    Red face

Hi all. My name is Gary D. but most people call me ZIP cuz my business name is ZIPGRAVER but that's a another story...and I ain't very zippy. I was referred to this site... and I think I'm going to enjoy it... by Tony at Totally Off Road in Reno. I'm an old phardt, 62, here in Fernley from MI for almost two years and I drive a F-150 4X4 Off Road but it is my main vehicle and not even paid off yet. While I enjoy going off through the desert and maybe just sight seeing or shooting I don't especially like the Nevada pin striping done to my truck. I am not a rock climber and don't like banging around all that much but I was considering a side by side UTV??? so my wife and I could take off o'r the salt but then I decided why pay $10,000 for a vehicle I can only drive off the road when I could get a Jeep and even use it for driving around the great metropolis of Fernley...and of course Reno and other parts.

I do have my heart set on a Jeep Wrangler so I will be looking here... and there... for any that might fit my budget....soon.

I would appreciate any info or input any of your more knowledgeable Jeep nuts can send my way like what to look for and what to avoid. I won't be going after any gigantically tired ORV monsters that we'd need a ladder to climb into. Just maybe one with a little bit bigger tires and slightly tougher suspension or....???? that we could use to maybe take off on these 40 mile jaunts I see advertised once in a while.

Thanks for your time and I hope this doesn't bother anybody too much.

Welcome to the site! Lots of jeep / toyota / ford / you name it knowledge around here. Don't feed Sierra Valley or put your fingers in Rockape's cage, and you'll be just fine.

    Welcome again

    How I found ya

Linked over from SamCo's website. Met Sam last summer while I was doing some training @ Tier1 w/ Sam and Josh.

Thought I'd meet the wheeling community before I move out there next summer.

    how i found reno 4x4

my first experience with reno4x4 was at So. reno napa, i was walking out of the store to my truck and found 2 guys taking pics of my old ford. we laughed at my truck a little (it was very ugly and bentup and yes it had 12" blocks on the back) the guy said he was going to post the picks on "reno4x4". after that i had forgotten about it and some time later i got a jeep xj and happened on a book in summit it was all about jeep xjs and i noted the reno4x4 stickers on the jeeps in the book

Welcome! We have alot of stock wheelers here who like to get out and enjoy what NV has to offer so don't worry about what you wheel. Just wheel it! There is also an entire ATV section here should you decide that's what you want as well. For the kind of wheeling you are describing I would try and figure out what the biggest tire you can install on the stock suspension and get a nice set of shocks. Some good on/off road tires are BFG Mud Terrains, or Goodyears MTR tire. There is some debate that Goodyear's side walls are a little thicker. As for shocks I am partial to Billsteins. Some say they ride a little hard but I like the feel they provide. Other than that a good offroad kit which includes extraction hardware, shovel, first aid kit, and a minimum of 5 gallons of water. A winch is always a good idea as well but not essential for what you are describing so long as you go out with at least one other vehicle.

As for pinstriping a good idea is to put layers of wax on the vehicle prior to the season starting. A good wheeling friend of mine polishes and layers 5 coats of wax on his truck every spring religously and I can say for the crazy stuff he does his truck is still nice and shiney after years of hard wheeling abuse.

Take Care and don't be afraid to ask questions. This is why this board is here. Welcome again!!!

Found this site with Yahoo Search after buying my first Toyota. Figured I'd need help with it being at 222K miles and wanting to make it more trail worthy. Getting lots of lafffs here and some good info. Would like to have someone or maybe a few post up good sites for older toyota parts websites. My budget is slow and I might be interested in some used off road parts ( bumpers, bull bars, winches, rims ). Also found a new fishing spot ( I think it was Kairo ) Thanks and me and my stock Toyota are looking.

Like I posted in another thread I was searching for a trail map of Peavine and had just about given up hope about a local club. I am on JF also but that's because This is my first wheeler and looking forward to possibly getting the wife one and becoming a team. Great to see a bunch of local's that we can bs with even if it is to debate if our bumper is legal or not.
