What would make you come out to a Rock Crawling event?

Seeing how the rock crawling in general is in decline and the events have few spectators and drivers, what do you think can change to make it more appealing to come out and watch?

maybe a 'tough truck' class -- aka run what ya brung. More bikini car washes. Raffles. Affordable food/drink vendors. As more and more events try to all present the same experience, the uniqueness is becoming diluted. Ho-hum, yawn, another crawling event. Competing events means we have to pick and choose which event to support. Add a short race course to the crawling. the new place soon to open east of reno could offer flat track and a challenge/obstacle course. Oh, and admission prices must be carefully considered not to turn away spectators. Free dry camping included will help. Live entertainment, entertaining MCs, door prizes. Times are really tight and incentives or offering some thing different or out of the box, so to speak may tip the scales to generate more attendance.

But really, rock crawling is dying to give way to ultra 4, sucks! Needs to be more "every man" type of comps and interaction I think to get it fired up again.

Ya like a "stock class" would be cool. Like 37" tires and under, would make it easier for me to relate and get into it

Natural courses and/or a course I can relate to(how or why I would take a line).

Better organization. I could not tell what was happening, going to happen next, and did not know who was where in what class... etc... It reminds me of stopping and watching Soup Bowl or WH3 on Fordyce. Fun while I am there but I would not make it a destination for the day.

More competitors... How to make that happen is another question.

Competitors will come of there are more spectators, spectators will come if there are more competitors. It's a chicken/egg scenario.

On the subject of natural courses, they all require spectators to travel, at times several hours away. Reno Rocks was successful in bringing crowds cause it was right where people already were.

And the whole issue of a clean successful run being good for competitor, but boring to watch, which leads some event organizers to set very hard courses that force spectacular roll-overs, lots of throttle, which turns away competitors that try to keep their cars together for the rest of the season.

Something like we had at the Sands a few years ago. Easy to get to, easy to watch from one spot or move around a little, good announcer telling spectators what was going on. Add bleachers or even better, an overhead viewpoint and shade. Reasonable refreshments is also a plus. Maybe a class for 35'' and under, street legal. Build up the infield at the Mustang course is another good idea.

    X3-4 events a year

    16 events

    20 weekends from June-sept

It's over kill. We all have other stuff to do to enjoy summer then dropping $$ on just spectating.

To take my family for the weekend is easily $100-150 for admission fuel and food. Throw in shirts splurge on food camp it's easy 200-250. Honestly I'd rather drive to the con or fordyce and actually wheel not watch others wheel for less

There's too many events and there all too expensive.

Condense events = condense spectators= more drivers= more profit= less entry fees

    MORE LEFT TURNS!

For me it's a cost issue. It's fun to check out once in a while, but it gets expensive to participate any more than infrequently.

the problem for me is the same as anything else that is happening on a weekend. 99% of the time i have something else better to do then stand around in the sun and watch someone else do something i would like to do.same reason i dont go to drag races, motocross,or mud bogs.

I guess for me it is different, with two friends of mine out there in two different classes and cheering them on to win. I like to support them and when they ask me if I'm coming out, I hate to say no.

Cost too much to compete, courses are set more for spectator enjoyment meaning more broken rigs, and I don't think there is enough competitors to make it worth the drive just to watch. It was a bad thing when the two factions split.

The whole Cal-Neva/cal-rocs split didnt help anyone.... I remember cal-rocs events three years ago in browns valley(not exactly a hardcore venue...) that had 15 cars....just in pro mod!!! Crowds were much bigger...made the events fun from a drivers point of view!!!

Its time for a change if crawling is going to survive..... more excitement. It used to be unbelieveable to see rigs do crazy climbs and make impossible looking stuff....now its not that uncommon...tires,drivers and rigs are light years ahead of what they were 5 years ago...

It seems even the promoters have lost interest in it....when was the last time you saw an advertisement, even on your local board put up by an organization? I remember back in the day when i heard about a werock event at donner on the radio!!! its hard for competitors and specatators to be excited about these events when the promoters are seemingly not.....

Maybe add a different class. We have a club challenge every year and its bad ass. Its 5 rigs run what you brung and the fastest group through the courses wins. So there are people just beating the hell out of their rigs and bashing into their groups rigs. Very exciting and I think would be a great addition to the rock crawling.

I go to one or two per year. I always have a good time, but feel $20 is too much.

I hang out with Jesse Haines once in a while. He's told me about events that only charge $5 per head and had huge crowds. The organizers said it was a wash - they made the same money and it was easier to deal with the smaller crowds. Seems like lower cost and larger crowds would be better for the long term growth of the sport though.

Also they don't seem well publicized. I have to dig to find out when/where the events are.

I understand what you mean, but it's up to promoters to put together a show, price it right, promote it and bring in both. Agreed with pretty much all other comments here. Especially having too many events and costing too much.

I said this in the last thread we had like this, merging the events and pooling resources is the way to survive. How many foot ball, baseball or basketball leagues are there? And how many were there in the 60-70's?

I would also look for sponsors to help cover over head, in hopes to reduce ticket cost.

Couldn't agree more. Seems if they invested in that front page Ad space here, top right on home page, they'd get great exposure. Discounts for members with banners on their windshields?

Cost is a pretty big factor. Sands brought in a bunch and even that little challenge at the nugget brought in a bunch of rigs.

The events are not advertised very well. Unless someone on this site points it out I have no idea they are happening. Natural courses are way better, but again these are even worse for advertisement. The courses at the sands etc don't interest me that much. Just seems to be more of a marketing thing with the casino rather than a race.

For instance I stumbled across a moon rocks event maybe 7 years ago and have wanted to go back since, but I have never found an official event out there since. The unofficial ones are not generally family friendly so we stay away.

sad thing is that the blm isn't very friendly with rockcrawlers. I have tried on several different occasions to get an official run for TRG but they had so many bells and whistles and the cost was also prohibitive. Advertising would help but also raises the cost. The fact that their are three separate sanctions doing basically the same thing hurts more than it helps. Spreads out a limited competitor field. Rockcrawling has been around for a while and has gone thru several periods of expansion as well as shrinkage. Only time will tell. As with all sports economy is a major limiting factor. The courses have gotten pretty extreme and the equipment to be competitive has gotten rather costly.
