    Como Peak?

Charlieman and I are thinking of running up to Como Peak out of Dayton on Saturday. I dunno what the road looks like after this winter but last year it was just rough. Very bouncy!
We are taking the buggie and thinking of leaving early like 9. Gotta be down before its way to hot. We plan a to drop the trailer at the trailhead just past the school on old Como road. I dunno what's at the top to look at.
    Any one interested?

Come on all you atv/sxs/4x4 guys. Are you too pretty to ride along or are you scared? Rocks, washouts, desert and dirt. This is the stuff web wheelers are afraid of.

If I wasn't BBQing that night for people I'd think about going. Thats a long road with some pretty cool views along the way. I haven't been up it many years and I remember it being pretty bumpy when we'd go cut xmas trees at the top

Backcountry navigator puts the old town of Como approx five miles from the back of the Dayton School bus yard. The old mill site is a couple hundred yards south west of that. Any further exploration is optional. I would say the road is about as bad as Lousetown rd. lots of little annoying rocks. 2wd and a medium clearance is all that is required unless the road has changed dramatically. Then we can all watch Paul try to winch the buggy out.

USFS didnt label Como as "extremely difficult, rocky", that was reserved for its sister Eldorado canyon which we pass on the way out. Name: eldo_sign.jpg

Ran it a couple years ago on stock Duelers before I got the TKOs and punched some holes. Sock friendly, yeah... but AT tires very recommended.

too much going on this W/E. Last time up there on sough side of canyon below the road we saw some wild apple trees in bloom and the deer were having a feast. Want to try to keep going from the top and drop down to rates/carson riverside. (not sunrise)

When we ran it we started on that side, getting off pavement just south of the Carson near Ft Churchill and headed down through Churchill Narrows, turned up Julian Ln then headed up to Como on this road https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1029.../data=!5m1!1e4
I think it was a combination of routes in that SUV trails book. Nice drive for a long bumpy day. Sometime I want to go back and go clear up to the antennas by Rawe Peak https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1886.../data=!5m1!1e4

Should be a heck of a view up there. Not much left to see at Como itself.

I'm in! 9:00AM somewhere near the trail head. We will be in my F-350 Crew cab. (Big soft tires make for a smoother ride). 146.565 Mhz and SNARS Rose/Virginia peak/Peavine system. KG7DMI
Its just a road with a few rocks, keep driving!

As it turns out, I have a few hours to kill tomorrow morning. See you at the trail head.

I drove to the top of Rawe Peak about seven weeks ago. There was still some mud then, but I'm sure it's all gone now. Shouldn't have any trouble.

Its a green light go for Como.
Basic directions are hyway 50 to Dayton, Turn Right at the stop light (from Carson side its the first one). Go across river and turn Right on Old Como Road. Follow it around till the staging area is on the left. There is the sign that Charlieman post a pic of.
    See ya there!

Whoops, that sign is there but its a ways up. There is a big BLM board type thing there. Cant miss it.

As others have mentioned, this trip is mostly a very rocky road. I wouldn't do it without a spare and I certainly wouldn't expect others to bail my ass out if I did. Sorry, I just have to be honest.

Thanks for all that came out.
Special Thanks to SilverBob for leading us. He was elected leader since he knew where all the rocks are! Thanks to 4x Adventurer as well for bringing up the rear. I hope the Nevada pin-striping on your 350 and SilverBob's rig isn't that bad. Sorry we didn't hang out till you got down. Dried mud and the onset of rain would not have mixed well.

It is confirmed that the first section of the road is very rocky. We went to the millsite and checked it out a bit. Those old miners really wanted the gold out of the ground. Then after a short mud bath we headed to the peak. Great views and a not so terrible road. After a break, we went to the stone house (mine?) and checked that out. I guess if your going to build a house-cabin-room with window, flat stacked rocks are as good as anything. Very motivated people. The ride out was easy going. The rain started moving in just as we got to the bottom. All in all a very nice trip. Charlieman is working on some video and stills. My not so smart smart phone decided not to save the pics i took with it. Anyone else have some, post 'em up!

We had a fine time today! It's always good to hook up with old friends (Greg and Will) and meet new ones (Charlie, Paul, Travis, Sabrina and Will's kids)! We almost got home before the thunderstorm got here, but not quite. The only carnage to report was the aforementioned broken frame on the buggy and a few "Nevada Pinstripes". Michelle is working on the photos, so I'll post them tomorrow.

Good times! Thanks to everyone who came out today!

Good times today. That road is definitely beat down from the rains last winter. Basically a riverbed from the water towers up to the top of the hill.

Thanks for leading the way and being patient with the kid wrangling. They had a good time, even if they did complain half the time. They especially liked it when the rains started coming in and it cooled off.

Sweet run! We had a blast running the buggy and hanging out. The vid should be live by 12a here.

Unfortunately I messed up the color a bit trying to improve the battery life. After our tree trimming the last remaining shot was the run back down the bumpy road into town.

    Cant wait till next time

We paused at the radio towers then back down and left to the stone cabins. Not sure where bull creek is but from the cabins to the trailer it was approx 14 miles.

Here are a few of the shots that Michelle got yesterday.

The climb up from the trail head was uneventful. It was certainly different following a buggy!

Size: 67.0 KB

At the top of the climb, in what used to be a dry lake, we saw a herd of feral horses in what is now a lush meadow.

Size: 81.0 KB

On to the mill site where we spent a while crawling around/over the ruins.

Will, doing what he calls "kid wrangling".

    Name: IMG_9805.jpg

From there, it was on to the top. Here's Travis (chepjeepcj7) grinding up the last steep part before his jeep got too hot.

    Name: IMG_9813.jpg
Views: 101
Size: 91.9 KB

It was on top of the mountain where he had to assume the "Jeep Pose" while surrounded by 2 Land Cruisers and a Ford.

All kidding aside, Travis has done a helluva job building his rig from scratch. A few minor issues to work out and he'll have a very capable ride! I hope to see him on future runs.

The view from the top didn't suck. I can even see my house from here!

After lunch on the top of the peak, we headed out to the Stone Cabin Mine. There's nothing left of the pre WWII mining operation, but there are 3 crumbling stone cabins left from the original workings from the 1800's.

By then, the skies were looking a bit imposing, so we beat feet back to the trail head. Most of us got back just before this hit.

Paul mentioned that he'd been watching the front suspension on the buggy "flexing" on the way back to the truck. Upon arrival he noticed this.

Looks like he'll be spending some quality time with the welder before the next run!

That's all I've got. No serious rock crawling or high speed sandwash runs, just a mellow day out in the hills with good people. As far as I know, a good time was had by all and I hope we can do it again soon.

    Cheers!
