99 XJ, sputtering and power issue

This has been going on for months now. It sputters when cold and at low throttle intermittently. Other times it's not sputtering but there is noticable lack of power and the engine just sounds like it's trying too hard and something is holding it back. The sound is a subtle difference but I can hear it.

Also, when it sputters I can let of the gas then pump it twice fast and it revs up and it did sputtering. Also sometimes I hear a very quiet pop under the engine, almost like mini back fire.

I've changed plugs and wires. Rotor and cap. All of which were needed.

Then it actually died on me at a stop sign and didn't want to start. It did but reluctantly. It's not throwing any codes so a couple people told me a fuel pump module. Swapped that and replaced the CPS sensor as well as a damaged fuel pump harness.

The problem persists. While everything I've done probably need it anyways if rather not keep throwing money at the problem unless it's cheap things.

    Straight 6 engine.

Thanks for any advice on diagnosing!

Just wondered if you have added a gas dryer to your fuel tank in case it is an accumulation of water in the fuel? This time of year it is more common. Just a thought.

I'll add one tonight when I fill up to see if that helps. This has been going on since July though.

    Thanks for the reply!

How's the condition of the cat? The ceramic still in tact or does it rattle?

I'd think TPS right off the bat from your description.

When mine did it, I thought it was the TPS. Turned out that the cat element had broken free and was plugging the exhaust. Easy and cheap to check, pull the cat, substitute a short piece of exhaust and run it.

That may explain why it's intermittent too. Thanks guys. I'll check the cat then the TPS.

I live somewhere that doesn't need a smog so is there any issue with just taking it out permanently?

IAC (Idle Air Control) can also cause issues like this. You can try cleaning, but if its a 99, I'd just replace it.

Unfortunately your symptoms can be a ton of things. You need a good multi meter, I recommend one that says automotive on it since they have the most common tests right on the dial. Then find a factory service manual either on al forum or pay for one. Then test every single thing looking for problems. My Ramcharger had the same issues you are having. I had to replace the O2 sensor with a factory replacement, the computer didn't like the cheapo one I bought and I had a failing distributor pickup coil.

A sticking EGR valve or solenoid will also cause it to lean out at idle and mess up all sorts of things.

So I think the TPS needs replaced. At full throttle it only pushed out 3.7 volts. The Haynes manual says of it's much less than 4.8 to replace it. I'm replacing that tomorrow. Then I might check the O2 sensors to be certain.

And if that doesn't fix it there are lots of other good ideas here.

    Thanks for all the replies!

I did my TPS twice, the first time with a parts store product, then again with a Mopar one. The Mopar TPS was vastly superior.

Good to know. If this one goes bad again I'll go with a Mopar brand. This one is duralast. I generally shop what I can at AutoZone. I like their point system. Duralast seems to be their main brand that they carry.

Still fighting this. Took it to the dealership and this is what they said.

When it warms up the oil pressure goes down to 13 and below.

Grainy sludge in the radiator. Not positive but looks like engine sealer additive residue.

Ran test and found sma amount of exaust fumes in radiator while running.

    No water in the oil.

They are saying cracked head most likely. Possibly just head gasket.

Does this sound right? If so I have a 0630 casting head. I'm not good enough to do any modifications to make a new head work so I need an exact duplicate. Where would a good reputable place to get one be? Preferably stronger so I don't have to deal with this again? Also. Are all gasket kits the same or is there a better one to get?

Thanks for all the help so far. This is becoming quite the ride! LOL
