    1976 Cherokee W/T

    Hello All!
I recently purchased this great truck and will be working on her over the winter. 1976 Cherokee S W/T with 360 V8 and TH400 transmission. Has Quadra-trac with the low-range selector option. I will be doing some basic upgrades and getting her reliable to do trail runs and such. Here's what I started with:

And then I put on some Pro-Comp wheels and BF Goodrich 30/9.5s

Pulled the old distributor and found it was shredded. No wonder it wouldn't start...

That's all for now, going to be putting a CRT Performance ignition in and then hopefully she'll be up and running again. Future plans are for beefier bumpers and some interior work.

Got her back together last week and have been driving it around town, making sure everything is in order. So far so good! Need to do the final timing and adjust the carb a little bit but so far she's been tons better with the new ignition. Much easier to start, warms up quickly, plenty of power. Still has a big lag when you stab the throttle, but I am thinking that may have more to do with leaky or worn vacuum parts and a dirty carb. Also put on a Rugged Ridge air cleaner which looks nice and has a much higher flow filter in it. (Similar to K&N but synthetic fibers).

Did you change the cam gear that matches the distributor gear?

Cam gear was in really great shape so it stayed. The distributor gear is made to wear much more easily than the cam gear and I suspect that when the engine was rebuilt they put a new cam gear on but for some reason used the same distributor set. There were a few other interesting things under the hood that pointed me in the direction of less than stellar service from a previous owner. Oh well, at least each part can only break once right?

Been a long time since I updated here. Lift springs, TBI conversion, blew the 360, swapped in a nice 401, and now some nice tires. Hankook Dynapro ATMs in 33x12.50.

I'll put some pics up from Sunday's run, was a good test for how everything is working. Definitely need to work on the exhaust, it is now very leaky and garbage. Also need to address the oil leak from the timing cover. Also need to look at a bigger transmission cooler. Already have a larger one coming with 25% more cooling area to help that issue out. Everything worked great, though I did learn that the T-case doesn't like to lock into 4x4 unless the hubs are unlocked which is annoying, but not unexpected for a 40-year old system. Pics!

Thanks! It's a labor of love and occasionally wanting to flip it over and light it on fire.

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated. Since February I've replaced the steering shock, added a trans. temp sensor, and repaired the Quadra-Trac. We went to Ouray, CO and back for a Full Size Jeep Invasion, and we've been driving all over the place. Pics!

Top of Jumbo Grade with the Sierra Nevada FSJ group. QT wasn't shifting to lock 4x4 so this was a 2wd adventure for me. Fortunately no problems.

Gold Lake trail with the Sierra Nevada FSJ group. Typical FSJ meeting with the hoods up at the trailhead...

Start of the road to Animas Forks Ghost Town near Silverton, CO. 11,160 feet. That's elevation. Jeep did great for the most part.

Group Photo for the Ouray FSJ Invasion. Wagoneers, SJ Cherokees, and J-trucks as far as the eye can see!!!!!!

We were starting a trail and we came upon this poor Wagoneer with its hood up. Naturally we didn't want it to feel bad, so we all lined up and opened our hoods too...

Red Mountain Mining District. 11,600 feet. Did I mention the elevation?

I believe this was the Princess mine, one of about 8 that operated from 1870s until 1930s.

Transmission temp gauge. Transmission needs more cooling, who knew? (Me, I did, but I haven't done a thing about it...sorry Susan)

    Headed back into Spanish Springs.

Headed out to Eldorado Canyon today with another FSJ-er for a fun and uneventful run through the trees, rocks, water, and dirt. Great day! Stock FSJ made it through without damage and I didn't rip the antennas off!

Wow, I should really come back to this forum more than once every 2 years...

Still have Susan, new FiTech system with in tank pump, rebuilt transmission, new transmission cooler, some more stickers, and she's basically a reliable Jeep!
