    Jackson Meadows near Sierraville

    Is anyone familiar with this area as far as good camping is concerned? I've done some research and it looks like the only camping in the area is in established campgrounds. I'm not a big fan of campgrounds. Does anyone know if there are any good "boondocking" places to go out there?
    I only drink a little, but when I do, I turn into another person, and that person drinks a lot.

    There are some nice spots on Little Truckee just south of Jackson Meadows Rd. keep scoping out roads going left after you turn off 89.
    I'm in, Let's go!

    if you continue over the spillway the road turns to dirt then follows the west shore of the lake to the southern end, there are a couple of camping areas but i prefer to go past to catfish lake and camp there or you could go out to lake faucherie(sp) there are some camp sites along the creek or there is camping right by the lake.
    google maps it and check it out
    (edited because its been a while since ive been out there!)

    Agreed. I was just up there camping past Milton on the Middle fork of the Yuba last month. Only problem was no campfires at the time because we weren't in a campground, but nice area. Take skeeter spray.

    Thanks to Mark Milton Res is one of my favorite spots to camp, but we want something new for this weekend. The spots by the Little Truckee: are they actual campgrounds, dispersed, near the water, legal?

    The family and are are winging it this weekend and want somewhere close to Reno. Was thinking about trying Catfish Lake as well. Again, not a huge fan of established campgrounds. We prefer to camp in the wilderness...alone, or as much as you can be.

    I guess my point is, I don't want to set up camp somewhere and be told to leave by a ranger. I know dispersed camping is okay on BLM but this is CDF I think. Any help is appreciated, and thanks for all of the help so far.

    And if you prefer to PM me that would be great. We are respectful when we camp and leave the trail and camp better than how we found it.

    Here are 2 spots in the area I mentioned, they get taken pretty early:

    N 39' 29.025". W 120' 22.989"
    N 39' 28.064' W 120' 23.224"

    Are you jeep camping? If so check out White Rock Lake

    LD, did you find a place? This one is on a ledge that is maybe 25' right above a small lake (Echo Lake):

    N 40' 25.794'. w 121' 09.697"

    There are several camp sites at lake level on the other side of the lake:

    N40' 25.943' W121' 09.889"

    You will have plenty of company here and none up on the ledge.

    If everything is taken this one is very near by:

    N40' 26.255". W 121' 09.525"

    Note, I know it is unconventional but:

    ' = degrees
    " = minutes

    Enjoy!
    I'm in, Let's go!

    Dispersed camping is generally legal in all national forests and the BLM. Buddy and I really like some of the dispersed sites off of Heness Pass Road near Boca/Stampede, and we have goals of finding nicer, more secluded spots in more areas with water. Only thing that sucks about a lot of those tiny lakes up near Jackson Meadows/Independence Lake is that they are privately owned. Generally the lakes themselves are well marked if they are owned and what is permitted. Independence Lake used to be one of my favorites before the power company decided to make it a day use lake only.

    White Rock Lake is very beautiful and remote. Catfish is really nice spot as well. Try Lake of the Woods another cool spot off to the right before webber lake.

    Normally Crater lake is cool. This year, water is very low and probably not recommended.

    You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the input. This kind of stuff is why I love this site. If any of you are out and about this weekend and happen upon my tan Jeep and silver pop-up, stop by for a beer and some shots.
