My wife and I started to go to Derby Dam after the Vista spot was closed.

Damn - we were there just 3 days ago!! I sure am getting tired of Washoe County lately.

Sheriff Haley has tasked the office to find every house barn outhouse and chicken coup in the county to put a circle around. Just be happy you didn't expect to buy land and have a shooting range on it only to find out the distances required. He has tried to effectively shut down shooting in the county. We still regularly shoot on our property in Pal Val but it's just one complaint from being over. MA had 500' from dwellling not your own and 500' from a road. I lived on a lake so pretty well populated and short of the old No Sunday shooting law it was easier and closer to go.
I see an indoor range in the future for me.

I like to watch Massad Ayoob . His thoughts are well thought out and I like to use his philosophies.. In one video he explains what to do if you have a ccw and are pulled over by a peace officer. I'm sorry if I don't word it right but you don't wanna start your conversation with a cop by saying you have a weapon. He might take it the wrong way and pretty soon be at gun point . Massad says to tell the officer that you have a ccw and that you do have a weapon and you should explain where it is. This will keep the officer on your side and not alarm him that he has a maniac ..... Today I did whati just explained plus told him about the other guns I had in my truck and also explained I was gonna take them out later to practice. I also told him that they were all unloaded . This might not be the best way but it worked for me today.

So you did t get a ticket for shooting you had expired tags and then you were told its not a legal spot anymore correct?

i go to lockwood to shoot, take the road south out of lockwood to the last bridge before the gates on the paved road, either go right past the bridge into the canyon about a 1/2 mile there is a nice valley with good backstops, or go left just before the bridge and park, follow the creek bed in about a 1/4 mile off the roadway and there is a good place there as well. i spoke to a STOREY county sheriff before i went in and asked him where would be a good place to shoot and he told me those places were ok and i wouldnt be bothered but if there was traffic nearby wait till it was clear (basically use common sense)

Congested area must be posted per Washoe County Code 50.154

Starting on page 17 the areas deemed "congested" by the county are listed http://www.washoecounty.us/clerks/fi...Chapter050.pdf and the code incorporates the traditional rules on shooting near dwellings etc.

50.090 Definitions. As used in sections 50.090 to 50.158,
    inclusive:
    1. “Congested area” means that portion of the county so
determined pursuant to sections 50.094 to 50.154, inclusive,
where uncontrolled discharge of firearms would result in the
greatest risk of injury to life and limb.

I am not a map whiz but maybe someone on the forum can check out the link and determine whether Derby has been deemed "congested". I sure did not see a sign last time I was there.

It is not considered congested I stopped and talked to a highway patrol Sargent who was sitting on the derby dam overpass a asked him I'm it wasn't legal to shot there anymore he told me that I was still legal to shoot there and the he also uses it frequently to shoot there plus we were there for like 2 hours yesterday with 11 people and shooting full auto stuff. And not to mention there was like 15 other people out there shooting at the same time.

Thanks for all the info. I fear we are heading to a state in which you have to own private land or frequent a designated shooting range. I know they have all but zipped up southern Nevada. My Father and law works for Federal Parks at Lake Mead and started a program to draw up maps that will show where shooting is allowed in Clark County. Only issue down there is you can't off-road anywhere in the valley because the loons that moved in from other states and complained about dust. So BLM closed the trails all over the valley. First they start by closing the trails to motorized vehicles then they close the county for shooting (unless at a designated range). I think we should fight and keep Northern Nevada open for motorized vehicles and safe shooting.

    Couple rules I live by
    1. CLEAN UP YOUR TRASH...................hippies love to complain about all the garbage left behind by shooters. It's great fun to shoot up an old washer..........but one hippie on a Mt. bike complaing about your leftovers to all their friends is dangerous. A mob can change rule.
    2. Don't shoot across Mt. Bike/hiking trails or even around them
    3. Avoid areas where you know hikers, dirt bikes, and Mt. bike riders frequent.

Now that I am off my soap box I'm goanna go grab a breakfast sandwich. What I am trying to say here is the following. I love the freedom of this great State I was born in. I love shooting, off-roading, MX cross................and everything that makes this place fun. I want my son to share these experiences. The way we live should be the norm not the exception but I fear attitudes are shifting. I don't want to end up like Clark County.

Don't take this as a rant or someone looking for a fight...............just trying to give some perspective on the bigger picture that sadly was learned in Clark County. Sounds like our local Sherriff may need to be voted out of office.

With all the closure of shooting areas, i decided to email my local elected official, past experience has shown me that it barely does any good. I will keep doing it anyway.

If you are so inclined, find yours here > http://www.washoecounty.us/bcc

    My recent email

What can you do to re-open the closed shooting areas in the county?

What are you doing to make sure we can practice our 2nd amendment freedoms with out restriction?

It isn't just shooting area's they're closing. They are closing public lands. It doesn't matter if you shoot there, camp there, ride motorcycles or hike. Keep public lands open to the public. Look at what's going on at the Rubicon. Trails have been closed for YEARS and they're just now getting SOME reopened.

As much as we would like to think otherwise this issue can be pretty complicated. Not always something that can be answered with a quick email.

Maybe they aren't as informed as they should be and need more info from you

I thought I saw in another thread where the "Derby Dam shooting area" is partially too close to the hwy, and the rest is private property where the owner doesn't want shooting. Along those same lines, the whole area between Lockwood and VC is ALL private property except for Largomesino itself.

I am not one who goes out shooting all the time and have only read this thread for the first time. Don't hate on me for commenting!

My point being that many think this is all "Public Lands" which it is not. This is probably also the case in Derby area.
