    OGG: We're all set to recover the XJ tomorrow morning. We'll stage on the street around 7am as the parking restrictions ended May 1. Over the berm at 8. Mike/JJ if you're up for it we could use one more big tire snow rig. Trail is nicely packed but half a dozen trees are down since last last Saturday and more are popping out of the snow. AZ Creek crossing was 24" deep with warm temps and runoff. Thanks, will update tomorrow night when we're out, hopefully w good news.

    OGG Update: the saga continues...
    We were unable to recover the XJ today. We had a crew of four very capable rigs however snow conditions with the warm temps this week and the rain and snow today were absolutely BRUTAL. No one made it to the first tank trap let alone the Buck Lake run off. The snow on the trail was like wheeling on mashed potatoes...served on a greased cookie sheet...impossible. Not that it mattered, Nick and I rode ahead on our quads, Nick (my new hero!) piggy backed my good friend Bill Fisher, FHP Automotive in Tahoe City, on the back of his Bill worked his typical magic, cut the exhaust at the front axle, bypassed a bunch of relays and with the help of Nick and a can of starter fluid got the engine to fire and run for a minute or so. Unfortunately, the fuel line is comprimised somehow and isn't pumping enough fuel to allow the old girl to run on its own. Bummer. Very difficult to fully diagnose all the issues so next step will be to pull that rig out its hole to get it under its own power. It's not possible to drag it behind any snow rig no matter how capable under current conditions. Today was a wet, cold, miserable day on the trail but it was fun, full of laughs, no one got hurt, we didn't break anything and everyone got home safe and sound. It was great meeting a new group of hard core wheelers, Chris (YJ) brought his wife and stepson Ty (stud!), Mike (TJ), Greg (YJ), and Scott in his diesel powered Toyota (my personal favorite). Bill's significant other Dani hoofed much of the trail and has a bunch of photos for the guys, we'll figure out a way she can get those to you. Thanks to the crew and thanks again for all the support out there.

    OGG Update: The first rig is out of the hole! Nick and I rode our quads out to the XJ yesterday afternoon with Nick's friend Gregg riding "bitch" on the back of Nick's quad. Over the hump on "hump day". Trail conditions were treacherous with slippery side hills, snow bridges deteriorating, more down trees and others popping out out of the snow. We hit the trail around 3:30 and made the rig around 5. Nick and Gregg installed an auxiliary fuel pump and line with bits and pieces provided by my friend Bill at FHP. We strapped the pump on the dash and set a 5 gallon fuel tank on the passenger seat primed the pump, and then Nick and Gregg got the old girl fired up. After it was running, to get the XJ off high center we used a farm jack attached to a heavy duty, folding arm base that Gregg's company, Hard Core Trail Gear, invented. Very cool recovery product I had not seen before. The base was set on a charred firewood log, in the snow on top of ice covered rock....in a 12' hole. Don't try that with a standard jack base! We safely lifted the front of the Jeep and put traction boards on top of packed snow under the front tires and set her back down. Gregg set up a come along to a nearby tree to one recovery point and we attached the winch from my quad to another. Nick climbed in the XJ and we slowly crept the Jeep of off high center and up the ramp, moving the traction boards and resetting the come along as we went. Once on all fours, amazingly the tires all had air pressure...in fact too much pressure. About half way up the ramp we turned the quads around and with a recovery strap attched to the front axle and to both quads Gregg climbed in the driver's seat and on the count of three we all hammered down to put the rig on top of the snow! After waking up a few hibernating bears with hoots and hollers we packed up our tools, cleaned up the area and aired down the tires to see how far we could get. We only got the rig about 3/4 of a mile down the trail but it was a huge victory seeing the XJ under its own power. Gregg beautifully piloted the Cherokee with Nick and and a recovery strap proving an occasional bump as we limped along. It was almost dark, the engine was overheating and with some knarly obstacles ahead we parked it in a nice flat spot and headed for home. We got back to the street around 9pm. Gregg braves the foul weather with us on Saturday in his YJ and did quite well, but it was a pleasure working shoulder to shoulder with him for the first time yesterday. Nick was his usual take charge brilliant self. Fun times. More to come.

    There are numerous natural tank traps littered all over the trail, ours is quite obvious with the large berm all around a 100yds of straight trail in front. Highly unlikely

    Not to mention, there a nice ramp down into it now.

    Operation Glacier Girl is back in action tomorrow bright and early. We have 3 rigs confirmed with Scott (YJ), Kenny (JKU) and Mike (TJ) plus I'm waiting to hear back from a few others. Objective is to get my son's rig to the street. If we have enough time/resources we may begin to break trail for the second rig but that would be icing, er....on the cake. Wish us well.

