GOOGLE EARTH, GooPS, a GPS and the NETBOOK

In talking to several of the members yesterday at Smash's swap meet they expressed a REAL interest in a large screen GPS using Google Earth and a laptop or netbook. I made my system and it is so awesome being able to follow a trail on a screen you can actually see. I think we should have one section of thifroum just for Google Earth, a front end program like GooPS and a USB GPS. It could be applied to any trails and we should make it so the users can download .kmz or .kml files to suit their purposes. The great thing about Google Earth and these front end programs is that they're free and they work great.

Since most of us would like to run the bazillion trails around here, it wouldn't hurt if we all became experts at Google Earth.

    What do you say Denis??

Do they have the route mapped out yet??? If so we can just get it, put it in to Google Earth, plot the course with a path and save the file as a kmz. Really easy...that's whay I'm so hot on this GE....GooPS stuff.

BTW- What happened with the Wheel Pigs?

For those that didn't see this on the other topic, this is what the GE with GooPS looked like Thurday when I was leading the caravan back to Lockwood from the glyphs. It is just so easy and precise it's scary...well not scary but....

Bill I have a Microsoft 360 not Motorola. Those are really pretty cheap. You can get one on ebay for about $40.00 with software. Just plug it in and run GooPS.... not in demo mode though. It's all good.

I have feeling there's going to be a lot of wheelers here using the GE, GooPS, netbook setup. Just plain out blows the wheels off a small screen GPS with topos.

You don't have to be techy at all just know how to click on Google Earth and move the map around until you find the spot you want. Hell you can even just type in a location like I did with the petroglyphs or Nightingale and GE goes right to the spot. If you put your house in as your starting point for everything it automatically goes there and you just fly around from there. Really pretty easy and really cool. Your not slow!

If you need any help PM or email me and I'll do what I can to help you. That's why I want to start a forum for this so everybody can input to it as it applies around here. What do we care about the Appalachian mountains or even the Rockies or NYC for that matter.

Well I tried Earth Bridge(free program) today with GE on my netbook and it actually works better than GooPS....WOW. Two problems I noticed though. #1 you can't change eye elevation by using the thumb wheel... it is set in the EB program and #2...which is a really bad problem... you can't start Earth Bridge off line...it just plain doesn't work at all. You must start it on line then it will work fine when you lose your connection. GooPS starts off line and works fine. The on BIG THING I like about Earth Bridge is it rotates GE to point in the direction you are going just like a regular GPS. In fact you can pick one of a bunch of direction options. I hope to learn more about EB but I don't think I like the not being able to start it off line.
