    Need advice on XJ purchase

I've got my eye on this XJ for sale in L.A https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lg...117758312.html
but don't know if it's worth the price... The seller has agreed to $6,800. I haven't seen it in person, but according to the seller repairs needed are a new headliner and the drivers seat is patched with different colors. They have receipts for everything except the motor which was purchased off CL. I'm new to all this and don't know if this is a potentially good deal/option. What are your opinions? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bit of a haul for something that price. Seems like you are going to burn a lot just to go get it. I would recommend looking closer to home.

seems a bit high. just because it has new parts, doesn't warrant higher price, unless that's exactly what you're looking for and were going to upgrade all those parts. in that case, it might be worth paying extra.

My initial thought is that the price seems high, even before you factor in the cost of getting it to Reno.

How many miles are on the chassis? I ask because I am wondering why it needed a new engine, transmission, and front axle. What is going to need to be replaced next?

Don't get me wrong it looks like a nice Jeep, but that is a pretty high price for an XJ that doesn't mention lockers or axle gears or a winch.

What would be some general advice when looking for something? Should I not be as worried about high mileage with no motor or tranny work? And what should I expect to pay? I'm looking for something already somewhat modified.... It doesn't need to be a beast with thousands put into it, but I'd like it to be trail ready and not completely beaten. Also, what should I be asking sellers when I find something I'm interested in? I'll take any and all advice.

Yeah I was going to say - no mention of axle upgrades, so I'd assume they are stock with 3.54 gears, no lockers, etc.

4.5" lift with no long arms or drop brackets will ride pretty harsh too. 33" tires likely rub pretty good when turning or flexing.

Personally, I prefer to find clean, unmodified rigs so I can do the work myself. Then I know it is done right.

I'd look for one with 150k miles or less, and plan to put $1000 or so into it fixing/upgrading little things (just bought a '99 with 153k and this is what it has cost me for things like radiator, exhaust manifold, new hoses/belts, water pump, etc).

I know I've said it on here a dozen times now, but if you pick up an unabused XJ (or YJ or TJ), put a budget 2" lift on and 31" tires, you can explore some amazing areas around here. Save the big/expensive mods for later once you've really figured out what you want to do with it.

    I completely agree with Jed.

Stock and unmolested means you have more work to do but you aren't dealing with someone else's potential problems. I'd rather deal with blown bushings and a leaky transmission than seized control arms, janky welds, and a possibly twisted frame.

Keep looking locally. They're here, just a little hard to find. I paid right around 4k for my Grand and even that was more than I wanted to spend. They're popular here so the market drives the price but be patient, one will turn up.

Didn't stop and check it but there is one in a car lot on Victorian just past the rail city casino. Gold in color... might be worth a look and try and low ball them

I'm not suggesting that the new engine and tranny are bad things, it just makes me wonder why they were replaced. Were they abused? Just wore out? Or did he simply want something better?

Finding a low mileage XJ is virtually impossible so anything is going to be replaced or modified, I would just ask for receipts and if it was done professionally.

Whats with the 4.2L motor? they used that way back in YJ's and maybe the early cherokees. A cherokee that year should be a 4.0L or 4.6L if it has a stroker motor.

Buy it cheap and unmodified. Do the work yourself, so when it breaks on the trail you can fix it. I've learned a lot that way with my XJ (01, had 149k at the time for $1500).

I actually texted this guy... waiting for a response. Would you pay what he is asking for that mileage?

That's a pretty good price, it looks to be a good starting point. '99 is a safe year to avoid all the head issues, but get all the advantages of the late model XJ. It should be a high pinion front, and it looks like a 8.25 rear, add in the SYE and it's a pretty solid drivetrain.

I thought the price was reasonable. Can't hurt to offer him a little less though!
