the license is good for your entire life, IF you remember to RENEW it every ten years.

Beside that.. I really have enjoyed the reno4x4.com and have found more HAMs here then I have on other sites.
