    1965 vw bug engine advice

I just picked up a '65 vw with a 1500CC engine and found out that it is grenading. I was just curious what my best option would be. Should I keep driving it till it explodes or park it and wait till I get money to fix it?

If you explode it while driving ,you could destroy other parts the are reusable for you rebuild, costing you more money

Its only about $450 for a rebuild kit, as long as you dont have to have any machining done to the case. If you let it die a horrific death you could damage the case, as well as the crank and end up costing much more.

'65=no smog. I suggest a 500 cid Caddy and transaxle swap.

There's a couple vw places in town; Scudders on Victorian and Pyramid, Fibercraft on Glendale east of Kietzke, that place inside the curve of the 395 n to 80 e interchange, and the guy on Sun Valley at 7th.. Sorry about the last 2. I don't remember the names. I had a 1500 and swing axle trans around. I'll see if I can find them.

X100 Leave it alone untill you can afford to rebuild the engine. Mess around with all the little stuff to keep you busy for now.

I'd bet that by "grenading" it means the main bearings are going out. If that's the case, then don't even start it, pull the engine and see if you have play on the flywheel(just grab it and see if it moves up and down or side to side), if it does, you might be able to line bore the case and put in larger bearings, if the damage is too severe, you're gonna need a new case. While have it apart, you are going to want to check the threads for the head bolts and heli-coil if need(also called case savers).

FYI: the 1500 and the 1600 use the same case and crank, the 1600 just uses larger "jugs"(i.e.cylinders) and they are interchangeable.

I've rebuilt these things on the side of the highway out in the middle of nowhere, I know the older VW's like nobody's business, if you need help or advice, just ask.

Oh yeah, if it takes more than 20 minutes to pull the engine, you're doing it wrong.

sometimes on vw motors the top ends can sound like a coffee can full of marbles, if the valves are not adjusted right. so it might not be as bad as you think.
call the guys at J's vw vans 323-4943. they are at 545 depaoli st. down of 4th street. they can fix you up.

LOL, so true. Have you seen the competitions they have at VW swap meets (and other places)??? "Who can swap a type 1 engine the fastest"! The fastest I've seen personally was about five minutes with 2 guys. That's drive it in, pull the motor, put it back in, and drive away.

Totally agree with you and this is exactly where I would start if it is making "noise". Normally sounds way worse than it is.

So true! It is super easy to adjust and check them if you have a screwdriver, a13 mm wrench, and a feeler gauge. I just built a 2 litre for mine last winter, still running great. Lots o fun! Hit me up if you need some help.

main bearings are shot! i can grab the crank pulley and move it front words and back, it sounds like hell too. also have no power whatsoever. this thing is toast. I took it to a vw shop here in corvallis and they said the same thing: main bearings done.
