    Registering my ATVs

I am going through the process of registering my ATVs and I thought it would be good to have an information thread on what people are experiencing with the registration process.

I have a few ATVs I purchased out of state. One has a Nevada title.

I took the first one down to get the vin inspection today.

I checked the nvohv website and didn't see where there is a cost. I am going to check with nvohv to see if this is legit but I passed. I verified that there is no limit that the dealers can charge. there are only limits on the submission of paperwork on your behalf.

Here is what the dealers charge. (Even on new purchases. Another reason to never buy from "most" reno dealers) 2-12-2013
Reno Honda = $15 (no Notary)
    Michaels = $20 (no Notary)
Reno Kawasaki = $21.75 (no Notary)
Reno Cycles and gear = $0 ($10 for Notary if needed)
Reno KTM = $12 (No Notary)

    Sherrif's Office 328-3001
If you are in the county like me the Sherrif's Office was helpful and I may go this route with the other bikes.

I ended up calling the sheriff's office to get the vin inspection on the remaining ATVs. They don't make appointments but will show up when they are free and in the area. You can specify a general time when you will be home. I missed them the first night but they called again the second night and took care of my vins.

I have heard Reno and Sparks metro will not bother to help you.
EDIT: I have also gotten reports on good service from Sparks Metro. I assume it is the same process as the sheriff's office.

NVOHV told me that a ranger or a fireman can verify the vin. Anybody with a badge basically.

I took the bike to Reno Cycles and Gear and they inspected it for no charge. As always they were great to work with and very helpful. If you need a notary they charge $10 but I have access to a free one so I declined. It took about 5 minutes for the inspection.

The law says dealerships are allowed to charge $2 if they submit your paper work and $2 to submit for a title.

Tomorrow I am going to mail in my title and registration submission. The Nevada title is not in my name but is signed off so I will see how it comes out to transfer it over.

You have to write one check to DMV for the title and another check for the registration. They cannot be combined or they will send it back because it is two different departments.

I will post up my experience and let people know if I run into any obstacles. Post any information on your experience.

I haven't done it yet, but my neighbors just called the Churchill County Sheriff's office, and they sent a deputy out to run the VIN and do whatever needed to be done. Doubtful they charged anything.

It does say in rual areas law enforcement can verify the vin. I have heard that in Reno and sparks they wont do it.

Ok there one catch to this my bike has no vins none on the motor or frame. I saw a catch in the rules about this. I have owned this bike for 8 years. Is any of these places doing new vins?

I've been holding out on this. The sticker is huge and the only place it will fit on a bike is the top of the seat or outside of the rear tire.
A bunch of people have been writing the reps about it http://www.leg.state.nv.us/Assembly/ and I was told Wednesday that there may be some changes on the way.

Well what I was told was they will get you during transportation. If you go to sand mountain its required after June.

I don't want to sidetrack Dan's thread too much but that doesn't make much sense to me. I can transport unregistered vehicles all day long on a trailer on public roads. I don't think they can get you for having a quad in the back of your truck without a sticker. At least I can't imagine how that can be "illegal". I don't ride at those types of places anyway so I think it's more feasible for me perhaps. I'm rollin' they're hatin'.

Bought my 05 Honda Rubicon in Oregon fwiw and boy am I glad now.

Sorry Dan, back to actually registering your quads and how to do that!

Yeah I didn't want to sidetrack either.
I have no problem registering my bikes. But the sticker needs to be a sensible size (2"x3") and able to be placed in a location where it can be protected, like the upper left fork tube. Or somewhere around the handlebars, faring, control area on OHV. It's blasphemy, but Kalifornia actually got that part right. If they want billboards on bikes, why not just give us pre-prints for all 3 plates.
I'm just waiting to see if some changes might be made. Appreciate the feedback about the shops.

DMV has to assign a vin to it. This is the one time dmv will do anything in this process.

DMV has to assign a vin to it. This is the one time dmv will do anything in this process.

This is from the VIN inspection form.

"If the OHV does not have a vehicle identification number or the VIN has been removed or is illegible, indicate by checking the box that states “A VIN was not found, has been removed or is illegible.” Complete the remainder of the form and give the form to the customer. The customer must take the OHV and the completed form to a DMV inspection station. Even if no VIN is found, this form must be completed by an OHV dealer or member of law enforcement and given to the customer."

This is bad news. I have yet to see one of the stickers, but they should be no larger than the Cali stickers. Where the hell do they expect us to stick a bilboard on our machines?

Yes the sticker is ridonkulous. I'm guessing 4x6? And orange to boot!
I went to Reno cycles, sent my paperwork in and in 2 weeks, recieved this giant sticker. No issues. I don't really like putting my cc number through the mail though!

4x6 really? Damn I have been holding off on doing this so far because I heard the stickers were overly big. Any chance you can post a picture of the sticker?

If they are going to make it that big why not just give us a license plate, That looks bigger than a motorcycle plate1

No they aren't allowing them like AZ yet. This is only for offroad only and has to be be done unfortunately

Is this a one time registration fee or is it annual?

As I ask this question the hair begins to raise on the back of my kneck because I know the answer is "of course annually with a fee ofcourse".

The answer is bend over. Yeah I'm a little confused as well on how the state can enforce this on what is apparently federal lands... but they are I guess. I will be opting out myself, for as long as I can anyway.
