NEWS FLASH! Garson Access to HLT Closed

The Firehouse is now private property, there are “No Trespassing” signs and the white gate is padlocked. All other accesses are also private property so even if you “know a way” it could be closed at a moment’s notice.

The Forest Service is working on an access route but this will take time. The primary issue is emergency services, but once a route is established public access will follow.

This info came to us (N4WDA/Hills Angels) as an inquiry from the Washoe County Search and Rescue and verified by myself and the Forest Service OHV Coordinator.

PLEASE, Do not piss everybody off, this is a work in progress.

Once a public access route is available it will be announced.

In for the info. OP says forest service is looking to provide access, and it's clear looking at maps through that wilderness area that HLT has been given special vehicle access to an area we would otherwise be unable to wheel, so I'm in for showing them the responsible folks want to come to the table.

One person is to thank for the fight to keep HLT open to the public, Phil Bender. He convinced the Feds that trail deserved to remain open at a time it was slated to be locked up. It was a pen stroke away from closure. This is why, inter alia, Hills Angels have formally adopted the trail as part of that deal. Yet the fight continues. Many deserved maintenance projests await volunteer action. The Garson side has suffered and as we see continues to face many threats of closure. Please stand with us in this ongoing fight. Your access is at stake.

I think the Reno Land Development Company LLC owns the firehouse and land around it now I think. I know they own a lot of land around HLT to begin with, at least last I checked anyway.

The fire station has been moved and the house is now a private residence, I am guessing a lease. According to Washoe County Assessors office the land is still owned by Boomtown. Other adjacent parcels belong to Santerra LLC and on the back side of that (west) is Quilici Ranch.

There is a road up from Quilici Ranch but it goes through 3 other privately owned parcels, Santerra, Quilici and TMWA. I will be checking with County Public Works to find out the status of that road. If it is a "Documented Right of Way" we should be good for some time, at least till Santerra starts developing.

Exactly, it is a right of way, how do they have the authority to block us out?

According to my last go-around with the County, IF the Garson access is an "Undocumented Right of Way" the land owners have every right to block it. IF it is Documented then closure isn't so easy. Same with the Quilici side, but I can see from Google Earth two facilities and the Boy Scout camp access which SUGGEST the Quilici road may be documented, I just want to verify both roads status with the County.

Yeah I found the road closed signs the other weekend. The gate was dummy locked and I continued on my way. Roads in real bad shape past the gate. I really hope we don't lose access as this would be a huge loss for the off-road community.

    UPDATE - 3/29/17
The Garson Access, according to Washoe County Public Works is a public right-of-way up to the gate and the land owners will soon be legally notified. Keith (Sierra Valley, above) verified that the lock is a dummy lock. He also advises that the road above the Garson gate is in really bad shape and will probably need some serious repair work in the near future.

The alternate access is through the Quilici Ranch Rd (Old Verdi road) - PLEASE USE THIS ACCESS until such time that the County clears-up the Garson issue and the signs come down.

As it stands right now the old firehouse seems to be a private residence but according to the County Assessors Office there is no legal separation of property defined, it's an 86 acre parcel owned by Boomtown. Occupants could be a caretaker or a lease, unknown.

Forest Service has no right-of-way agreement with any of the property owners above the gate.

I know some of this is redundant but just wanted to recap all the details.

EDIT - I just got back from a quick recon of the Quilici Road access. Very narrow, steep, rutted and signed "Private property Road closed ahead". I did not go up in the truck alone, to risky so I did not confirm the closure.

IF anyone wants to go and verify the closure please do so and post up.
