Toyota 4runner needs more get up and go

This goes out to all the Toyota people out there. My parents offered me their old 4runner for free and I said absolutely I will take it. It is a 1989 3.0 V6 SR5 with 5 speed manual. It accelerates leisurely but once up to speed and running at highways speeds does just fine.....until I reach a hill and then it bogs down. What are some cost efficient ways to boost it's get up and go and performance in general?

    Your advice is greatly appreciated

what tire size? the best thing you could do for performance would be to swap gears in the differentials. As far as 3.0 performance mods ya you wont be gaining anything in that department.

Yep gears or smaller tires, lighter wheels, remove weight from the vehicle.

smash said it best, gearing is about your only option. the 3.0 is a weak motor, just be happy you dont have an auto behind it.

The only way I ever got my 3.0 to give me any power was to wind it up pretty good. I once did 70mph up Donner coming back to Reno, but I was in 3rd gear at 4500rpm the whole way! Got lousy mileage. Whats been said here is pretty much it. You're not going to put headers, turbos or anything else fancy on that motor. Those are quite frankly pretty lousy motors. You'd think for the displacement they'd have more power, but they don't.

I swapped in a Toyota 3.4 into my 91 Toyota truck. What a difference, 70 mph up Donner in 5th gear, and 20 mpg.

It used to be that way but they started following EPA laws. It could possibly work since it was offered in a newer MODEL of the truck, he'd have to get pre-approval first if he wanted to make sure it would pass smog.

Shouldn't be any problem getting a 3.4 approved to replace a 3.slo. I replaced my 1970 225 Buick V-6 with a 1995 4.2 GM Vortec V-6, and never told anyone. Still a GM V-6. New motor ran way clean, and passed smog. End of story. It seems the 3.0 to 3.4 swap could be done in a similar manner.

It currently has 235/75/15 but when those wear out I was going to move up to 31-10.5-15. From what I have read it came with 4:10 gearing. What gearing would be best with 31's?

Shop around a little. There are good machine shops, cheap machine shops and very few good and cheap machine shops.
