    Spot or Delorme satellite tracker/communicators

Looking at getting one of these so I can have another option to get help in case of a break down be it me or the bike. Who's using what? What do you like/ dislike about it the unit? How has the service coverage/battery life been? Would you buy the same unit again?

I have the Spot tracking system. I got it without researching or knowing about the other systems first. One thing I don't like about it is that messages are all sent via e-mail. If somebody doesn't check their e-mail regularly they won't get your call for assistance. I think some of the other systems will send a text instead. Other than that, coverage and everything is good.

I just got a Spot 3. It can be set up to send text messages.

I think that the most significant difference is that Delorme allows you to compose and send custom messages to any contact on your phone (uses Bluetooth). Both use satellites thus have similar "reception" qualities. Both have tracking. Both can alert S&R. Another Delorme advantage is you get an account to download and use Delorme Topo maps on your computer, tablet or phone. If the device does not have built in GPS then you can use the Delorme GPS over the Bluetooth interface. $10 per month buys 10 messages, no tracking (I think tracking is $25).

I've been looking at these options too. One thing that looks like is getting cheaper is SAT phones so that may be an option as well. I'll try and find the links I've been saving

I picked up a Spot gen3 last month, so far I like having it with me for a bit of security and tracking my trip with the waypoints. One thing I wish is that you could manually drop pins rather than just have it send tracking pins automatically over time intervals.

I use alll DeLorme for regular GPS and tracking. Their Topo 10 package works better than anything else I have found.

You guys with the DeLorme do you have to have a cellphone to be able to send messages? I like the spot 3 but want to be able to send custom messages since I'm pretty mechanical. The Spot Bluetooth one worries me since it appears you need a phone to work it, if it had an emergency and non emergency help that might sway me a bit

That is pretty much what I've found as well. Good security, but wish it was more user controlled.

Top of the line model allows you to compose custom messages without a Bluetooth computer/tablet/phone. Other models require Bluetooth device to compose custom messages. Without the Bluetooth device It works just like Spot, allowing up to 3 predefined messages along with a predefined S&R message.

I have the Inreach and used it for the last two Baja 1000's. It works exactly as advertised. Im not crazy about the 10 minute pin drop interval (to few for racing) but you can drop one manually any time by sending a text. Pairing it with a smart devise is the only way to go If you want to send and receive text messages. They also have a policy that allows you to start and stop service for any 30 day period.

Biggest reason I wanted to stay away from needing a smartphone is they just aren't built for abuse. Go down on a bike and it'd be my luck the phone would go poof into a million pieces but the gps device might be alright, they all seem to be built a little stronger

what did you end up with? I'm looking at the same 2 units, I'll be doing some solo hunting this year, decided I should have something like this just in case. I like the spot due to simplicity and cost, the delorme unit has a couple other nice features like ability to send custom messages, but i'm thinking i don't need to be texting people while i'm looking for critters. Reviews seem to be about the same for either unit.

IMHO custom text messaging is HUGE. InReach is about $10 per month without tracking and includes 10 messages. I find this much more useful than tracking.

Also, InReach includes Earthmate with access to topo maps and waterway charts. I run Earthmate on my tablet with maps for the area downloaded on the tablet.

I went with the inreach. I couldn't be happier its worked flawlessly for me. I like the piece of mind that I can get a message out for parts if I broke down. I've gone out alone and tell a friend how to track me with it too and they've followed me along no problem

I would be interested in borrowing it for a few days to play with if you're ok with that. How old is it? Just curious if it's the same as the current model.

Just saw your thread. I have the Spot (Globalstar) Sat Phone. Got it new for free on their promo offer last year (paid $500 then got $500 back when I signed up for service). It is really disappointing. I got it for Nevada and Wyoming Jeep and snowmobile trips. 90% of the time I have "looking for service".... in the middle of the desert or even on a mountain top. I've been working in Idaho and I get service less than 10% of the time in the mountain passes (top of the pass with clear view of the sky). I always keep it with me, but the folks in the ads that say it saves their lives are either paid big $$$ to lie or are high - I would never rely on it. I'd like to try Iridium (lower earth orbiting sat.s) but the cost is too high.

I also have the inreach and like it. The thing gets satellites quick, is easy to use, and not that expensive.