    Phase One of Operation Glacier Girl is in the books! The Cherokee made it to the street yesterday afternoon and I'm happy to report its resting comfortably on solid ground in Tahoe City. Four recovery rigs and two tracked quads went over the berm a little before 8am Saturday. Freezing temps Friday night and into the morning made for ideal conditions as the snow firmed up nicely and stayed that way well past mid day. Scott (YJ), Kenny (JKU), Mike (TJ), Gregg (YJ) plus me and Nick on our quads made good time to the first rig arriving there just before 10. Kenny brought his two young boys who had a ball playing in the big snow. The Fixer Kevin Fenley rode shotgun in Scotts's rig and was star of the day. While the boys were busy plinking and throwing snow and the rest of us swapped stories, Kevin got to work. He performed a quick oil change, topped off fluids and to alleviate our over heating problem he hot wired a push fan and tied that to the grill of the XJ. Less than an hour later he jumped in the driver's seat, fired that baby up and high tailed it for home. Gregg and Mike escorted him out while Scott, Kenny, Nick and I decided to start making tracks for the second rig. It was a slow, hard slog to the "Y", made the left down toward OP and got maybe a quarter mile down the trail if that. Nick scouted ahead and as expected he ran into a down hill section with a 12' side hill and a big drop off into Miller Creek on his left. He took a photo and that was that. We turned around and headed back. I zipped ahead to catch up with the Cherokee while Nick took a detour up the peak south of Miller Lake overlooking Lake Tahoe, setting up a nice radio communication bridge between the Cherokee and our scout team. By the time I reached the Cherokee around 2 pm all three rigs were parked in the staging area with Kevin, Mike and Gregg smiling and relaxing in the afternoon sun. The Cherokee made it all the way out under its own power, cool as a cucumber, needing a tug in only one tough spot. Credit Kevin who really knows how to wheel! I failed to give them enough fuel and when they ran low Kevin and Gregg performed an in-flight refueling using the temporary aux fuel pump to take fuel from Gregg's YJ and transfer it to the can strapped in the passenger seat in the XJ. Scott, Kenny and Nick arrived around 4, we lined up the rigs for a photo then headed down the access road to the street. Kevin literally drove that XJ like he stole it and we made the street in less than 20 minutes Everyone was out by 4:30. Another amazing, fun filled, action packed day on the trail and other than one flopped jeep, one rimmed tire, one boy with a face full of fire suppresant, multiple winch operations out of black hole, tree wells it went pretty darn smooth. No injuries, some minor damage. These guys make big time snow wheeling look easy, which I can tell you it's not. I can't thank them and the others involved over the past four months enough. As far as the second rig we'll let Mother Nature do her thing for a while, I'll likely begin nibbling away at the trail again in a few weeks. I'll update this string when that happens.     OGG Update: We're planning an organized recovery effort for next Saturday, June 3. I plan to be on the trail Wed/Thu/Fri to check trail conditions and hopefully reach the 2nd rig on my quad. I'm curious to know how folks made out this weekend as I understand there's been a lot of traffic up the access road.

    Operation Glacier Girl Pre-runner videos posted on YouTube: For those interested I posted raw, unedited pre-runner video from April 28, the day before our recovery team uncovered the 1st rig. There are 6 segments starting from the access road to Miller Meadow, the last segment you can see where I rode 8' over the top of the Cherokee. Later that afternoon is when I put a shovel on the top of the rig. You can find the videos by searching "Rubicon Trail OGG" on the internet.

    OGG Update: A small platoon of twelve big tire rigs hit the trail early yesterday but unfortunately we were unable to get close to the 2nd rig. The lead group made it 200 yds down past the Y while the second group stopped at the water crossing just past Miller Meadow. Early cloud cover kept the snow nice and tight but at one o'clock it turned soft and got pretty slippery. Gregg did a nice job at the tip of the spear but around 2pm when he slid off a side hill backward into a water hole, and his wife clawed up his right arm like a cat climbing the drapes, that put a damper on everyone's enthusiasm. It was fun up until that point and then it got real The Fixer earned his handle as three rigs limped out with broken axle/hub/u-joint issues. No injuries lots of smiles. Another epic day on the mountain with a great group of wheelers. Trail conditions continue to evolve, melting snow is exposing a ton of down trees both large and small and big trees are still falling on a daily basis. The crew spent a good part of the day manning chainsaws and shoveling ramps and cutting side hills. Rock hard drifts across the trail in the shadows are 10-12' down toward Potato Patch with one in particular I've been told forms in the same spot every year and deserves a name...the snow version of Soup Bowl. We'll give it a whirl in a week or two and will keep you posted. Thanks.
