    Jeep caught fire...

I pulled in true valley here in Fernley to get some bolts and someone came in saying there was a green jeep smoking a lot......and by the time I got there the back half was in flames. Luckily a guy from the store put it out before it was a total lose. I have replace the gas tanks and all the lines, seatbelt, rear tailight and wiring....Anyone ever had something like this happen or have any ideas as to why????

I had a '92 YJ back in '98 or so...the fuel tank vent line(?) plugged and it caused a backpressure of sorts...i started oozing fuel and i could see where it could have got on the tailpipe....should it have been roughted as stock. I had mine turned down right at the muffler...
The shop i took it to, said it was common, couldn't tell you fore sure. I wasn't too into jeeps and hadn't really learned all that much at that point so i didn't pay too much attention as to what was wrong. however I did agree that it was coming from the area above the fuel tank, although looking back, i would have bet it was a old or torn fuel line from the fuel pump, because it only happened while it was running....

best of luck.... i have some tail lights from a 84 cj if you want them...to atleast get you back on the road....

after seeing the pictures, could have been a poorly installed bodylift...with the 3" ones, don't you have to extend the fuel lines or filler neck, something???

I was thinking something went wrong with the body lift??? I dont like them or used them. So I guess I'll just ordere a new tank and redo the wiring and fuel lines.

    That sucks.

Hey I have an 85 Ramcharger that is just a parts truck if you want the wiring to splice and make your own. I am down in stagecoach.

Cant help with much else but ill sit there and drink your beer and talk to you while you work on it!

Where did you buy that again I would be looking at legal action if I could, the car lot should be held liable.

After doing some csi investigative work I see that the previious person did not lentghen the fuel filler lines and managed to stretch the taillight wiring too much that it rubbed on the body causing it to short and get hot, in turn melting the return fuel line and causing the big fire....thats why i hate body lifts!!!! Its gonna get kicked to the curb and a soa is on its way!!!

Dude I would check your steering also, my damn steering shaft came out of the bell coupler and I lost my steering completely. Luckily it was as I was pulling into my driveway We cut mine in half and lengthened it about an inch.

will you ever use your back seat? if not, get a fuel cell and stick it in the back.
