    DOH! Petroglyphs

    So,,,,,
Based on reports that the road to the petroglyphs at Lagomarsino was easy, I decided to take a neighbor and see if I could make it.
    Well.....
    I did not.
Got to the road at Lockwood and headed out. I had a GPS with topo maps and a printout of Google Earth maps with the roads highlighted and high hopes of an easy adventure.
After heading up Canyon Road, I could not find the correct route. I got to the quarry entrance and was greeted with NO TRESPASSING signs. I turned around and found what I thought was the correct road. 100 yards up, I met a locked gate with more NO TRESPASSING signs.
    Say what????
So I turned around again and found another dirt road that proceeded south, just before the quarry entrance. I THINK THIS IS WHERE I WENT WRONG. DOH!
Took the road and basically drove around in a southbound direction for about two hours. Map checking and GPS stupidity ruled the day.
Met another off-roader in a really nice Suzuki who was also "directionally challenged". We discussed opinions and continued south. I though that I was one mountain range West of the petroglyphs. Never found them.
After I got home, I was able to look closely at GPS info and Google Earth and I realized that I was TWO mountain ranges West of the petroglyphs.
As the crow flies, I was only about a mile from the petroglyphs when I turned around, but it was getting late and it was time to head home.
Followed the GPS track and returned with no issues.
I now realize that there was a "left turn" outside of Lockwood that I missed.
Hope I can find it next time!

    Happy trails

Ummm, no left. The road that goes south right before the quarry is the right one follow it up past a ruined building right side and right by the road, another set of ruins about 1/4 mile up on the left. Follow the main branch up to the top. Come to a slight left and follow it about 1 to 1.5 mile or so down to a dry stream crossing (usually dry) turn left follow main track up over a bit of a ridge and down across another flat down a single switchback and across another flat towards the power lines vearing left down hill to the stream (alwasy at least a bit of flow. Look for a right and a small crossing up a bank and follow the south side to the parking area...

As close as I can get from memory...

Hey man, at least you tried. That's part of the fun, exploring new places. Locked gates suck but now you know. I'm pretty sure I've never gone the same way up Jumbo Grade every time I've driven it.
I only drink a little, but when I do, I turn into another person, and that person drinks a lot.

My brother and I drove around up there 3 times before we actually found them. Lots of trails to explore.

I agree with Mc Nasty, some of the most memorable trips We've had was getting lost ! The first time we went to Gold Lake we discovered the off road camp ground . From there we followed some trail and got lost and 14 hours later we made it home.
