    Good 4x4 caches

I did a few caches close to the house this weekend.
Now I remember why I hate urban geocaches so much.Looking through a pile of landscape rocks next to a street for an Altoids tin is not my idea of fun.

Next time we will head for the hills.

What are your favorite 4x4 required caches?

Well me and some buddies were up by Hunter Lake a few weeks ago and they have iphones and looked up a geocache up there, not the best gps system for finding em but with a little triangulation and some guesswork of where we would have hid the geocache we ended up finding them. I think there's websites with listings of all the geocaches, Im normally just with someone who has an iphone so they do all the web surfing/gps work and I do most of the searching lol. If you have an iphone im sure someone has made an app for that.....

There is. Geocaching.com makes one that locates all the caches in a predetermined area around your current location. The iPhone actually seems to be a pretty good platform for geocaching, but it all depends on the the apps you have.

The groundspeak geocaching app for the iPhone works really well.

Does anyone know of a similar app for a Droid? I've never geo cached before but I never had a decent GPS, either.

I'm old school, my phone is just a phone, my GPS is just a GPS.

I was more interested in hearing about caches people have found that they really enjoyed. Great location, clever hide, whatever. Just something that made the cache stand out.

It can be a lot of fun. It is also a good way to motivate kids and get them hiking.

One of the other benefits to geocaching is, other than the initial purchase of the GPS enabled device, it's basically free. My son's always look forward to going out to "treasure hunt".

We usually head for the hills but a couple of weeks ago I looked up caches within walking/biking distance from our house.
It got me off my fat butt and outside for an afternoon any way.

Yep. That is a good one. Better do it before there is too much snow. I think the top was over 7100 feet.

For those interested here's mine: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache...1-acbee4790a54

Only 3 people have made it to the cache this year (and only 2 the year before). 4wd is required to get to it unless you want to hike the last couple miles.

I just may have to take my kids up there and replace the contents with a bunch of Littlest Pet Shop figures.

Now that my kids are getting a little older I need to go do some Geocaching. It's been awhile.

Back in the early days of Reno4X4 I led one* of the first trail runs. It was a geocaching run from Lockwood to VC. It was a fun day with maybe four or five rigs, a much bigger turn out than I expected.

*It might actually have been the first Reno4X4 run, I don't recall exactly.
