    Alyssa's '65 CJ5 Navy Jeep

Well we/Alyssa just bought a 1965 CJ5 Navy Jeep. PO put new springs on and shackles but it is a clean Jeep and we are going to fix her up as a DDriver.

4 Cyl, 4:27 Gears, new head job/valve job done and the window opens out. I think it was used on the flight line side of the Navy.

Now we just have to tow it home and go through it.

Good find Jim...Good luck with the restoration. I notice the hood has a cutout for a snorkel, was there once one on there or is the hood been changed?

He didn't have one but it is the original everything. The front fenders were cracked and he took it to a body shop to fix it.

I can add a snorkel like my CJ8

    New Old Stock snorkle:

Ok, looking at the brake lights-well, they don't work.

Headlights work, rear running lights work when headlights are on, BUT, the front parking lights do not come on when the headlights are on. They do come on when the light switch is at the parking light position.

Also, this Jeep does not have a turn signal lever to on the column.

Does anyone have any idea on the brake lights/is there a switch that is supposed to be engaged when the pedal is depressed?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Jim, been sometime since I worked on that vintage Jeep but I think there is a brake pressure/light switch in the brake line. Most likely under the drivers feet. Round with two terminals (I think).

That is correct. You should find the pressure switch on the drivers side just after the master cylinder down near the frame.

    Cool Jeep!!

We are going to remove the single bore MC and install a two bore MC for her safety.

W/the original one, if she looses one line, she looses everything.

I found a guy who sells a retro kit for 120 bucks-now I just have to remember his web site. He sells over drives for these 4 bangers as well.

My 66 had the pressure switch on the end of the master cyl. Border parts will have anything you need if he is still in busness John is located in the San Diego aera and has a amazing inventory and knowlege of drivetrain parts and anything off road but if it's chrome don't ask him for it He does't do chrome anything.
1-800-533-0171 or on your dime 1-619-461-0072.
I was in need of a cluster gear for my t-86 and I found it for alot of $$$ But John hooked me up with a whole T-90 set up for the same cost as the cluster gear for the T-86 what a GREAT GUY. FYI be kind to the wiper motors you can't find orig parts to fix them you will haft to replace the wholething with aftermarket.
I replaced my headlight switch with the orignal OEM from John I was amazed that he had it but he did.

    Thank you Allen.

One wiper works so far (tested by a hand vacuum pump), now I need to figure out how to hook them up.'

I have to figure out what Tranny/T-case she has in it. I think I have a T-90 in one of the '48's I have/spare.

As for the headlight switch, I have all running lights when pulled all the way out except for the two front ones on the grill. When push the switch in half way then all the parking lights work. Not sure if that's the way it supposed to be ???

Alyssa is ordering a two compartment M-Cylinder- http://hermtheoverdriveguy.com/?page_id=828 to replace the OEM single compartment type.

Thanks for the info as well,
    Jim

    Jim,

63 CJ has a electrical hook up off the master cylinder in line with the proportioning valve. (Sorry cant thinkmofnthe proper nomenclature) for the break light hook up. It is simply a neg and pos connection

at least this is all that is on my 63

Does anyone have a turn signal box on their column?

Seeing this was a Navy Jeep, not sure it came w/one ot one can be hooked into the wiring system.

If not, arm signals but 9 x out of 10, people don't know them anymore.

    Thanks,

Ok, I fixed the sticking gas pedal. Had to slide in the pedals linkage toward the carb.

Question, how I. The world do you guys fill the tranny/Tcase ?

Looking at it, it is very tight. I guess a pump or hose, but man there is limited room unless one takes off the inspection plate.

Those two wires coming out of the end is your brake light switch. The vacuum wiper motors look like the same ones on my Scout and I might have a spare. I've found NAPA here in Sparks is pretty good on a lot of the misc. small parts.

    Thanks Bill.

I filled the T-case=empty. Now Peach is going to the store to pick up some more for the tranny.

Just going through and filling up everything. But how do you fill the steering box? is 80w90 ok or just straight 80 weight gar oil?

If I can figure out how to hook up the wipers then I can check the drivers side wiper.

Thanks Bill/everyone.- be on the road soon-ordering the MC probably tomorrow.

When you order the MC, make sure it comes with (or also get) a brake light switch !

Wow the pics bring back some memories. Bill is correct on the brake light switch it is very vunerable to plant life pulling the wires off and shorting them out. The T-case is a Dana 18.
I used a mixture of 50/50 90 wt gear oil and bearing grease for the box and steering knuckels they don't seal very welI. I would look and make sure they have oil as well. I used a small hand pump for the gear oil. you should fill the T case first then the transmission. Make sure you grease anything that has a zert. When the bellcrank starts to get loose things get all kinds of fun keeping that thing on the road.
Keep an eye on the cluch cable where it attaches to the arm that rides on the throw out bearing the neak is weak and will fail when you get halfway out of 1st gear, I went through 2 cluster gears that way. I am going to guess that this thing is going to leak very badly from anything that holds lube I used a DOT switch from Napa you will need a flasher with that. when you wire it in do yourself a favor and wire it with a plug up front so you can tow it. It looks like it has a setup on the front bumper for a hitch.
